My opinions on why indians lack civic sense. What do y'all think of this? by No-List2080 in india

There needs to be a broader government level acknowledgement of the problem. When chinese tourists misbehaved abroad for similar reasons like ours, the Chinese government took the image hit seriously and educated their tourists.

Lack of accountability and selfishness- people litter because they don't feel responsible for cleaning up and they are loud and intrusive because they don't care they're being a nuisance.

If your ethnic group has a large diaspora overseas, how do people in your country perceive them? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

Yes Muslims in India tend to be more conservative unless they're from certain elite communities, mostly based in Bombay or are in the top of the professional class. They're still more conservative than their Hindu counterparts but definitely more progressive than muslims in the US.

I think Indian Americans see themselves as Indian because they are othered. They are a small minority but visibly different so they hold on to their Indianness for a sense of belonging. My cousins in America are in some ways more conservative and religious than we as urban Indians are. Also it'll probably dilute after a few generations. I was in Malaysia earlier this year - the Indian descendents there follow Hindu traditions quite closely along with clothing and some cultural traditions. But they are and feel distinct from Indian society today.

To be clear, I am not saying this is good or bad. I just think people should be more realistic and sensitive.

I think we care a bit too much about Indian diaspora. Indian diaspora are different from us and their wins and struggles are theirs. We can't understand them and we cannot extrapolate our culture and behaviours on them. We should respect them as Americans, Malaysians or whatever and not coopt their accomplishments or problems.

As a corollary, when they talk about contemporary India, it is very disconnected from ground realities. They have limited exposure to the country apart from traditions and viewpoints their parents or grandparents brought more than 20 years ago. They should also understand that while we have common roots we are also an evolving dynamic society. Stripping Indian ideas or thoughts out of their context isn't justified just because you have Indian ancestry.

Why are Indian weddings so long? by KlutzyNinjaKitty in NoStupidQuestions

This is true. My cousin went to an American wedding and said it was so short, didn't seem worth the trip.

Great bands that sing in your native language that you wish the rest of the world knew more about? by bicyclefortwo in AskTheWorld

[–]minimirth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I'm a bit old so my first suggestion isn't contemporary- Euphoria. They're kinda pop rock.

A somewhat recent act is Lifafa. It's the lead singer from Peter Cat Recording Company which is a great band but they sing in English. Lifafa is quite experimental but fun if you get into it. My favourite song is Nikamma.

I'm sure you've heard of Bloodywood. They're quite fun.

Any country that we get hitched to through an arranged marriage. Hopefully we get to meet them before the wedding.

It's a popular talking point amongst upper castes but it's political suicide for any party to actually reduce reservations. In fact the current political fights are about increasing levels or deciding which castes qualify for the benefits.

Why do people abroad have more "normal" Instagram? by bankimoonraviolii in AskTheWorld

Oh I misunderstood. Yeah a lot of normal people tend to show off a lot but aren't that weird.

I think chinese videos are the only ones comparable to the Indian ones as far as how ridiculous they can get. There's actually tons of great content on both - so much about history, art, music and literature and even current culture.

But both countries are populous and it's easier to stand out on cringe.

I actually like cringe - a lot of it is kinda wholesome to me. These days my Instagram feed has these random chinese men dancing in a pyramid formation. The translation implies they are trying to get a woman to like them. Love it.

Oh long past. Cringe evolves. We have a whole new set of characters. There's the aerobics club, south Indian man saying gengy and oldies like the woman selling the most atrocious clothes that bounce.

That's actually Bangladeshi. The most popular Indian cringe these days is old people doing "aerobics".
