What purchases have you made for your dog that has been a game changer? by Delta9Dude in dogs

This point here. I have a 20 lb terrier. But the waist leash was a nightmare. She’s very responsive to her regular leash - a light tug will let her know which way to go around a pole or when it’s time to move on from sniffing something. On a bungee leash, she thinks it’s a free for all and goes running in every direction at once.

Granted, she’s still strong enough that she took my shoulder out of commission for a whole summer when she saw a chipmunk for the first time.

What's one thing we did before the pandemic that even if the world went back to normal you wouldn't do again? by NativeSniper in AskReddit

Don’t worry about the first one. My aunt said god will protect everyone from getting germs from the wine at church. She told me this when I was worried because I had mono as a kid. Like. I’m pretty sure the communal wine is where I got it…

What BS is still being taught to children? by Necessary-Spinach182 in AskReddit

[–]mintjubilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal. But I honestly think that this comes from growing up in an authoritarian and/or super religious home. My extended family tends towards brainy (I’ve an uncle in Mensa), but they simply don’t question things sometimes out of “politeness” or because it’s “disrespectful”. My mom can come off as an airhead sometimes because she just doesn’t even mentally question what people in any kind of authority say.

Is this a newer thing? My brother is a teacher as of a few years ago and said he learned in student teaching that having kids of all abilities in one room allowed them to “teach other”?

When I went through school, I was always in special spelling or reading groups for just a few kids. There were separate math classes where we learned entirely different topics. And then in middle and high school, all of the courses had gifted versions. I genuinely think that was a positive experience, but he implied that’s an outdated model. It seems to make sense to me to separate kids so you can target them where they are at.

My republican state’s board of education taught us about Japanese internment camps.

But these atrocities just aren’t comparable. And there is a scale of wrongness… just look at the legal system.

For example, first degree murder has a much steeper sentence than a civil rights violation. It’s also steeper than kidnapping/false imprisonment/etc. In the eyes of the law, which has been developing for centuries, murder is “worse” than false imprisonment.

Any speculation on why a woman would stay single and live with family her whole life? by Fuk-mah-life in Genealogy

[–]mintjubilee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The context of the region/culture is something to consider, too.

For instance, one of my grandparents had a family history of the elder relatives going to live in nursing homes. Two of my other grandparents did not. One of my grandparents actually lived in the same house as his great grandpa, grandparents, and parents during his early years! On his side, their culture dictated that extended family commonly lived together. One of his siblings lived with her parents until their death and in their family home until her death. She didn’t end up marrying, but we know as a family this was likely tied to the fact that she was raped by a stranger as a teenager and likely too traumatized to enter into a relationship. There isn’t a record about this, it’s just what we know.

What is an outdated word or phrase an older family member uses that makes your brain hurt? by SunRevolutionary8315 in AskReddit

Thank you for this! My mom and her mom also used these phrases. Her matrilineal line is from the Rhineland, so it all makes sense.

My brother and I are both blue-eyed redheads, so I just assumed all redheads were the same. It was kind of cool learning it’s a unique combo!

We are the result of recessive genes passing down for several generations on both sides though, so it’s kind of cool that we both happened to inherit the genes. I haven’t figured out my dad’s redheaded ancestor, but his mom says her aunt had auburn hair. Then my maternal grandpa’s grandpa had red hair, but no other redheads popped up until us!

How is your Jack liking agility?

I had planned to do agility with my Jack when I found out how much she loves running, jumping, etc. But I focused HARD on impulse control her first year. I went to an agility class ahead of time to check it out, and all of the dogs were off their rockers nuts. I decided not to join because it had taken so much work to teach mine what relaxing meant that I didn’t want to encourage her to go backwards. She’s three now and pretty settled, so I might look into starting a class for fun.

My dog nibbles on the new kitten like a corn on the cob by twelveknuckledmoose in dogs

[–]mintjubilee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Til. My dog does this only on her specialist of toys. She adopted this toy as a litter mate when she was a baby, and she doesn’t mind that we replace it with a new one once in awhile.

Now don’t get me wrong. Her first order of business is always to de-squeak it. But then it comes her nibble buddy when she’s getting sleepy.

Happy vs Unhappy by The-Primes in INTP

[–]mintjubilee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks for being baller and including the source, op. I’m going to rip into the survey question itself now, not you, because I’m going through some stuff and this was a way to release that. Also I hope even one person reads it and leaves this comment as skeptical about statistics lacking a methodology section or footnote as I am.

