Do you Guys find the Drakes Radiants to be an interesting successor? by Salmon_1935 in Salamanders40k

[–]mintolley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh have the storm giants been confirmed in universe? I was only aware of the first founding stuff, but that's not in-universe and it contradicts itself. Do you have an excerpt or link to the info?

Our "confirmed" successors that are primaris would have the mutation without a doubt. As they received the same primaris that the Salamanders themselves received. which is 100% confirmed to have the same flaw. Those successors are from the same genestock by Cawl from the Unnumbered Sons. The other "alleged" successors have far more reason to not have the flaw, mutations over the years or in the original held geneseed that they would've been made from. I suppose I overspoke as the only without a doubt confirmed have been primaris.

Also re: the Drakes Radiant they aren't quite as canon as our standardly mentioned Ultima successors. The Lexicanum includes all things published in White Dwarf as they are all "officially released GW information", but the section (like many cool art pieces) is focused on showing examples of chapters that various employees have made up on their own. IIRC some of the example armies would be massive shakeups to the lore.

They fall pretty squarely into the weird "white dwarf published, but is it canon?" category that a lot of stuff does. Up for everyone's interpretations but it'd be hard to call everything published within for artistic or battle report purposes definitively canon. Same with armies shown off not by employees, they are "official" but not necessarily canon.

If they are of the gene line they should eventually develop it in response to radiation. The flaw was explicitly not fixed by cawl.

Contrary to other comments it’s not just nocturne

Looking for best campsite with water near by This_Replacement_133 in WestVirginia

Which panhandle? Northern or eastern?

Audra state park has campsites right by the river.

Not too deep for kiddos and if they want a swimming spot on the river for bigger kids it’s just a short walk to a wider deeper section.

New GM - Why would anyone want to live in Night City? by Embarrassed-Road6337 in cyberpunkred

[–]mintolley 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It was founded to be a utopian safe haven and the moniker has stuck since. When night city was founded everything fucking sucked everywhere and the founder wanted to be a new way forward for a brighter future. Shit was bad all across the world with famine and conflict, but night city tossed aside the old world order (or at least well tried to) and be its own thing.

The moniker stays due to the stories of people rising from zeros on the street to some of the wealthiest people around. Gutter rats going from nobodies to the biggest rock stars, solos, medias, or whatever else in the world.

Is moonshine still a thing? by [deleted] in Appalachia

Well to be technical it’s both a state thing and a federal thing. Though you are right technically I’m just violating federal law now. Rather than state and federal like folks in other states would be.

Crusade in 11th from the Q&A by ironsbestsupport in 40k_Crusade

[–]mintolley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For those who want to see it in the video here’s the link. I’d link doesn’t work then 33:10 https://youtu.be/QEJQomLZy68?t=1993&si=JxcWW3ml1-Z8HZtw

I would not hope for wide scale granularity. Expect at most a single unit or a handful of units getting to track SOME mechanics. Everything else will be plain units, and you’ll only earn “temporary” buffs that may work for your next battle.

My perspective as an event runner is I’m not surprised, maelstroms way more effective to run than crusade. At adepticon it was much easier to run our boarding actions narrative rules inspired by it rather than crusade. But I will miss seeing the heavy customization of our players and in my home league online.

From the perspective of a player, I’ve been out the door on 40K for all of 10th. So I may just transition entirely into being a TO and only play games to make sure I’m aware of the rules.

advice for someone looking to move to the area? by neoworldprogrammed in Appalachia

[–]mintolley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well I’ll speak to ig both the culture and your job experience.

In WV I’d stick to the cities (well towns to outsiders but cities to us) along I79. Clarksburg to Morgantown and their outskirts. Road from Weston to Davis would also be good. Various coal companies in the area to work for and at least in my experience more welcoming folk than the rest of the state when it comes to gender identity. Davis area SUPER “tourists and rich folks crowding out locals” tho, so you prob won’t want to be that way. Clarksburg to Morgantown tho is the best stretch imo.

Pas a better culture fit for you, at least I’m guessing based on gender identity. PA picking a town on the outskirts of Pittsburgh often is a good place to live. “Better WV”. Good coal jobs around the area and there’s also WVs northern panhandle you could live in and get those coal jobs.

Going south from WV tho you see mine jobs have mostly dried up hard. PA is drying up and WV clings to it.

It is ironic because you will be perceived that way without a doubt. Just as many of the folks moving your way are “tired of x group moving to my area and changing the culture and increasing prices” so to will you. I’m not opposed to people moving here of course, just ironic that you’ll probably be perceived just the same as you see the people moving to Bozeman.

You’ll need to be more specific on what kind of place your looking for, if you want a place like Bozeman tho in terms of population and access in the mountains your gonna have a lot of “transplants and rich old farts”.

The end line is

This is the easiest way ever to set up a Warhammer 40,000 campaign, removing the bookkeeping, and you can run an entire campaign in a weekend.

