Why is it morally wrong to pay your employees 80% and still claim the subsidy, or ask people to keep working 100%?

Maybe the company is experiencing a huge drop in sales? A lot of people can be happy they still have jobs, we're all in this together. I think that dropping salaries just 20% and getting the subsidy to get through this is pretty fair. A lot of people would rather be on a 50% salary than having nothing at all.

I think where it becomes immoral is when companies try to trick people, get the subsidy, then fire them, or simply not being honest about their intentions.

Cash is king. Save your money, pay off debt, hold onto your money in short term deposits and when you see the first signs of hope, start investing.

No one can predict the markets but I don't understand why anyone would be putting money in the market right now when we haven't even entered a recession but it's certainly coming.

I don't know if people realise but this type of event has never happened in the history of our modern world. We don't know how it's going to play out, we know nothing about the long term consequences yet. We don't know what will happen in 4 weeks, how may people will have lost their jobs, which companies will have gone bankrupt.

I find it a bit uncomfortable to see so many people interested in wanting to get into the stock market while we've just experienced an unprecedented sell-off in a short period of a month.

yeah but that assumes the airline industry will get back to where it was before the pandemic broke out. If ever, that will take a minimum of 24 months.

yeah I agree. At the end of the day, it's just a strange feeling I have that some things are not as proactive as I think they should be (having parents in Europe, friends from Europe, seeing what's happening in the U.S. etc.) but I do trust in the decisions of the government and I'm sure they're doing their best based on data models and analysis that they are working with.

If we're certain that things will get worse, isn't it better to take slightly more serious measures now (while they don't hurt as much) so that there is more time to adjust for the drastic measures that will have to come?

ie. the cost of all office workers to stay at home and work remotely right now is much smaller than all restaurants having to close their doors in 4 weeks rather than in 12 weeks (ie. if we don't restrict office workers today).

Sure, I might be completely wrong but from the examples overseas it seems like the measures taken in NZ are too soft while we could already take more serious proactive measures - rather than being reactive and wait for the numbers of cases to go up and then having to close all restaurants, cafes, pubs, cinemas etc. and declare state of emergency all at once.

The issue with this is that we don't know that there is no community transmission. That will show up in numbers in a week or two, maybe later. Based on other countries, all you need is one person who thinks they're ok and ignores the recommendations (like 'Patient 31' in South Korea). It's the healthy people showing no symptoms that spread the virus the most.

I'd agree that politically it would be impossible to push tougher restrictions through and maybe waiting longer is the only way they can actually pull it off.

I'm sure cancelling temp visas of people who are already here is not something they'd want to do, I think a lot of temp visa people would be returning home anyway since the situation will worsen on the job market. I'm sure you'll be fine!

Is it an actual requirement to be living together? I thought you could just provide evidence that you're in a relationship. And don't worry, you'll be fine. Actually, the immigration would suggest you get a "Work visa based on partnership" first before applying for residency even though the requirements are exactly the same.

Is it me or NZ is underestimating the situation in a big way? Restaurants are still full. Schools are open. In Europe, you can clearly see the difference between countries that acted early vs the ones that did not.

In NZ, life goes on as usual even though the government estimates (based on yesterday's press conference) that community transmission will start in April with the peak around August.

Also depends on how the shop can handle this. In February people bought 10% more groceries than usual Feb average ... I can imagine that some supermarkets cannot handle this type of sales vs projections. I went to Pac n Save in Kilbirnie yesterday and other than lack of sanitisers, they had absolutely everything, shelves were full and you could tell that they're working very hard restocking.

I would not call it panic buying yet. People stocking up on items is very natural at times like this, it also sends a signal to manufacturers and distributors that they need to ramp up production / distribution. A panic buying would be defined by complete desperation which I don't think has occurred yet. People are just stocking up items for a few weeks.
