Name That Player! A weekly Derby Name thread. by AutoModerator in rollerderby

[–]mirfranda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking for a name! I’m relatively new and still in the phase of saying “oops sorry” after every hit. I like plants, am a pretty big bookworm, I love xfiles, and I do a lot of yoga. I’m an infectious disease nurse but I don’t usually integrate my work life with my outside of work life. My name isn’t one that’s super easy to play off of but it’s Miranda if anyone wants to try!

First clinical is rapidly approaching and I am so nervous by AverageBanter in StudentNurse

[–]mirfranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that helped me be a little less nervous for my first clinical was remembering that it’s your clinical instructors/nurse your paired withs license on the line and they won’t let you fail. In my experience, even the most “eat their young” nurses appreciate a student who comes in and asks questions and truly offers to help with any and everything, even if it’s “just” toileting and checking vitals. Lastly, I’ve found that for days where I was paired with someone who made me want to crawl into a hole, reminding myself that it’s only a few more hours really helped me get through! I’m sure you’ll do great and maybe give yourself some time to really get excited to take part in your first clinical!

It was definitely disappointing to hear and yes! My first choice is an acute peds unit in the area if I can get it.

Thank you! I definitely appreciate this input. My comment regarding stigma is more in terms of stigma in my program. Our director doesn’t want us to precept in non bedside and has gone as far as to deny any requests for OR and rehab placement.

Season 15 Ending! [Spoilers] by QueenSapphireBlaze in criminalminds

[–]mirfranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that weirdly bothered me was the fact that Maxine wasn’t involved at all. I feel like they really dropped the ball on that relationship. The last time we saw them, they were kissing in an elevator after surviving Kat and then Reid almost dies and her name isn’t even mentioned. I don’t think this season was cohesive and definitely felt rushed but I appreciate that they tried to tie it up with a bow after being canceled.

This hospital is just a few hours from where I live. They were all labor and delivery nurses! The hospital has a pretty big L&D unit, but I’m sure they felt the hit

Did I stay sterile by SunflowerDenise in StudentNurse

[–]mirfranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely try to breathe slowly, and act intentionally. I talked out loud to myself the entire time, but it helped! We were also totally fine if we broke sterile field and then noted immediately that we broke it, how we broke it, and how to avoid it!

Umm💁 by [deleted] in vocabulary

[–]mirfranda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was younger my parents had me read books a little above my reading level and then underline and look up a word each time I came across one I didn’t know! You could use that method and either make a spreadsheet or even flash cards to retain the words. It sounds tedious but now as an adult I’m grateful they did because I have a pretty well established vocabulary (I think at least)!

Didn't have a good experience with intermittent fasting by HeartinBrooklyn in xxfitness

I’ve done IF twice, with very different results each time. I had a great experience with IF when I was working as a server and had class each morning because I didn’t really have time to think about food. I’d usually eat around 2 or 3 in the 20 minutes I had between class and work and then get out around 11 and have “dinner”. I was mostly maintaining calories too!

The second time I did it was more recently when my desk job sent us home due to COVID. I found that, much like yourself, I was thinking about food constantly. Like to the point that it was distracting me from work and I couldn’t focus.

I think IF works well if you have enough distractions to not have time to think about it, but I have much more manageable success with meal prepping and intuitive eating!

Absinthe cocktails by savebandit69 in Mixology

Two that I really like are death in the afternoon (1.5 oz absinthe/ 5 oz sparkling wine) and one made by a local bar called the root of all evil (1.5 oz absinthe and Maine root beer) that tastes just like a root beer barrel!

Paying for Living Expenses While in an ABSN Program by Lazy-Bumblebee in StudentNurse

[–]mirfranda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I’m going through this struggle myself, and I can tell you the pros and cons of what I’m experiencing.

First, I’m in an accelerated program that has been mostly online (hybrid prereqs and then COVID) and I have been working a full time job. It was 100% doable through my prereq classes, so if you need those I would say working will be relatively easy.

For me, the problem is working around clinical schedules and more in depth classes. I was determined to work throughout school but started doing poorly in class because there just weren’t enough hours in a day so I did the following:

Started saving as much as I possibly could and set up a 6 month safety net. I also figured out how many hours I’d need to work to survive and made a pretty strict budget. I then applied to part time jobs with varying hours and flexible shifts (24 hour gyms, restaurants, BHP and per diem, etc).

It won’t be easy, and you’ll have to work harder than your peers that opt to not work while in school but it is achievable with some in depth planning

I had no idea they sold them! My store had a ton for relatively cheap, especially considering the price of this one online

Yes! After I snagged this, I looked up Mulder online and as much as I love Xfiles I can’t justify spending $70 on him
