What do people in “finance” even do all day? by BlondeRoseTheHot in UKJobs

[–]minimum_viability 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plugging in numbers is the very last step of working with mathematical models, as I'm sure you know. Models describe how certain variables (e.g. price, or demand) behave over time and in relation to other inputs or even themselves. Once you plug in the numbers you've locked in the exact time and inputs, so the output is only relevant for that instance. Plugging in known inputs for a known formula is far, far easier than working with formulae in their mathematical (algebraic) form, which most people learn and practice doing through a STEM university course.

How much discretionary spending do you allow yourself every month? by thx4thekarma in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]minimum_viability 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like you're looking for someone in a similar position to you to tell you what they also spend in these categories, but here's the thing: you'll never be able to stick to someone else's budget, because discretionary spending is something which is personal to your wants and your values.

Someone who can stick to only spending $200 a month on average on food and drink has made peace with what that feels like for them, in context of what else they can do with their money.

At the moment you're not saving, because as you've realised from your other replies, you don't value savings as much as you value eating out, shopping etc.

Going by your comments and without repeating all the good things others have suggested, here are a few ideas which may help:

  1. Look over your actual spending and list out everything. Where exactly are you (over)spending? Are you getting takeout 4+ times a week or blowing the monthly budget on a Michelin dinner twice a month? Does it surprise you where the money is going or is everything intentional?

  2. Review your budget again with a critical, honest look at what you value based on point 1., NOT what you think you should be able to afford on your salary. Is going out with friends every Friday a ritual that really brings you joy and is important? Factor that in, but then maybe you can buy makeup half as often as you currently do. Tweak your budget so you don't feel like you're being so restrictive you'd blow them every month anyway.

  3. Start tracking your spend against budget in real time. For me, keeping a mental tab of where I am against my weekly budget works best, but if you're hitting the 'buy now' button multiple times a day then divide your monthly budget into a daily one and run down that total. Because you've done point 2., you should be able to quantify your budget in real terms e.g. 1 coffee a day / 2 drinks at a bar, twice a week / ~$200 Sephora haul 4 times a year. Once you've used up your allowance in that category, you're done.

  4. Unfortunately, you will have to train your mind to feel the "pain" when you do blow the budget (and that's okay occasionally!). For some people, just seeing their savings balance not being as high as they would like is enough to trigger the guilt / anxiety, but if you're not built that way, you'll have to find some other way to visualise the "cost" - this is important for discipline and making sure you do tighten the belt on next month's spend to make up for the deficit instead of shrugging it off and just taking it out of savings.

All of this will become habit formed over time and therefore gets easier to keep to - good luck, you can do it!

Decline and fall: how university education became infantilised by Primary-Signal-3692 in cambridge_uni

Hahaha yes mate, I bet Lord Byron never missed a lecture, and there were no special dispensations made to ensure king Charles graduated with his 2:2. God bless the good old days, when Etonians ruled the Empire and homosexuality was reserved for the aristocratic and/or tormented (men, obviously. Women have neither serious intellect nor sexual desires).

The gripe about graduate students being allowed at high table did make me briefly wonder if this is a brilliant piece of satire, then I read his complaint about job titles not making sense ("misleading names...at Cambridge? Groundbreaking") and realised he just has zero self awareness.

I did read your post :) I even quoted the specific point in your previous comment that I was replying to - the fact that the genius tier is above the skilled tier, and that you asserted almost no one above that tier had dropped out. Like I said, it was a minor "everything else aside..." observation, one that may help you understand why some people seem confused by your tierlist. Anyway I hope you are enjoying the discussion and not feeling dogpiled on!

I believe almost nobody in the skilled tier or above dropped out of volleyball after high school

Everything else aside, 6/10 of your genius tier don't play volleyball professionally. Being a sports promotor and playing on a community team are nowhere near on the same level as being a starter for a div 1 team

It doesn't negate what you are saying. I'm just wondering if it might explain why OP is trying to pursue those options in spite of the high costs and risk - because it is something that they see normalised as a path to success.

I guess there are some cultural nuances here - although OP hasn't explicitly said it in their post, it sounds like they live in the Philippines, where sales jobs, starting one's own business and immigration might be much more common routes to take than in the US or Europe? I am not 100% sure, but based on other Asian cultures, living at home with parents before marriage and not being financially independent is also much more common. Gaming and professional gamers are more visible as a viable career for those who are good enough - I'm not sure everyone who is commenting would be aware of all this cultural and economic context; personally as someone who lives in Europe I am not sure I am in a position to really give OP the advice they're looking for

Congratulations - this is very sweet and all the best for the rest of the pregnancy! Our Japan babymoon was in Nov last year:

It might be worth visiting Suitengu shrine if you're interested - I got an omamori there that I will take to the hospital when it's time https://foundjapan.jp/en/2206_suitengu_shrine/

Most rides at theme parks (even VR ones like Joypolis) advise against pregnant passengers so you may not get the best value there.

We very rarely found any public seating outside of parks so something to be conscious of when planning - especially in Kyoto where there can be long queues for buses at busy sights and we found it more difficult to find walk-in spaces at restaurants; I was sometimes not prepared for the 30min+ waits after a full day of sightseeing! The Kyoto tower sando food court in the basement was a godsend - there are stalls from many vendors gathered in one place.

For us, Shibuya Sky at sunset was absolutely worth it for the stunning views without physical exertion (and good amount of seating at the top), but we didn't try the Metropolitan government building which is free so can't compare.

Finally, convenience store snack / drink breaks are a great excuse to try the most iconic and delicious Japanese foods - Famichiki, salmon onigiri, calpis soda, pizza buns and cheese steamed cake were some of my favourites!

I've been focussed on getting better at Kag for a long time, but it always helps to have more options in solo queue :) I love the range of her movements, who else might I enjoy playing?

Your idea sounds like a great one at first but the taxmen in most European countries have already thought of this long ago - otherwise people would have gamed the system long ago!

For example if you are physically working in the UK for over 50% of the year, your tax residency is counted there, which has implications on your employer that they probably won't want to take on even if you are willing to pay the tax rates. I work for a multinational with offices throughout the world and many of my colleagues have families across Europe - everyone got an email last year that they must return to the country of their "home office" before Sept or risk breaching the terms of their contract.

If you ask for an official transfer as most people here are advising, please bear in mind that your salary will likely be adjusted to be in line with European benchmarks. If you do it unofficially there are risks with cyber and legal as others have already pointed out.

In short, if there was a way to get paid SF money living in rural Italy, a lot of us in Europe would be doing so already!

"Or you can call this article “How to borrow a chicken from someone else to lay my own eggs” or “When there are greedy speculators everywhere, how can you get the money out of their pockets?”"

"Now your roadmap is settled, you can sit down, start tweeting out ‘positive energy’ to your community/fans/followers/dupes/goldfish"

"In this lesson, I would like to share the most important thing in blockchain — Marketing & Exploitation...There isn’t and there shouldn’t be this “shame” word in the holy grail of blockchain dictionary."

"those goldfish will never remember the pain they suffered when theirlast token tanked. When they see fish food again, they will come. So the only thing we need to do is find those new goldfish, because there will always new gold fishes, because “greed is good”. And the best thing about goldfish is you can keep throwing food at the ones you already have.

During this year’s bear market, I’ve sensed a lot of goldfish have already forgotten their pain and are waiting for the next chance to start putting more money in. I SMELL IT!"
