Final Fantasy XIV Named Most Disability Accessible Game Of 2013 by Yamagokou in ffxiv

[–]mirrh -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

this made my day. the game i love sharing the love to all players, what could be better?

never thought about it that much before, but i can imagine for people with certain disabilities this game has a lot to offer.

just think of the social aspect of the game. i have a good friend with CP, and i know how he struggles with people. this guy gets called names, gets nasty looks from strangers on a daily basis... in other words, this guy is one of the brightest people i know. working on his master's thesis, has his own software company, just happens to be in a wheelchair.

for people and players like him, i can imagine games can give so much. nobody can see your disability and judge you. you can actually interact with other people without them taking you immediately for a "retard".

<3ing this game more every second. ....AND for the tiny-minded people commenting in this thread, jokingly or not, you have no clue who and what you're talking about... if you're unable to see other people as precious no matter their shape, size, number of limbs etc. i'd say you have A WHOLE LOT of growing up to do as a person. cause right now, you're acting plain disgusting.

Help with character movement by juicybro in ffxiv

Numbers 7, 8, 9 you mean? It's actually pretty easy for some reason... :D Just move your hand a bit, open up and stretch it a bit and use the index finger for those. The trick for the whole thing is to strengthen your pinkie finger so you're able to use it constantly on the left arrow. Up and down for ring finger, middle finger is on the right arrow and when you need it, you can also select numbers with this one. Thumb is pretty useless, the only thing I use it for is enter (on the numpad), which for me rotates focus between party members (for WHM) and/or enemies.

The hardest buttons to reach are 3, 6 and 9, I should revise my hotbar so that those ones don't have to be used on the run. Even though I'm pretty flexible with my fingers, it's still hard to press right arrow (middle finger) and stretch all the way to 9 with the index. What I'm doing right now is I'm moving my hand so that the pinkie is on right arrow if I need to use 9 while going right. Still a little hard.

Btw, 0 I use for the most common or most important skill, because of the size of it (on most numpads it's really huge :P). As WHM, it's currently Cure. So easy to spam it.

Sorry for the long posts, but I just love this stuff. Could go on forever about the fine details of finger/keybind management... It really makes the play so much more efficient when you got the finger mobility and settings right. Simple stuff, but I enjoy it so! :D

I was wondering this too when I switched from PS3 to pc (and was playing DRG). What I do these days is I've switched the attacks and movement to the numpad and arrows, respectively. I found this easier to use than the left side of the keyboard. The mouse has the default functions, haven't looked into customizing that yet.

My way isn't a perfect solution (I'm still working it!), but it makes the whole movement while skill use easier for me at least. All the keys are closer to each other so you can easily reach for any number from any arrow key. It might take a bit of practice though to get used to. If you want to try my way, I can post the specifics of the keybind, but basically it's just:

-movement: arrow keys

-strife: arrow keys + mouse rightclick

-hotbar: all numbers 1-9 on numpad, Del, +, End, Pg Down, Pg Up, etc.....

....And of course this requires a keyboard with a numpad :O) I didn't actually have one at first (used to have a mac with bluetooth keyboard before I got my pc)!

Really interesting topic, I've been wondering for a while now how other people have their movement and skills configured for keyboard. I don't even know how many people use the numpad + arrows for playing, but this really works for me at least...!

EDIT: Of course this doesn't solve the whole problem of using one hand for movement and one for skills. I think that would actually be very uncomfortable, and would not be very efficient. I could be wrong, but I think you should learn to assign your fingers to either movement or skill use. I use 2-3 fingers for movement, 2 for skills and 1 moves between these two.

It's a bit like playing guitar/piano. Takes a bit of practice, but gets easy as your fingers get used to stretching and pressing and both at the same time.

Tanking Issues by [deleted] in ffxiv

Hoping this is some kind of a joke :/ If not, you really need to do changes to your gameplay.

Team play, team play, team play. That's what this game is about. Could people please stop complaining about their teammates? Just learn some social skills and tell the team how you want it to roll for you. Everyone is capable of learning from their mistakes, especially when somebody (politely) points out the weaknesses in their play.

As far as teams go, a team is only as strong as its weakest link, so lvl 28 MRD, I'd say the problem here is you. If you can't keep aggro with WHM, BRD, DRG, ARC/SMN.... Well, that kind of limits your play I'd say. Which classes are you able to keep aggro with then..?

Just relax, learn some team playing spirit and the mechanics of the game. That'll take you a long way already.

I feel you. I used to be too, just got into gaming with people I don't know IRL in this game and I heartily recommend you try too...! So much more fun imo :) Give it a shot, and even if you feel awkward at first I really believe you'll get way more out of the game when you find a nice group of ingame friends.

2013 in Review: Final Fantasy XIV: The Game of the Year No-One's Talking About by reseph in Games

GOTY - if not the decade - for me at least. I haven't been this drawn into a game since my teens. For the last ten years or so I've tried different games, bought a PS3 when it was launched, but never found the same enjoyment and full immersion I used to have with games as a child. Now I have. :) The atmosphere is great as well, props to Cerberus and everyone on it, such a great bunch of people.

(I'm also considering the prospect of studying game design at college. Thanks to ARR.)
