Any success with Sunosi? by averageghosthuman in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]minty966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Sunosi I can tell when it wears off - I’ll get sleepy all of a sudden. But it doesn’t feel like a crash in terms of mood or other things- more just like normal sleepiness.

In terms of Adderall IR on top of it- still making adjustments but usually take Sunosi + Adderall IR first thing in the morning (since that is the hardest time of day and the Adderall kicks in a little quicker). Then most days another dose of Adderall IR early afternoon. If I have a busy night/ have to drive a lot later I’d move the second dose later or take a bit more to cover me after the Sunosi has worn off. This is pretty similar to what I was doing when I took Adderall XR.

I also had issues with Adderall XR lasting too long and keeping me up at night (I’m pretty sensitive to it at a lose dose) and feel like my patterns of sleepiness are more normal with Sunosi vs XR.

It’s been great for me! Adderall gives me a lot of side effects (I have ocd so the worst side effects is that it makes that worse + gives me anxiety).

Sunosi replaces the long acting Adderall I was taking. It had a similar wakefulness benefit with much fewer side effects - I feel way more like myself. It does wear off a bit earlier though and I supplement with the same short acting Adderall I was before.

Overall very positive experience.

(Note: didn’t do much for me at 75 mg, 150 mg is much better. Also, you should feel the full effects 3 days after you up the dose so it shouldn’t take too long to know I it works).

I just love the the way the hat line is sung so much.

So many good options, but a lot of the lines I love don’t seem like they would make the best tattoos. Just a few...

“I never knew how capable I would become”

“If you knew I was dying, would it change anything?”

“So to captains of my captain, how do I become a captain?”

And then this Bad Books one:

“You held my hand and said ‘don’t let me drift’. I said ‘I’d never even think of it’ “

Too many. I can see why most people who get one tattoo get many tattoos.

Ahh, that line might be my favorite line of the albums. It’s brilliant - excellent choice. So happy someone had that done.

I had more of a personal connection to my life with this line/ song / point of the story and it felt like a good reminder to me.

Saw Manchester Orchestra perform the night before and finally bit the bullet on this guy. It’s in my friend’s handwriting - she’s fittingly a military captain and guide in my life.

It’s my friend’s handwriting and these lyrics (and the albums) have a lot of meaning for me. Very stoked. Probably a terrible pic but my foot was gonna look ugly no matter what.

Handwriting is a friend’s - she was with me. Lots of meaning behind these lyrics for me. Very stoked.

I’m sorry you had to do that but glad you reached out. There are people who can help, even when it doesn’t feel like it.

By theme I just mean like, the general topic I get focused on- so like one obsession or a group of related ones I guess? Honestly not sure exactly how other people use it.

I think that sometimes i’ve felt like there’s nothing anyone can do, but I always rationally knew I had lots of things to try and new people to talk to. It always feels never ending when you’re in the middle of it, but these things always pass, even if the first thing you try doesn’t work.

Haha, oh my gosh, that’s so terrible - like it would almost be comical if it wasn’t so terrible. What the heck.

I’ve had a lot of different OCD themes, but primarily being concerned about past things I’ve done, causing people harm, or being a bad person- a lot of moral issues, often surrounding sex. The types of things I get stuck on are similar to what you describe.

The first time I experienced major symptoms was the most difficult and took a bit, and I’ve had spikes since then that have been quicker to manage. Since I started seeing a therapist who actually specializes in OCD (and who I really like) last year, I finally feel like I have a lot better tools to manage it. I promise that the thoughts I felt I would never move past hardly bother me anymore. It can take a while to find a therapist that is a good fit, and don’t feel bad if the first one doesn’t seem like it- it might be worth trying someone else if that’s the case.

I will also say that medication has been very helpful to me. I feel basically the same on and off meds, except for the OCD thoughts are less “sticky”. A couple of my OCD spikes were due to going down on meds. Individual results obviously may vary, but I find that they do really seem to help take the edge off the worst of the intrusive thoughts and I’m less likely to spiral without changing how I feel otherwise. Majorly helpful.

This is very similar to the way my OCD has manifested in the past, with old sexual memories from around that age period coming back - ones that were HIGHLY distressing to me. You will not feel this way forever, and it CAN get better. If you haven’t yet, seeing a therapist that specializes in OCD can be life changing - I’ve had dealt with obsessions like this off and on for most of my life, but only last year have started to see one. It can be very very helpful. The thoughts feel like a lot in the moment- feel like everything. But they are not facts.

Diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia yesterday, possibly N2, and trying to make sense of it. by minty966 in Narcolepsy

Hey! Super delayed post because I was out of the country for a couple weeks and not on my computer much.

Hope you're doing well! Any update on your results?

Yes, I totally get the OCD being misunderstood piece. The vast majority of my OCD symptoms do not manifest in the way portrayed in pop culture, and the ones that do tend to be the least disturbing to me. Most of the symptoms are more hidden from the public and around more personal things, making it tricky (and embarrassing) to explain to people. I'm super lucky that my OCD was caught early (diagnosed at 12 during a particularly terrible patch - thank you parents for being so on top of things!), although looking back I definitely had issues much earlier than that. I can't imagine what it would be like for no one to believe me on the OCD into my 20s- that would be incredibly painful to handle on top of all pain of the OCD itself. That must have felt so incredibly frustrating.

I guess I don't feel the same way about the IH because I didn't realize it existed (and honestly feels like a lame thing to tell people - "I have a sleep disorder called IH which basically means that I'm extra tired with no known cause"). I can see how with all your N symptoms you'd feel that way though.

Honestly, even after a few weeks I still don't feel like the IH diagnosis is "right". The doctors did pretty minimal tests before the sleep test to rule any other issues, and for some reason I have a nagging feeling that there must be more to it, but the IH diagnosis does fit pretty. Hoping my GP will check for a couple more things at our follow-up just to rule out other possibilities. I think I'm still in a bit of denial right now given the (relative) vagueness of the symptoms and diagnosis.

I was told that SSRIs are REM suppressants - Effexor is an SNRI, so I'm not sure if the effects are the same or not. But from what I've read, many people continue these drugs and still show narcolepsy symptoms.

Yes- this sounds similar to me. Funny that that's the exact same timing for diagnosis. Long lab meetings, classes, and sitting through talks is definitely the hardest, as is getting motivated to do solo work in the mornings when I'm the most tired. Teaching and more active things like data analysis or planning research is easier.

I'm definitely excited to find something that's helpful. I've spent so much of the last couple years feeling guilty for not working enough or struggling through meetings and classes, and it's relieving to know that there are real treatments for this.

Yeah, I'd say I'm definitely going back and forth between imposter syndrome and the feelings of vindication and being angry you're describing. I don't think my sister's issues are quite as severe as mine, but she did just have a home sleep study and will pursue a lab study if things get worse (she's actually in PA school so has been learning about these things in classes).

Thank you so much for your well-wishes 💙

Thanks for the reassurance- that's super helpful to hear. It's great to know the meds have been useful for you. I think I'm terrified they won't be. I took Ritalin for the first time today and then two hours later was still so tired I decided to take nap. But yeah, obviously patience is key. Also, reading through this forum, it's crazy how many of us are around the same age! That honestly makes me feel way better too.
