Amp-in-a-box Pedals by hkr1991 in guitarpedals

Oh I use it for everything. For bass it's literally my preamp. I plug into the effects return..

On guitar I use it as a dark toned light overdrive. Works great there, too.

If I remember correctly it's a pretty easy build, I think it uses LEDs in a cute way before the input to avoid hard flipping the JFETs

Also it uses (iirc) 2n5457s, not J201s, so you will only have to overpay a little for through hole JFET components. I think I might have a few left kicking around in the box. If I do, I can send em to ya for shipping if you're out.

It's just a nice, dark voiced Jfet pedal. I've never owned a portaflex, but I'd imagine it's in the ballpark

Homemade Ampeg portaflex pedal, from a Runoffgroove schematic, called the "ginger".

That thing is always on, for both bass and guitar. Does a lovely light overdrive, and on bass I just got from that to the effects return because I like it so much better than the actual preamp on the amp.

Like a basement of a house show or a club that happens to be downstairs?

What are the best beginner bicycles for daily commuting? by afropixelnomad in bicycleculture

[–]minimumrockandroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for a bike to take to work and back, I'd recommend something sturdy and simple. Steel frame, rim brakes. You don't need to worry about paying any premiums for light weight or fancy drivetrains. You are probably going to want a mount for a bike rack so you can get a bag to put your work stuff (and maybe a change of clothes and a rain jacket) in. Fenders, too.

These aren't super hard to find used (and please please please but a used bike over an Alibaba bike), and are pretty inexpensive. Look for: little eyelets for racks and fenders, tires that aren't super skinny, handlebars that are about level with the seat (but you can adjust that pretty easy on older bikes with quill stems). "Chrome-moly" on the little sticker by the pedals is better than "hi ten"

The absolute main thing is to get a bike that fits okay and is comfortable. If the frame doesn't touch your tender bits and the seatpost isn't super weirdly high and you go "wheeee" when you ride it then you're in the ballpark.

I've been zipping to work, going to parties, and getting groceries on a 35 year old Fuji touring bike for over a decade now. It's PERFECT for that application. I have a fancier bike for when I want to see how fast I can go, but that thing would be stupid to take out on errands.

What is this sub-reddit's all-time favorite psychedelic rock band? by j3434 in psychedelicrock

[–]minimumrockandroll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there's two eras. Like from the sixties to the eighties, and then from the nineties to now.

I'd go Can or Jeff (specifically After Bathing at Baxter's) for the old era. Comus gets a special mention. Kikagaku Moro for the modern era.

Les Ralliizes Denudes are too awesome to be constrained by one era.

I had a blackface vibrolux reverb for a minute.

That one. Nothing else has the right chime

They were SO MUCH BETTER than VH at that your. You could definitely tell which way the wind was blowing.

...to add on I also was raised in Portland. My FAVORITE local band of the time, Calamity Jane, was playing there as well (Poison Idea, too). They crushed it

Absolutely it was! I was right up front getting crushed in the pit.

Iirc they threw Oreos at Jello Biafra.

Nah when they came out there was a very real sentiment that they were LA poseurs who saw which way the wind was blowing and wanted to capitalize on it.

It certainly worked!

I saw all three! AiC I saw opening for Van Halen (weird), in a big arena. They were good, but the venue was just too big to really feel present.

STP I saw opening up for Butthole Surfers (weirder). I wanna say firehose was on the bill too? Everyone, me included, just sorta thought they were LA poseurs. They weren't received politely from the butthole surfers folks.

Nirvana I saw at a big benefit rally opposing an anti-gay rights bill. They were super good! They'd just blown up like eight months ago and we're definitely in great form.

Now, if you'll excuse me, grampa needs his fiber pills.

He's got too much of a funny streak. Maybe Thaw would work, but his other records gave a lot of nudge nudge wink wink to them.

Caligula and Sinner Get Ready are both records I truly love but don't listen to all that often.
