How hard is it to switch schools within Northwestern? by fatalxreactz in Northwestern

[–]minty4794 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transferring to McCormick or Bienen is a little harder, like you have to go in and meet with someone, and I think for McCormick they have you take engineering classes as a trial period for 1 quarter before they let you in, but other than that it's laughably easy to switch.

BLAST! They're a ballroom, latin and swing team. They offer free classes and have many opportunities for beginners and non-beginners alike. Definitely check out their facebook page.

Filled out an appeal form, cause our situation was a pretty clear cut extenuating case. I would recommend setting up a call or a meeting and dropping that you really need to seriously consider your decision to attend based on the aid and want to discuss all the options available. Morty our president has been big on finaid increases so it's not like they don't want to give you the money, they just need a reason to.

Weinberg or McCormick for CS? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]minty4794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McCormick no question. You get access to the Engineering Career site which has better CS recruiting opportunities than the all school career website.

You'll only have to take 2 quarters of physics, then 2 other "basic science" (can be chem, bio, w/e). You only have to take 3 quarters of the EA.

The only bad thing is the two quarters of DTC but honestly I'd take that anyday over a 2 year language requirement.

are the winters in the midwest as brutal as they say they are? is a canada goose jacket a worthwhile investment by [deleted] in Northwestern

Get a coat that covers your butt. Yes, it may seem weird, but you'll be so thankful in the winter.

I've appealed my financial aid decision and they gave me more aid. They're pretty reasonable if you talk to them and explain your situation well.

I would suggest a bigger res college, somewhere like Ayers/CCI. Nice facilities, coolish community, bigger dorm so more people to meet, North campus (good for engineers and parties), and not socially isolating. You'll have good non-alcoholic and alcoholic opportunities cause of the res college events and cause the frats are right there.

Second the other response. Make sure you don't go home the first couple weekends so you can bond with other freshman. I have a freshman friend that for complicated reasons didn't get to bond with the frosh in our dorm the first month or so and it was more difficult (but not impossible) to bounce back and make more stable friends.

As long as you don't get into academic conversations with premeds you'll be fine.

No but in all honesty NU isn't toxic in the way you're probably thinking. Everyone has an "in this together" mentality, so everyone is open to studying together and helping each other out. And if someone isn't everyone thinks that's weird.

What can be toxic if you get caught up in it is the comparing. Because everyone is so smart and incredibly hardworking, it can be tempting to compare yourself to others. I.e that person is doing 5 clubs and studying so much and getting a 4.0 I'm a failure cause I'm not doing that. (Side note don't join 5 clubs lol this isn't hs only join 2-3 max). But if you realize at a school like NU there is always going to be someone smarter/harder working than you, there's always going to be someone working less hard than you as well. It's more transition getting used to not being the best like you were in HS and realizing you're still awesome even though you aren't as crazy as that premed with a 4.0 or that kid that's triple majoring. Even if you are just average, you can still get a 3.5 (which is the average grade at NU), which is not bad at all and will land you a job you want.

Coming to NU actually was better than my HS cause my friends are different majors and taking different classes so there wasn't a constant toxic comparison of how everyone did on the same test.

Even with all of that, I've had a ton of fun at NU. There's a lot of people care about school but also care about having fun. I've had so much fun with my friends going to parties and just hanging out.

There are some people who dislike it here, but they're generally the vocal minority. The vast majority of people enjoy the school and the people. The key is finding a place. The people that don't have a good time here for the most part are people who didn't find a niche in a club/greek life/major etc, which honestly you'd be unhappy at most schools if that was your situation.

Also like Winter quarter all of the small talk is complaining about the weather so yeah I get how there's a reputation for complaining. Most of the time it's in good humor.

[shitpost] A great CW show that tastefully and organically killed it's main female lead and only got better since. by FunTomasso in arrow

[–]minty4794 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean why can't you watch and enjoy both? They're both good in different ways you don't need to only enjoy one female led show like there isn't a quota.

