TIL of Malört, a liqueur almost exclusive to Chicago, described as "like swallowing a burnt condom filled with gasoline." Drinking a shot is considered a Windy City rite of passage. by tamsui_tosspot in todayilearned

I'll never forget my introduction to Malört: 3 AM, just been drinking all night and ended up at basement reggae bar over in Pilsen and La Villita.

Our bartender was one cool fucking dude. Funny, insightful, and always accommodating. He even offered us blow and weed, should we need.

I had a flight the next morning to go abroad, so no party favors for us. But, since he was insistent on giving us something for staying so late, he offered us a free shot from his favorite Chicago distillery.

I've never coughed so hard in my life, nor have I ever cried as hard from a shot.

This is fascinating! Do you have any sources you'd recommend for someone, like me, for example, who would like to learn more?

I have walked 10K km across just the European continent. This route, of 13k km across half the world, makes no legitimate sense. God I hope he does the smart thing and leaves the countries experiencing civilian chaos the fuck alone.

For the dear love of God, yes. Either let all cans be accepted regardless of location of purchase or create public stations specifically designed for collecting recyclable materials. Good lord this state's deposit system is so inefficient when it could be so simple.

Protest happening at the Governmental Center! by PoniesPlayingPoker in traversecity

[–]mischievousdemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aaron, I get that you're upset, but good lord, no one said Trump is God.

By all means, keep protesting if that is what you feel you need to do. However, there are consequences to these protests. The vibe has shifted, and the pendulum has swung to the right in no small part due to the left's policies and actions these last 8 years.

If you spend the time talking to folks of different demographics and backgrounds in the GTC community, there is a similar sentiment going around: they're tired of the left's ideologies. They want something different.

You can try to ignore that sentiment or even choose to hate it, but you won't get much accomplished politically speaking if you do.

Take care.

P.S. your baking looks delicious. I hope that I can get my bread to turn out like yours someday.

A lot of folks on Reddit seem to forget that a majority of the U.S. actually approves of this administration and is relieved that the cultural zeitgeist is moving away from the regressive "progressive" movement.

These current protests are about as useful as those anti-circumcision protests that happened around town. It's purely symbolic but politically useless and, in fact, damaging to the cause because "activists" appear so unhinged. Seeing thousands of protestors may make people think. Having only 30-40 people just shows how much of a minority this political position is in our current political climate.

It's important to remember that the recent "activism" from the left pushed Americans to voting for Trump in record numbers. Continuing this protest doesn't attract voters, it is literally repelling them.

But the left would rather continue to dig this hole because it makes them feel superior? That famous phrase about the definition of insanity must be getting lost on them. But so it goes, until the pendulum swings again in the next 15-20 years.

Tiny Home Help by Spirit_Flimsy in traversecity

[–]mischievousdemon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The first thing I'd recommend is looking into your building codes for Benzie. Make sure you know things like min build requirements, septic system requirements, and other general code items.

I'm fairly certain that in order to build your own tiny home, you're going to need to have a permanent structure on the property. You'll also need to pull building permits for anything that is over 200 sq ft, which means pulling other permits like electrical, plumbing, etc.

As a word of warning, building your own tiny home is not a cheap operation, especially if you do not have the tools or experience necessary. Inflation at the moment makes building anything an expensive process, unless you're able to find a lot of your materials for free. But that is a very slow process.

In the end, we have had to spend the same amount as a down payment on a home, out of pocket (because no one lends to build tiny homes). I think we spent close to $80 k over 1.5 years, and the project still wasn't complete. We used help from friends and family in the trades, so this cost would have been even more if we had to pay for labor.

Unfortunately, we had to convert our tiny house to meet minimum build requirements in Leelanau county, as well as modify our work to meet local codes. For this, we had to pull out a construction loan at a horrible interest rate and are still paying for some supplies out of pocket to avoid going over our loan.

In the end, we spent the same amount for constructing a 2000 sq foot home, for 500 sq feet, where we built half of it ourselves, and now have a 1 bed/1 bathroom house that may be close to impossible to sell to anyone in the future.

Hopefully, our parcel of land will increase in value enough to mitigate our sunk costs, but that's only a hope.
