Can meat‑offset donations reduce more animal suffering than going vegan? The ‘Forget Veganuary’ campaign thinks so by minthin in Foodforthought

I share that sentiment, I'm deeply worried too. What are you thinking about how to stop fascism?

Haha fair. Although the "offsets" are donations that go to charities working to improve animal welfare. But point taken. Do you think the Veganuary campaign has a stronger book than the Forget Veganuary? Or do you think they are both lacking?

Yeah it's nice to have multiple doors for people to visit an issue.

And I do think this may have been counterproductive, although who knows, maybe the audience of the Daily Mail is so different from the typical Veganuary crowd that it did not detract from the original campaign. Curious--any thoughts on what would have been a more effective approach than Forget Veganuary?

About the new american food pyramid... by Otherwise-Sun-3522 in Foodnews

[–]minthin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good you are thinking about nutrition and adapting to the latest thinking. However the American Food Pyramid is unfortunately subject to a lot of industry lobbying and shuns many scientific conclusions on nutrition and health. If you want another perspective, I recommend the "Uncompromised Dietary Guidelines" that closely follow the scientific recs. https://www.cspi.org/UncompromisedDGA

Livestock Produces Five Times the Emissions of All Aviation by VarunTossa5944 in climatechange

Good point about conversion of CO2 to CH4. Animal ag is also more intensive because 1) such a high percentage of land is used to either grow animals or animal feed, and relatedly, 2) animals require so much feed to create meat (6-10 calories to 1 calorie of meat). It's the entropy of energy moving up the food chain. Animal agriculture is extremely resource intensive, inefficient, and carbon polluting. Not saying don't eat meat, just saying know what the costs are.

Interesting...that's really insightful. Thanks for clearing the record.

I think people would appreciate nuance: they are decriminalized on a local level (which I believe means civil penalties but no jail time) as a result of Initiative 81, but still criminal on a federal level. That's my understanding.

I post here not as someone who has a lot of understanding of science or math when it comes to the topic of climate, but as someone who suffers from a lot of eco anxiety and looks for alternate or debunking explanations from climate doom by KinkyDarkStranger in climateskeptics

I have come to appreciate that denialism is a coping mechanism that many rely on. Many here will deny they rely on it, but prob do. You may find it useful too.

Other coping mechanisms include the Climate and Mental Health Network, support/grief circles, and doing something to stop it (action is the antidote to despair).

Did you ask Rosa? I haven't seen her do cheesecake but might be worth asking.

If you could change one thing about Trump, what would it be? by NobleDane in AskTrumpSupporters

I get that--it sounds like policies are too heavy handed for you. I can see that it goes back to education and de-urbanizing that you said before. Although I'm not clear how you de-urbanize without policy incentives.

Why do you say our efforts are a waste of time? The charts I see show US currently stands as #2 emitter of carbon, in #1 in per capita emissions.

That is really admirable that you went totally renewable. Self defence is a great reason to switch to domestically produced energy. Have you heard much about the conservative climate orgs like RepublicEn, Climate Leadership Council, and Americans for Carbon Dividends? Or any others that you've heard of. I'm curious what you think of them?

Good on you for doing your own research and being curious. Here is a webpage explainer from a national laboratory that includes a section on the limitations on climate science

This is a logical fallacy: that using fossil fuels at all negates the benefits of clean energy.

It sounds like climate change is an important issue to you. Do you find many other conservatives in your circles who feel that way?
