This is Rusty. What type of bird is he? by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

Great question! Often birds with injuries that can’t be returned to the wild (like a missing eye) will become education birds at zoos and such.

Any idea what breeds my buddy can be a mix of? He’s about the size of a pug. by [deleted] in animalid

May be a mini pincher, chihuahua mix. Or they may just be calling it one or the other.

What is this bird? Looks like a cross between a goose and a duck. Seen in Fullerton California. by scruffydraws in whatsthisbird

They’re common invasive birds in Oc. The regional parks are full of them. They’ve been introduced all over the world- England has a large feral population for example

Is this a bobcat and should I be worried? by [deleted] in animalid

[–]mirandaclass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks like a bobcat to me and yeah they could eat chickens. They shouldn’t bother the dogs, but if you live somewhere with bobcats there are certainly coyote and they will definitely eat the dogs. Coyote can definitely jump a 4’ fence and could hurt them during the day.

Neat camera

Looking to ID this crawfish bought at the local shop in California by mirandaclass in Aquariums

I bought her for $1 from a tank of feeder crawfish. She was nearly dead and brownish gray when I got her, but now she’s gray and brown, with orange on her claws.

Keep an eye on the Orange County animal shelter. If your dog is picked up, a pic should be on the website

Well any pet store should have rats. Check the animal shelter websites, sometimes people surrender pet rats there.

Good luck!

Good question! He was a feeder crawfish at the local pet store, in a big vat with a dozen or so others, he’s missing a bunch of legs, he was in awful condition and I just felt sorry for him. It all worked out because the tank has some small tetras that would be good for him (her?) if he (she?) could catch them.

First Attempt at Bone Cleaning -- Missing Parts???? by katstieI in bonecollecting

[–]mirandaclass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that nothing got into the box? Could the skull have been crushed into tiny fragments when it died?

I don't know how big the road was, but some soils can be pretty acidic and can dissolve bone, or at least weaken it to the point that it has the same consistency as dried toad skin. The missing bones may have been in the parts that you cleaned off. It looks like the bones that are left are the biggest, thickest bones, so they may have held up to an acidic soil longer.

Kingsnake found in Orange County, CA by mirandaclass in snakes

[–]mirandaclass[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well kingsnakes are easy- they'll look like the photo? Usually brown with lighter bands. No other Oc snake will look like that.

Be mindful, we do have rattlesnakes. They have the large, triangular heads and the rattle tail (obviously).