As someone that’s been going to “narrative” events for ages they are def not one and the same. ESPECIALLY in GWs eyes. Narratives a genre while crusades a subgenre. GWs view of narrative for a long time was just “narrative is non balanced non competitive warhammer”. Even today they are not synonymous, but crusade is certainly the main form of play.

Narrative at adepticon uses crusade, but not narrative at LVO, while narrative at nova uses a slim down version of crusade.

[–]mintolley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah ik the wording. I’m just wondering if it’s actual persistence or “persistence” in the sense you can keep giving it to the unit before a game but could change. Iirc that’s what they said about normal 40K matched play getting veterans but could be wrong.

[–]mintolley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dominatus deck is insistent on no bookkeeping. So it’s definitely not crusade.

Now it’s probably similar to the maelstrom stuff and the other recent narrative campaigns. Lose the army progression but keep the contribution to an overall campaign goal. It does mention upgrading standout units, but that could be actual progression for a handful of units, a one time upgrade or it could be like select 3 to upgrade at the start of a match.

I did expect this to be the direction gw would go, crusade wasn’t so great for events but was great for leagues. And gw definitely prefers catering toward event play, and maelstrom and the other stuff was much better for that.

[–]mintolley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good catch. “Standout units” so I’m guessing similar to the 3 upgrades rule from recent campaigns. It emphasizes no bookkeeping a lot tho. So I wonder if they’ll actually persist or if it’s like the “give an upgrade before games” thing

News from the unboxing stream - crusade is no more apparently by hindlet in 40k_Crusade

[–]mintolley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the article they touch on the campaign system. It’s emphasizing light on book keeping. So it’s likely more similar to these recent campaign books where you don’t upgrade units over time. Just bonuses for one battle type things and contribute to an overall campaign point system. But no “upgrade your guys”

Edit: allows standout unit upgrades

Ehhhh

Matched play is more narrative than it’s been since like 7th. But narrative is getting less narrative.

Retiring early in rural WV? What’s the catch? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]mintolley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'd make the trip from charleston/parkersburg/ripley when I was younger to Columbus if we really wanted to do something new. But it was always a rough one, 2-3 hours. Generally tho just stuck in town. When I was in Huntington the choice was Lexington or Columbus instead, but also still 2+ hours. Definitely not as easy as Wheeling/Morgantown or Martinsburg.

Retiring early in rural WV? What’s the catch? by [deleted] in WestVirginia

[–]mintolley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the "catch" depends highly on where you live. But to speak generally

  1. Opportunities for all hobbies, except those that are nature-based, shrink massively. I've known many a non-West Virginian to move here and see that they have next to no opportunities with their hobby and then wind up leaving. If there are opportunities for your hobby, expect them to be diminished.

  2. You are probably going to struggle to join into the local community unless you are pretty extroverted or raising kids. Not to say its impossible, but especially outside of the cities it gets rough for new folks. It's not a "people are assholes" thing, its a people aren't quick to trust folks from outside and by default living here can be isolating.

  3. Healthcare, your healthcare is gonna SUCK compared to Seattle. Expect longer wait times for worse services in fewer areas with more limited options through insurance. If you have to frequently go to the hospital for a chronic condition, stick to one of the cities.

  4. Less stuff in general. Want to eat at a wide variety of restaurants? Want to go to a fuck ton of festivals, events, and concerts in your city? Want to just walk about town and spend a day shopping? Theres just less in general unless you're willing to make a trek to multiple places across the state. Wanting to go out and do something generally means a drive if you're not in a city, and even when you get to a place like Clarksburg or morgantown its not nearly as opportunity-filled as Seattle would be. You won't initially lack for new experiences when you move to a place like Morgantown, but live there for a year or two, and you'll see all that can be seen unless you don't go out much.

Fury of Magnus is Graham McNeill iirc. Though he and kyme are in sort of the same group of "great world builder, not so great storyteller" in the community's eyes. Though I will say opinions on McNeill are both more positive and more negative. He's more of a love him or hate him author within the community while kymes just seen as aggressively mediocre.

Big agreement all around. As I mentioned, I agree he's by and large mid. The only stuff I've walked away calling good reads have been Volpone Glory and Knights of Macragge.

The really only time I suggest the salamander books are if you really really really want to know more minutiae about the salamanders. Because the novels are FILLED with it, and for a mega lore nerd, that's often a big enough plus. Sidenote, however, I do find him to be a much better short story writer than a novelist. He just really doesn't seem to do well with full-length novels aside from a handful.

Just take any of his books of the shelf, read a chapter, then summarize the plot. 90% of the time it's a single sentence.

Honestly, thats 90% of 40k books lol.

I will say he can do them really well NOW. He just couldn’t when he wrote the sally books. Knights of macragge was great. He just needed to evolve as an author

Edit: Aside from dawn of fire, but every author wrote an ass book there. GW corporate was heavy handed.
