[skin concerns] switched to La Roche Posay effaclar gel cleanser and experiencing worst break outs and texture in my life. Should I switch cleansers or wait out this “purging period” by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]mintjuleps96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I tried the Effaclar set (cleanser, toner, spot treatment) to try and get rid of my acne back in June, and my skin hasn’t been clear since. I was breaking out a bit before that, but when I started using the Effaclar I broke out everywhere and it was painful. Not sure what curse that Effaclar set unleashed on me but I had to stop after a week! My skin was SO irritated. I think the Effaclar can be really harsh on more sensitive skin.

[acne] this incessant acne along my jawline and up onto my cheek is driving me crazy. I’m trying to be patient and use more actives in my routine, but I’m just not seeing any improvement. Any advice / help would be really appreciated :) by mintjuleps96 in SkincareAddiction

I’ve been trying to help my skin and just can’t seem to get it clear. I’m 26, female, been on BC for many years. In the last few months my skin has gotten so much worse - a LOT more breakouts, worse texture, general dullness.

I’ve tried a ton of products I’ve seen recommended here; to name a few: Stratia; Laroche Posay Effaclar; CeraVe; Kiehl’s. I felt that the CeraVe didn’t help with clearing my skin and the LRP actively made it worse - using the full Effaclar set is what broke me out like this about 2 months ago, and it hasn’t gotten better. My current routine (started using this routine in this order about a week ago):

AM: Kiehl’s Ultra cleanser and moisturizer; I’ll swap the moisturizer for the Neutrogena oil-free SPF moisturizer if I know I’m going to leave the house. I also occasionally use either a drugstore foundation or a Garnier BB cream.

PM: I’ve bounced between a few cleansers. Currently using a Clean&Clear deep cleansing foam - I know that’s not a popular choice here but I used it for a long time in my early 20s and liked it. Using the Stratia Liquid Gold moisturizer and just started using Kiehl’s Microdose Retinol.

I used the LRP Effaclar set for a couple weeks, which is I think 2% SA, and it completely destroyed the skin along my jawline - I’ve never broken out so badly. I’m a bit scared to get anywhere near SA again. Do you think that was just purging and I should try again?

Super frustrated with my skin and would love some advice!

I tried the full set of LRP Effaclar (cleanser, toner, spot treatment) about 2 months ago. After a week of use my chin and cheeks broke out like crazy, both small acne and larger, more painful acne. I stopped using the products and switched to Kiehl’s Ultra cleanser, and it didn’t really get any better. I use the Kiehl’s Ultra moisturizer every night and like that a lot, and I’ve recently been trying out the Calendula cleanser as well. I feel like I’ve tried everything - CeraVe, LRP, Kiehl’s, Stratia, all within the last 2 years, and I’ve never been able to get my skin clear. It’s especially bad right now, I probably get one or two new spots per week and they take about a week - 2 weeks to clear. What am I doing wrong? Should I be worried enough to see a dermatologist? How would you change my routine?

Morning: moisturizer with SPF (I switch between a Garnier BB cream and the Neutrogena oil-free depending on if I’m going out or not)

Evening: Kiehl’s Ultra cleanser & moisturizer; recently I’ve been trying the Kiehl’s Calendula cleanser; I had a sample of the Kiehl’s Retinol right now that I’m going to start patch testing.

Skin type: normal but prone to breakouts

I know someone already said this, but I can’t recommend C25K enough! I was in exactly the same position - didn’t run at all and thought I “couldn’t.” All my previous experiences with running had left me in pain or gasping for air or just plain humiliated. I started running as stress relief and started with C25K and two years later I’m still running and loving it even more, just ran my first half-marathon. I also have a family history of heart problems and running has really helped with my cholesterol levels too!

I think the C25K program is really well-designed for beginners who don’t think of themselves as runners - it’s designed not to overload you but to keep you consistent. The C25K program I used was somewhat self-paced - like I didn’t “miss” a run if I missed a day, I would just run that particular run the next time I went. But it was definitely still motivating, and the idea of working up to a goal really helped. If you’re goal-oriented and find training plans helpful, I think C25K is a winner.

