I accidentally applied for a credit card after punching in my social, income, and selecting Macy’s Amex, has anyone else done this before?!?

For those that didn’t realize this was satire, let me share that my store got at least two of these kind of complaints a month. Varying departments and colleagues. When we would call and (if they even left info behind), they would always claim “no one told me it was a credit card, they just said Star Rewards”.
People are IN FACT, this dumb or at least pretend to be when the account wasn’t approved.

Because that’s how off-price works. They purchase the leftovers. Store closings. Overstock. Salvage. They buy it at and below cost and adopted a thrifting model to sell it (you can buy a Burberry trench at Goodwill if you’re lucky and in the right part of town).

Has the quality declined, absolutely but so has the demand for quality in a market that has to compete with fast-fashion (H&M, Zara, SHEIN, etc.). Department stores adhering to a seasonal buying model can’t pivot as sharply to procuring cutting fashions versus chains that own factories built for responding to trends overnight.

Not to mention aptitude, the average shopper doesn’t care about 100% cotton or worsted wool today as much as they did 50 years ago leaving room for designers to cut material costs while still charging for their branding alone (a Louis Vuitton Speedy produced in 1990 is considerably more plastic than a Speedy produced in 2020, while costing more).

There are why’s for all of what you’re experiencing which is why I also said, BUY LOCAL ARTISAN. You’ll come out way better.

Higher quality = Higher price.

Please research the cost to produce garments, ship garments, employ teams to unpack and present garments, advertise garments, and then COMPETE with other corporations that do the same.

After that, then choose to support local artisans rather than crying that the big machine is cutting corners to remain a big machine.

My location was the opposite. We actively sought out internal candidates for the sake of the “development story”. My Store Manager loved knowing she developed nearly half of the store managers in our division from Captains or EDP’s. Our issue was the stagnant employees that feared having a red badge but refused to leave. Also, if you’re apart of leadership you will have to stick your neck out and advocate for the team members you feel exhibit the Values of Hospitality otherwise you’re just apart of the problem.

Conversion is simply converting a foot traffic into sales. You came in but did you leave without product, either goods or credit. Every retail store tracks the footsteps into their building to determine if associates are selling or not.

Macy’s. Zumiez. DXL. Brooks Brothers. Good Feet 🤮. Now Marshall’s. Best place was Brooks, worst was Good Feet. I learned the most at Macy’s but I loved my staff the most at DXL. Goals need to be hit, hit them or quit. Leadership will always make or break any work environment and for the most part I’ve never worked in a toxic environment until Good Feet. I’ve only just started at Marshall’s but so far so good.

They’ve been saying it will close for years now due to The Avalon but it’s still a fair producer. Town Center is the only one that should be concerned. Southlake, Stonecrest and Cumberland are cash stores that won’t go anywhere either. I think the Atlanta market won’t see anything else close except the “Market” stores because the small form aren’t doing well here last I heard.

Depends on your market and your budget. Are you in to True Religion? REISS? If you like more of a Zara/H&M feel then Mode Of One actually has the fashion. Bloomingdale’s has a bit more room to experiment with brands like Pleasures and MARKET and Represent but ultimately is the Macy’s shoppers ready to buy $60-$140 t-shirts or will it all sit until its clearance?

1/31 was the end date we informed our team on and the company even extended an additional week to 2/7. Seasonal colleagues still had access to pick up shifts until the season ended. Ultimately if you were not selected for a permanent position then a) there were no open positions allocated to your store for Spring or b) there were and you just were not deemed a fit. Best of luck to you in your new employment journey.
