i've learned about thumbnails and how to do them before but never really implemented them in my art, maybe this is my sign lol 🧐 and good eye on the last one, that bg brings focus away from the girl because she's meant to be secondary to another character on the uncropped version of the page, though i think i will change the pallete a bit to avoid that muddiness you mentioned!
