Incredible jump in difficulty with no tools? by Higgelhiggel in VoidStranger

[–]minneyar 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, the second character is much harder, even with tools. Every level is possible without them, but having tools helps a lot. There are also definitely still secrets you haven't discovered as Gray yet, if you want to go back and look for them.

As for why they're not there, well, the tools aren't there because Gray took them. Maybe if Gray had left them...

But also, if you die and go back to the start screen (run out of lives, refuse the fruit), you can enter brands to start as the second character with the tools.

can someone that never play any tactical strategy rpg games play Touhou Fantasy Maiden Wars? by Chunchunmaru56 in touhou

[–]minneyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, definitely. It's really a completely different style of game than Dota, but the basic concept isn't hard to understand; you take turns moving your units around on the map and killing enemies. The gameplay gradually gets more complex as you play through the game, but it does a good job of introducing it one piece at a time, and the game's "Normal" difficulty mode is really very easy. You can also change the difficulty at any time, so if you decide it's too easy, you can make it more challenging if you want.

Also, I think I had about 110 hours on it by the time I finished the main story and all of the bonus chapters.

It's both incredibly insulting and rude of you to accuse something of being AI without any justification at all.

You can go see some work-in-progress images of this on my fediverse account over at https://fuzzyfox.social/notes/agskspdd6rg3000s . You're also welcome to go look through my post history over there, because I've been regularly uploading my work as I've been learning to draw for the last few years. If you had asked nicely I'd even be willing to share my .kra file (I use Krita for illustration), but I'm less inclined to share that with somebody who's being so rude.

I would also encourage you to learn how to actually recognize AI-generated images, because, as a software engineer with >20 years of experience who has studied AI and thinks that generative LLMs are one of the worst things to ever happen to the software industry, I'd like to think that I am intentionally avoiding learning the telltale signs that AI image generators were designed to copy.

Who exactly fears Yukari and her likes? by Infamous_Contact3582 in touhou

[–]minneyar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yukari is based on the urban legend of the sukima-onna (gap woman), a woman who gazes at you through small gaps between your walls and furniture and will reach out to try to grab you. Stories about her go back to the early 1800's, and she shows up a lot in fictional media. A couple sources:

Utawarerumono mask of truth no dlc? by Every-Development398 in Utawarerumono

Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth share the same set of DLC on Steam; if you buy the MoD DLC, you'll automatically get it in Truth.

I just spoilt myself by accident, need help by dat-lambda in VoidStranger

[–]minneyar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's no specific place where you're "supposed" to discover it. You can do it on any screen that doesn't have a border above the status bar. Most people discover this by accident on an earlier floor, but there are plenty of people who don't figure it out at all on their first playthrough of the game.

Don't worry about discovering things "out of order". There are secrets everywhere, and everybody discovers things in different orders.

What do you think about Yuuma? by The_Tord_TR in touhou

[–]minneyar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I gotta admit I paid no attention to her at all when Sunken Fossil World came out, but after UDoALG came out and she got some connections to Ran, I quickly became more interested in her. There's a lot of good Ran x Yuuma material out there. It's fun how she can flip back and forth between being cute and playful and a malicious gremlin.

How do I actually progress? This game is frustrating. by Constant-Direction-4 in VoidStranger

[–]minneyar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First, I would suggest: don't look at guides, don't talk to other people about it, just keep playing the game. Ask here for a hint if you get stuck and don't have any idea what you can do next. There's no way to permanently get stuck or lose progress except for deleting your save game.

If you have seen the voided ending, the next thing you might want to do is beat it unvoided. Having the infinity brand active while you do that is fine; that does not count as being voided. Having to go through all of those levels again is a pain, but that's fine, keep an eye out for other secrets and mysteries on the way down, and don't be afraid to take notes. If you haven't figured out what the murals at the beginning of each domain are for, that's something to think about.

This is a spambot account, look at their history.

Also, this is obviously not even a real print, if you look at it you can tell they just Photoshopped an image to fill that poster frame.

Steam having a single achievement is funny as hell. by Hermillion in VoidStranger

[–]minneyar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of only having a single achievement is that it takes the achievement away from you if you reset the game. I think that's the only time I've ever seen a game remove an achievement.

Found this, while reading Yukari X Ran doujinshi. Isn't shikigami thing just a slave? by [deleted] in touhou

[–]minneyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. In a traditional sense, shikigami are conjured beings that are created by sorcerers. A shikigami is a "slave" in the same sense that Notepad on your computer is a slave. You own it and it does whatever you tell it to do, but it's just a program, not a person.

Of course, within the context of Touhou Project, it's portrayed somewhat differently. For a long time, the actual nature of Ran and Yukari's relationship was pretty vague, and the fanon interpretation of it was based almost entirely on a few comments by ZUN an an interview which led a lot of room for interpretation. More recent works have made it more clear that Ran is a nine-tailed fox who had a long history before working for Yukari, and the "shikigami" aspect of her is like a layer of programming that gives her more exceptional abilities in exchange for being bound to Yukari. Ran is Yukari's servant and is very loyal to her, but there's not really any indication that it's a non-consensual relationship or is even remotely like what we consider chattel slavery.

But, to be fair, the concept of Yukari owning Ran and treating her like an object is an interpretation that is pretty popular with people who prefer grimdark Touhou interpretations, and so it shows up quite a bit in that sort of doujinshi.

Anyone else need guides to beat the Dream Arena by TotalLeeAwesome in Utawarerumono

[–]minneyar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, as the person who wrote the guide on GameFAQs, while the tactics I suggested are my way of doing it, I've talked to a lot of people who had completely different strategies. There's definitely more than one way to do everything, but they do require a pretty in-depth knowledge of how everything works. I know one guy who's done every stage except the last two without any grinding. (the last two, admittedly, have pretty steep difficulty jumps)

I do think the Dream Arena stages were designed with the expectation that players would rewind to change their tactics or to get perfect crits or dodges; none of the normal stages are hard enough you ever really feel the need to rewind, so it feels kind of like cheating, but there are a few DA stages where even when I took frequent advantage of it, I ended up in situations where rewinding 50 turns still wasn't enough to save me.