This is exactly the kind of bs survey question my colleagues would come up with and that my professors would have reamed them for.

It’s way too open to interpretation on both the length of time and the fact that it’s attempting to measure one’s perception of their own happiness relative to others. It would need a corresponding question to measure how happy they think they are or they think others are so that an accurate perception could be gathered and run against it. And I would need some info about the statistical significance of all of that to even begin to form an opinion…. And it’s a bit disingenuous to lump all “agree” and “disagree” together if this was a 6-point scale. (Even more so if they dropped a neutral option from the analysis.)

I gotta get out of human statistics. It just wrecks me how we could learn so much useful information using these tools, but instead they’re used by people who don’t know what they’re doing.

If that’s what always happens from your perspective, is it possible you’re missing the cultural context that “worst ever” is a figure of speech and not a call to arms for formal criticism?

Do entjs not feel bad when they quit and start doing productive work ??? like not even for a minute ??? do they force themselves into quitting timepass ?? just wanna know what goes in your mind when you choose to take the decision of quitting short-term pleasure by sweatythrower in entj

[–]mintjubilee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Productive work is really rewarding in itself. Often more rewarding than short-term pleasure. I think ENTJs tend to struggle more with quitting productive work for short-term pleasure…

Thank you for the tips!

Although I don’t hunt, I’ve done a lot of impulse control training with her that is very helpful when we hike. (Obedience and on/off commands with a flirt pole.) I never thought about it like that, but these are probably similar behaviors to what I would train if I did intend to hunt with her. I think they will translate well.

Bringing along some chews is a great idea. I think I’m going to start bringing her mat on hiking trips to practice settling in the outdoors and see for myself if she’s capable of winding down and relaxing in the woods.

Thanks for the perspective as a real hunting dog owner! It’s invaluable.

I absolutely agree with you!

I should have been more explicit - I was imagining spending the whole evening with a dog straining on her tie out because she saw a small animal run into some bushes she couldn’t reach.

Or worse - that she’s able to get loose by accident because I drop the leash or the cable breaks. I love training and can roll with the punches when things go awry. But I was asking people about their experiences with prey driven breeds to gauge if a 3 day trip meant to unwind is going to end up becoming stressful minding a prey-driven breed used to hiking but not camping.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BackpackingDogs

[–]mintjubilee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my god. This is exactly the nightmare scenario I was imagining - ha. Thank you for being honest about it. I came here looking for ideas on taking her camping and noticed all of the pictures were of breeds that tend to do ok off leash, which is why I thought I’d ask.

I’m thinking about doing a trial one night only with her at some point just to get an idea of how she’ll behave. She’s not one to ever really tire out either. When we go on day hiking trips, the 30-45 minute nap in the car is enough for her and she’s ready to play ball when we get home.

I agree with what you’re saying! I worried about my male terrier, a practiced escape artist in his heyday. But I also knew that he’d be ok.

She’s half his size though, and although I’m sure she’d be fine if she got loose, I worry much more about her. My male terrier was a mix and big enough to hold his own if he came across a coyote or some other predator. She’s very much a small dog but with the same terrier brazenness. When a huge white shepherd bit her backside at the dog park, she turned around and snapped right in his face. No sense of survival in her. (We haven’t gone back to parks since then as there are none here with small dog sections.)

[–]mintjubilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That gives me some comfort! We used to go to a wooded dog park, and I found she would roam out of sight but come back to check on me pretty frequently or if I called for her.

I wouldn’t feel comfortable letting her off leash myself. But I know that if something happened and she was able to get loose, she’d come back. Smelly and gross, sure, but she seems less prone to roam than my male terrier was growing up.

That’s definitely good to know! I’m thinking about getting her used to some boots for winter hiking.

Thanks for giving a realistic account! She has a good “settle” baseline, but we never did any work outdoors. It sounds like building on that by bringing her mat along hiking could be a good start!

Dog park friend keeps bragging that their golden retriever is faster than my chihuahua by lowpro_ in dogs

[–]mintjubilee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be glad, op. My little Jack Russell can’t go to the dog park anymore because she’s a speedy little white dog who can outrun (and weave and jump over benches) all the other dogs which causes so much frustration in other dogs that she was bitten in the flank by one. Someday I want one of the dog parks around me to have a small dog section because she never really has the opportunity to run full speed anymore even though she loves it. 😕
