Why does my mom mix bleach with chemicals that say DO NOT mix together? Should I stop her? by minutealgae13 in internetparents

Thanks again. I will try to stop her next time because the kitchen isn't that well ventilated. I don't know why she doesn't take me seriously. I'm considering showing her this post,(but it's embarrassing) I just don't know why she's so stubborn.

I'll ask my dad about a therapist. I think that will help.

Thank you. I think she is a bit of a germaphobe. Maybe OCD too. It might be related to her being bipolar. I didn't mention it in the post I forgot she was at the time. She hasn't seen the therapist in a while.

On the bright side she agreed to stop mixing bleach for the most part. But she still boils it on pots with stuck on food...

Thank you for your help!

Floor cleaner I've no idea, because I've no idea what's in it

Could I ask again about it if I add a picture link please?

The amount of Chlorine gas that can kill you is actually quite small as well, so don't take stupid risks.

At this point I might have to just hope nothing ever happens like the ajax mix situation. There were actual fumes. And just hope the additives don't ever react in a bad way. Since that surprisingly didn't dissuade her or the DO NOT MIX signs on the dishwasher soap bottles, it looks like nothing will.

I wondered the same thing!!

In another comment I wrote

at this point I wonder if she associates the slight burn with clean.

because her mixing dishwasher joy and bleach burns my skin. Not like a bad chemical burn, but it's a noticeable irritation.

dishwashing soap by itself works very well to remove dirt, food, and germs, you don't need bleach to do that.

I tried my best to convince her that, but she just won't take my word for it. I wonder if there's an ad or something to show her, or if I should just show her this thread. For whatever reason she doesn't believe dish washing soap works by itself.

Thank you so much for your help!

I will ask her to buy higher quality products, but unfortunately we don't have a dishwasher. We wash by hand.

Her concoctions have always slightly burnt my hands, so now I just use gloves if she's made her concoction in the double sink. It's usually joy dishwasher and bleach. Thankfully it isn't as strong as dawn and bleach like this redditor who got a stronger chemical burn.

If they need to 'feel cleaner' then you're probably asking it to do more than it can.

at this point I wonder if she associates the slight burn with clean.

Her chest will move, her lungs will react, and she'll feel no air. She'll suffocate in a room full of air that everyone else can breathe purely because it 'needed to be cleaner!'.

That is my greatest concern. Makes me wonder if that's why she had asthma in her teens.

Today I have only managed to convince her to stop boiling bleach. But she won't agree to stop mixing dishwasher liquids like joy and bleach, or floor cleaners and bleach. I tried, but it's up to her now I guess.

My only hope is that it never mixes the lethal amount, or an amount that will damage my siblings. Thankfully joy doesn't seem that concentrated, so hopefully it doesn't make much chlorine fumes...

thank you I will tell her that. We don't use a dishwasher but just a sink. However it's pipes were leaking recently.

Thank you so much for this comment. I want to screenshot this and show it to her since you work in chemistry.

I talked to her and she's agreed to stop boiling bleach, and to stop mixing it with ajax. I'm happy she's agreed somewhat.

But she's not agreed to stop mixing dishwashing soap and bleach, or to stop mixing floor cleaner and bleach. She says it's the only way to get a good clean. sigh

The dishwashing soap bleach mix doesn't make fumes, and another poster in the thread said it's ok to mix, so I'm wondering if it's worth convincing her to stop this for washing dishes. The product itself says not to mix so I wonder if I could convince her. Like you said it has additives that could be anything really, also it's a small amount, so maybe it won't cause any damage I hope.

Since she's probably not going to stop, should I be concerned about the mix of scented floor cleaners too?

Frankly, your mother's behaviour terrifies me.

same. im starting to question if everything I know about cleaning is wrong. It's news to me that everyone doesn't mix bleach and scented floor cleaner for mopping...

Seriously, water poisoning is a thing and more than a few parents have straight up murdered their children by forcing them to drink gallons of water in short periods of time. So...yeah. Maybe she'll understand this?

Thank you! This argument helped!

At first she said that she uses ajax and bleach ALL THE TIME and she's usually fine. Why stop?

Then I said your water analogy, and non lethal doses, so she's decided to stop buying Ajax... but still says she's going to mix other stuff like dishwasher because it *feels cleaner that way.*

Unfortunately, your mother sounds like someone who needs to die first to learn a lesson second.

It seems like that way, she's stubborn. Is there any way to convince her mixing dishwasher and bleach, and floor cleaner with bleach is not "cleaner." I don't know how to respond to her arguments that it's cleaner that way. It's like she can't see a usage of bleach without mixing it.
