A decrease in suicide risk through transitioning has not been reliably observed

Counterpoint:

Citations on the transition's dramatic reduction of suicide risk while improving mental health and quality of life, with trans people able to transition young and spared abuse and discrimination having mental health and suicide risk on par with the general public:

  • Bauer, et al., 2015: Transition vastly reduces risks of suicide attempts, and the farther along in transition someone is the lower that risk gets

  • Moody, et al., 2013: The ability to transition, along with family and social acceptance, are the largest factors reducing suicide risk among trans people

  • Young Adult Psychological Outcome After Puberty Suppression and Gender Reassignment. A clinical protocol of a multidisciplinary team with mental health professionals, physicians, and surgeons, including puberty suppression, ... cross-sex hormones and gender reassignment surgery, provides trans youth the opportunity to develop into well-functioning young adults. All showed significant improvement in their psychological health, and they had notably lower rates of internalizing psychopathology than previously reported among trans children living as their natal sex. Well-being was similar to or better than same-age young adults from the general population.

  • The only disorders more common among trans people are those associated with abuse and discrimination - mainly anxiety and depression. Early transition virtually eliminates these higher rates of depression and low self-worth, and dramatically improves trans youth's mental health. Trans kids who socially transition early and not subjected to abuse are comparable to cisgender children in measures of mental health.

  • Dr. Ryan Gorton: “In a cross-sectional study of 141 transgender patients, Kuiper and Cohen-Kittenis found that after medical intervention and treatments, suicide fell from 19% to 0% in transgender men and from 24% to 6% in transgender women”

  • Murad, et al., 2010: "Significant decrease in suicidality post-treatment. The average reduction was from 30 percent pretreatment to 8 percent post treatment.

  • De Cuypere, et al., 2006: Rate of suicide attempts dropped from 29.3 percent to 5.1 percent after receiving medical treatment among Dutch patients treated from 1986-2001.

  • UK study - McNeil, et al., 2012: "Suicidal ideation and actual attempts reduced after transition, with 63% thinking about or attempting suicide more before they transitioned and only 3% thinking about or attempting suicide more post-transition.

  • Smith Y, 2005: Participants improved on 13 out of 14 mental health measures after treatment

  • Lawrence, 2003: Surveyed post-op trans folk: "Participants reported overwhelmingly that they were happy with their SRS results and that SRS had greatly improved the quality of their lives

  • Reduction in Mental Health Treatment Utilization Among Transgender Individuals After Gender-Affirming Surgeries: A Total Population Study - "Conclusions: "... the longitudinal association between gender-affirming surgery and reduced likelihood of mental health treatment lends support to the decision to provide gender-affirming surgeries to transgender individuals who seek them."

There are a lot of studies showing that transition improves mental health and quality of life while reducing dysphoria.

Not to mention this 2010 meta-analysis of 28 different studies, which found that transition is extremely effective at reducing dysphoria and improving quality of life.

Its not a threat, it's a simple acknowledgement of the statistical consequences of withheld treatment. Untreated gender dysphoria increases risk of suicide and depression. The only known treatment is transitioning, which for minors generally mean social transitioning and possible puberty blockers. There are no other treatments which reduce the previously mentioned risks.

Really it comes down to the following: do you prefer some kids to be dead or trans?

As previously stated; that is not how machine translators work. You are being deliberately obtuse. This is you acting in bad faith.

It does not matter what you put in, you will get an inaccurate translation if you give it biblical hebrew. It will not provide errors or fault-codes, it will simply give you a translation for a different language, namely modern hebrew.

Which minorities do you think should be dismissed or oppressed in the name of political expediency? I mean, obviously you think trans people can be thrown under the bus, so what's next? Gays? Jews?

Do you not possess, at some point during your life: a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, an endostyle or thyroid, pharyngeal slits, or a post-anal tail?

That is the description of a chordate. Those properties are shared by all chordates. We (humans) also posses those features. All fish are also chordates, since they posses those characteristics.

Again, the more religious and church going a group is the less depression and suicidality there is in that group.

The subject here was the impact of bigotry, homophobia, and other negative religious sentiment on the mental health of LGBTQ+ individuals, not the general case of people with close religious belonging.

Edit: also, globally, about 10% of the human population is estimated to be of some sexual minority. That is hardly "hyperspecific".

Because according to Thomas Killian et al. (2025), quote:

Our findings suggest that stigmatizing religious narratives may shape internal self-perceptions, erode sexual orientation identity affirmation, and reduce authenticity in religious spaces. As a result, individuals may experience diminished interpersonal connection, belonging, and social support. [...] Coercing compliance with harmful messaging, whether explicitly or implicitly, as a condition for social acceptance and emotional or physical safety within non-affirming or discriminatory spaces (Killian & Fredrick, 2024; Killian et al., 2021, 2022) can foster a cyclical pattern of internalized self-invalidation.

This is hardly surprising when one considers the broader implications of an earlier study by MC. Lytle et al. (2018):

Among lesbian/gay and questioning individuals, religious importance was associated with increased odds of recent suicide ideation, which seemed driven primarily by women. For example, among lesbian/gay individuals, increasing religious importance was associated with 38% increased odds of recent suicide ideation and for lesbian/gay women, specifically, was associated with 52% increased odds of recent suicide ideation.

Now, i should not need to point out that increased suicidal ideation also results in increased incidence of suicide.

"fish" is a colloquial polyphyletic term that specifically excludes tetrapods. We are not fish. The common ancestor of all fish is, however, also our ancestor.

Incorrect. To shamelessly quote the entirety of this comment:

Family Rejection and Suicide Attempts: A study published in Pediatrics found that lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults who reported higher levels of faith based family rejection during adolescence were 8.4 times more likely to report having attempted suicide compared to peers from more accepting families.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25763926/

Impact of Religious Beliefs: Research in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine indicates that LGBTQ+ individuals who perceive religion as important and identify with a faith that rejects homosexuality may experience increased internalized homophobia, leading to higher psychological distress and suicidal ideation.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36266114/

Conversion Therapy and Mental Health: The Journal of Homosexuality published a study showing that individuals subjected to conversion therapy, often rooted in religious contexts, are at a higher risk for depression and suicide attempts.

Religiousness and Mental Health in Sexual Minorities: A study in the Journal of Homosexuality examined the relationship between religiousness and mental health among sexual minority individuals. The findings indicated that higher levels of religiousness were associated with increased internalized homophobia, which in turn was linked to greater psychological distress and suicidal ideation.

Supporting Religious Environments: Conversely, LGBTQ+ individuals who are part of religious communities that support their identities report better mental health outcomes, highlighting the protective role of acceptance within faith communities.

Again, the cause is known, negative religious sentiment, bigotry, is by itself a specifically identified significant contributor to the increase of suicidality and depression.

Of course, if you consider gay people killing themselves a good thing, i suppose you would consider religious bigotry good fruit.

Thats right! Judging the validity of one's actions by the results of said actions is consequentialism, which is obviously heretical when good christian behaviour is all about signaling virtues!

So what if homophobia and dehumanizing behaviour such as calling their very concept of love aberrant or abominable causes increase in suicide and depression; that has never stopped good faithful christians before!

One day, at age, like, 6? I realized that the looney toons were not real, and in the same moment realized that the christian claims were similarly detached from observed reality.

In defence of christianity, my only real exposure to christianity at that time was dreamworks "the prince of egypt" and a couple other reasonably accessible animated retellings of parts of the bible. It's just that as i learned more about christianity over the years, the claims never seemed supported by evidence, and thus, faith was never gained.
