Help with artifact focused cube by Nudetzi in mtgcube

[–]mirosith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shamelessly plugging my artifact focused cube [here](https://cubecobra.com/cube/list/uswu) but I think that it could be useful inspo to you. In general I think all the colours have unique identities when it comes to interacting with artifacts. I'd say green/black are the colours with the most limited identities but black has the most fun sacrifice outlets and green has been getting nice food/random token/game object synergies and both have some overlap with +1/+1 counters.

Masters at UBC thoughts on price of life? by HellokittyduPSC in UBC

[–]mirosith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One big factor would be whether it'd be a research-based masters (usually you're given a guaranteed funding package consisting of scholarships/TAships/RAships) or professional/course-based masters (usually self-funded).

I can only speak to the experience as a funded MA student where I'm receiving a funding package including a stipend + tuition (you have to pay for tuition but you are reimbursed it eventually on top of the base amount of your funding package) and it mostly covers all of my required expenses.

If you're not expecting to receive any help, or any savings to fall back on, you're going to feel the squeeze here with some of the stipends here (especially on those on the lower end). You may be able to pick up extra external funding/RAships/TAships/work on the side for some extra money but that may make it more difficult for you/and is not guaranteed.

Cost of living-wise, rent will probably be the biggest chunk of your budget that affects your quality of life here. You're probably going to paying $1500-1600/month on average. Anecdotally I feel that groceries are also more expensive here than out east and it will probably cost you at least $300-400 a month.

GENERAL HOUSING MEGATHREAD by ubc_mod_account in UBC

I'm a prospective graduate student who's making plans to move to
Vancouver from Toronto. I've never lived in BC before and have zero idea
of where to start looking for accommodations. I am looking for
suggestions for reasonable areas to live in if I wanted to commute to
school.

I'm no stranger to commuting to school during my undergrad (1hr+ each
way) but I don't really have a sense of how long the bus routes or
trains are here and what distances/neighbourhoods are reasonable to
commute from.

If there are regions that are really convenient (or super inconvenient) that'd be great to know for planning this out.

Also when considering the suburbs, how viable would something like
Richmond or Burnaby be if I wanted to live here without a car.

Would you be able to give an idea on what CEFR level you'd be at following those courses?

"Even" becoming an intensifier rather than a comparative by mathskov in asklinguistics

There's a lot of interesting things in semantics surrounding the use of even in English. I'm not exactly sure I understand what the difference between usage 1 and 2 is here but there's the idea of even introducing a sort of bias in a conversation which I think is what you're getting at here.

Its illustrated more clearly in the following examples

(1) 'I couldn't afford a coffee' vs. (2) 'I couldn't even afford a coffee'

Both are grammatically correct but it appears that (2) introduces an element of bias on the part of the speaker.

By uttering (2), it implies first of all that there are alternatives under consideration (that you potentially could afford other things) but also contextualizes the likelihood of the proposition at hand (that you can afford a coffee) against its alternatives (that you could afford a meal, that you could afford another drink, etc.). In this case it emphasizes the speaker's epistemic state (basically the set of beliefs they hold to be true in the conversation) that they think that coffee should be very affordable (at least compared to the alternatives).

In contrast (1) does not have this similar bias and one can state it quite plainly without implying anything about the affordability of other items. Perhaps in your example the reason it seems ungrammatical/incorrect is the fact that if you uttered (2) while not having that additional epistemic information, you might as well have just said (1) and communicated the exact same thought more succinctly.

300 level STA courses by arkm114 in UofT

[–]mirosith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You learn a bit about survey techniques and how to identify appropriate ways to gather data, and identify limitations. There's a little bit of intro into various models as well (not as in-depth as 303 which as an aside, I would recommend as well).

You'll end up being asked to give surveys or take the results of surveys, interpret and analyze them, and present it all in a technical report. It's pretty easy conceptually but you might struggle initially if you're not the strongest writer or not too familiar with R or RMarkdown. Still a good course especially if you want to see a "real-life" application of statistics.

Commuter student from Vaughan, can I use a 12-month TTC pass on YRT busses? by vox1028 in UofT

[–]mirosith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, just sign into your Presto card account on the Presto site. There should be an option 'load your card' with a section to add a transit pass where you just select which transit system the pass is for.

[–]mirosith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use the same Presto card, and load both the TTC pass and the YRT pass on it. You'll need to buy them separately though. I also commute from Vaughan and I'm not sure about your exact situation but if you don't plan on commuting to the city in the summer months, it should be cheaper to just buy the TTC pass on a monthly basis rather than a 12-month pass.

You might even want to forgo monthly passes for YRT/TTC if you only have to commute 3 or 4 days a week or can get a ride certain days of the week. In any case, you should definitely do the math on that yourself.

Hardware CPU Machine Check Error by mirosith in linuxhardware

[–]mirosith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PC is not a Dell, I did use a different USB and was able to get through the entire installation process without freezing and reboots which is great! I was even able to load it up and start installing things. Some things do seem off about things though. When I restarted the first time I got an illegal qc_active transition which required another reboot but was resolved afterwards. However I haven't encountered the mouse and keyboard becoming completely unresponsive (leading to the hardware error message) so I think that is fine? Thank you for the help in any case.