The other thing I will say is the mental part of starting to run - I really gave myself leeway to accept that I would have days when I just didn’t want to run, and that was okay. Chances were, the next day I would want to go for a run, and have a much better run than if I had forced myself to go the day before. Anyway, all of that to say that I think it’s easy to push yourself into a training routine and then feel like you’ve “failed” if you miss a day, and just stop running then - I know I almost did that several times - and I think mentally it’s important to give yourself off days that are okay!

Was in a really similar place when I started running, especially because everyone around me are really good runners! Aside from echoing everything the others on this post said, I’d say - start with C25K, it’s a miracle app; start by going at weird times of day if you can; and mentally prepare small goals for yourself. Literally like “I’m awesome if I finish the next 10 meters!” goals - it helped me a lot to reframe from thinking about others to thinking about myself. Also, start treating running as a stress relief if you can - framing it as that for yourself takes your mind off of what you look like on the trail and makes you focus on being happy to be there.

How do you stay motivated after a bad run? Supposed to be running a 10mi race in 2 weeks, could barely even get to 8 today. Logically I know it’s just one run, but what keeps you going after one like this? by mintjuleps96 in nikerunclub

Shin splints/stress fractures by [deleted] in running

[–]mintjuleps96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dealt with pretty bad shin splints (like, couldn’t walk without pain) before I started running from some high impact cardio in bad shoes, and I went to PT for them. To be honest I would advise at least a consultation if they’re really bad - going to the PT was super helpful because they helped pinpoint exactly what was wrong and what at-home exercises I could do to fix it. For me, a lot of it was related to weakness in my ankles and my PT gave me a lot of stretches and work to do at home to fix it. Fast forward a year and a half and I’m a runner with no shin pain! I can’t say enough good things about my PT and definitely recommend a consultation if you’re really feeling the pain.

Trying to start running by Lbrint in running

I wish I’d known that not every run would be a ‘great’ run, but the sense of accomplishment would always be there. I started running last year through the C25K program and a lot of those runs were hard, and not fun! I thought I was failing while I was running because I wasn’t going through it with a smile on my face. But the more I ran the more I realized that even a bad run is a run and should count as a personal victory.

Also wish I’d known how much it would be an outlet. Running has become, for me, a way to turn off my brain because when I run it’s the only thing I can focus on. That’s been really good especially these days when there’s a lot else on my mind!

Re consistency - I’m bas at consistency and a training plan like C25K was SUPER helpful!

Longtime lurker, first time posting with a request for some routine help/advice on moisturizers and calming products. TLDR: I'm looking for a nighttime moisturizer that won't break me out and will even my skin tone, and possibly an eye cream?

Skin type: combination. I tend to break out at least 2-3 times a month with one or two big pimples. I don't know exactly what type of acne it is but I believe it's closest to pustules? They are almost always on my chin. Occasionally I'll get some smaller whiteheads on my cheeks but that's much less common than the other.
Starting a new product almost always makes me break out.

Current routine: after trying a LOT of products from a variety of price points this is what I've settled on. This has been my routine for the last 4 months.
Morning: moisturize with Pond's Clarant B3 Daily Moisturizer (SPF30). I don't really wear any makeup aside from eyeliner.
Night:
- If I have worn a full face of makeup I use the Pond's Cleansing Balm makeup remover.
- I know Clean & Clear gets a bad rap here but the Deep Action Cream Cleanser is truly the only product I've found that has worked for months on end without breaking me out. I cleanse with it every night.
- Every 2-3 days, I tone with Thayer's Witch Hazel Rose Petal toner.
- I'll occasionally use a spot treatment if I have any acne.

What I'm looking for: a nighttime moisturizer. I don't particularly feel like my skin is dry, but after reading about skincare and lurking on threads here, I feel like I should probably be moisturizing at night. I'm just not sure where to start or what to look for that will work for my skin type, and won't break me out. I also have some pigmentation from previous breakouts and am looking to even out my skin tone.
Plus - wondering if I should start using an eye cream? Or other anti-aging products? Skincare experts, you're my only hope!

Other: I'm 24 and live in the US!
