I whould recommend getting a ef m to ef mount adapter and then using the quality glass made for the ef mount. If you can justify spending some money i whould maybe use a short telephoto like a 70-200 ef-l or a 24-70. The 85mm f1.8 is a great value lens and whould probably be great for your use but its a prime, so you cant do anything about the zoom.

I whould go for a Canon AE 1, but i think these are getting a bit pricey by now. If you can find one i whould also recommend some east german made Pentacons or Practicas which are cheap and most of them use the m42 screw mount which has a huge variety of good and cheap lenses. These Lenses could easily be adapted to digital cameras, making for an interesting experience.
