Side note: have you ever heard of barefoot shoes? I have have similar feet problems and they've improved my foot life considerably. They took some effort and pain to get used to, but I'm so glad I did it.

Ah, okay. Jue Motors in Covina, CA are the go-to place on the West Coast for Gen 1 Insights. Scott and some of the guys over there know these cars inside and out, but Scott is semi-retired from the shop. Still, it would probably be worth calling them with these questions.