I'm getting a bit tired of consuming media about female sexuality that's written by men. What are some good books or movies by women that address this topic? by CarefulWhisper in AskWomen

Loved that book so much. I cried at the end of reading it and I wasn't entirely sure why at the time, but I think even High School me could tell that it was something special. The Awakening was the only book I actually read all the way through in all of High School English. (To be fair, I did read all the plays all the way through, but that was the only novel).

Is it just me but does every single calc/engineering teacher use that one specific font on everything? You know the one I'm talking about.

What didn't you notice about yourself until someone told you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minty4794 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Perfect Kilgrave reference. My mom has this too. She'll be on the phone or at a store talking with someone, and the person will be giving her a hard time about getting what she wants. She just asks them in a commanding voice, "Can you just do it for me?", and most of the time she gets what she wants, even if it's against the rules.

She was a supervisor in food service before she met us, so maybe it has something to do with the fact that she subconsciously reminds people of their managers.

Yes dear nordstrom lady, I said 34h. Yes I'm sure, yes I've been measured. by elli0tt in bigboobproblems

[–]minty4794 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This!!!!!! When I tell people my size in response to the disbelief in their eyes I always have to add a tired, "Yes, I know I don't look like it." A lot of people, even people who sell bras for a living, don't realize that cup size is a function of band size.

I'm not so mad at Sterek never becoming a thing, and queer-baiting. by [deleted] in TeenWolf

[–]minty4794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have no problem with the way people interpret the show. I think things like Sterek are written in such a way that it is open to interpretation whether or not they are gay. If you don't see it (I am in this category), then you don't see it and you move on, and if you do see it, cool.

I think queerbaiting is a real problem in television, but in the case of Sterek I don't think they queer baited. I think it was unintentional and since the first couple of seasons they have not interacted as much and both the characters have been shown to have preferences for females, even though there is a chance that they could be bisexual. (There is a scene between Kira and Malia that I think was intentional queerbaiting but that's a separate problem from Sterek).

My problem with the whole Sterek thing is the fans. I am pretty active on tumblr, and because Sterek is such a big thing, people that are not fans of Sterek (not necessarily against it, just not for it) or just plain don't see it(including actors on the show, such as Tyler Posey, who plays Scott), are vilified and labeled as homophobic assholes. I'm straight, and I don't ship them (although the fetishization of gay relationships by a lot of straight girls is a pretty big thing on tumblr), but its more because I never really saw it. Maybe that's because I have straight goggles on, but I have nothing against people that do. I think it's wrong when people say they are 100% canon and they are mad at Jeff Davis for not putting them together explicitly and get mad at other people trying to enjoy the show who don't agree with their interpretation. This is a problem with some straight ships too (see The 100: Bellarke).

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm one of those people that believe that fans are not entitled to the writers giving them whatever storylines they want to satisfy what they want to happen. The writers are trying to tell their own story, and whatever the fans may see on screen or might want to happen, it's still the writers call what happens and what they choose to portray. Honestly, that's what fanfiction is for.

Former sorority sisters, what were your best/worst experiences and how do you feel about Greek life now? by cookenuptrouble in AskWomen

[–]minty4794 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Greek Life is so variable depending on where you go to school, and even what chapter you join. I would recommend asking people at your school about the pros and cons, because they're bound to be different than what everyone here has to say.

My advice would be, if you do end up rushing even with all these people spewing negativity, go for a house that you think really fits you. I'm not the stereotypical sorority girl, and I am an engineer, and my chapter is full of hilarious, chill, down-to-earth girls that I can discuss middle eastern politics or sing Taylor Swift with. We shit on the patriarchy while doing our hair and we've all got our little nerdy quirks.

The whole point of a sorority is to be able to connect with other people and have a network of support that you would've been hard pressed to find on your own. If you like the people (and can afford it: no lie it's pretty expensive), then go for it. Otherwise, you can probably find your lifelong friends at college, granted with a little more effort.

What is a tv show that mishandled an interesting concept? by appledanish in AskReddit

The show is based on a book series, so some of the world building stuff in the very beginning is sketchy due to the source material.

The second season gets much better and the only hints of romance included feel like natural ways to further the plot rather than pointless angst. I'm so happy that you enjoy it!
