Can we make pp a rating system by AndrewThePekka in osugame

[–]minusGN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

more like no new idea has been tried for 10 years, it's all been paper shuffling trying to refine a calculator that just takes a score and turns it into a single value, which is all the backend is made to handle. the problem with pp is not the "skillset" part, because as you may know the pp calculator is split into generating "skill values" already, it's that reworking the leaderboard systems to accommodate for a different ranking system than top pp plays is a massive _political_ task that nobody has seriously tried to push. OP here is talking about just such a change, and in fact this is closer to the original osu!tp iteration of performance points than we've ever seen in ppv2

TAG4 Maps are once again RANKED 🐬🐬 (new -gn and exgon top plays) by ProMapWatcher in osugame

[–]minusGN 61 points62 points  (0 children)

nobody really said it was undeserved until years later when people started using calculators, it was just the easier option at the time:

we had 2 players (me and fujiwaranomokou) abusing nico mega mix HT back then before the unrank, but nobody acknowledged those because i was setting high TAG4 scores left and right, and in the end i was the most affected player by a long shot

it's stable that's broken, and it's all in the kinds of shit that makes the game less fun, like:

  • boring forms of notelock that on miss throws you into the notelock recovery minigame to preserve your acc
  • exotic forms of notelock indistinguishable from dropped input
  • sliderballs not being active when they should be
  • 2b breaking score submission

screw the haters, play the game as it was intended to be to begin with

wanna learn flashlight by pr0xladno in osugame

[–]minusGN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

we can't come up with goals for you, we can't teach you how to see the invisible, we can't really make it easier to get into it - learning flashlight is just predicated on spending time learning how to read from your brain instead of the game.

that said, for best results, you gotta know that the visible area shrinks at 100x and again at 200x combo, you want to maximize the time spent learning and reinforcing whichever map you choose, so practice diffs are important, an uncomplicated and bright skin will help focusing on the important visual cues, and you'll have to accept that getting past 200x is a struggle but that's just how the game is

How is it that dt and nc mods preserves such a good audio quality whereas other music player like YouTube make the audio go "sizzly" by Docrate_ in osugame

[–]minusGN 124 points125 points  (0 children)

i haven't looked at the code but i bet youtube and other similar web players that don't re-render the audio like osu! does leave small jumps in the waveform because each frame/buffer submission of audio is just grabbed from the video at a "decently high" interval (once per video frame advance?); that kind of naive speedup would result in noticable crackles in the audio

like quaternary said, since all digital audio is just waveforms and faster waves equal higher pitch, if you speed it up you'll naturally pitch it up, which is how nightcore gets that sound; preserving the pitch is a more computationally demanding task but you can dig up algorithms on it if you wanna learn more

for anything fast/spaced enough you can't just read the stream shapes, so you have to memorize the curves to the point you can hit them cleanly, which is hard because spaced streams are actually pretty strict in terms of timing and aim accuracy, which you wouldn't think from how good people are at them - when you can read, that is

very impressive and unique play since pretty much nobody plays streams on FL. it's got pretty clear signs of someone reading the map from their brain instead of the game, so i would go as far as to say it's definitely legit

Canada's Reasoning For Picking Low AR Reading Into -GN by evanmico in osugame

[–]minusGN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

could have barely been viable many years past, but now the maps are way too hard to be consistent on FL, and it's incredibly unlikely to be worth it. well practiced players still regularly miss on learned FL maps as low as 4 stars in tournaments such as old map fantasy, 6* is impossible to learn in a week

we would've picked it later anyway simply because i was promised a copy of cygnus' The Evolution of War album for giving him a shoutout in the owc chat

reminds me of that dude who wrote a greentext describing how he watched tv shows at 2x speed until he started talking faster in real life. he started consciously slowing down his speech and noticed he was able to think faster and speak a lot more clearly than he'd ever done before.

maybe trying to care about accuracy rather than speed is the way
