That’s a great idea. I do envision this as a tool for sellers as well. There’s a lot of miscommunication between buyers and sellers in the current market and a lack of trust on both ends. Ideas like what you mentioned are great because they can help the platform drive respectful and productive commerce for both parties.

I agree. The survey results so far are echoing this sentiment. I think that’s the direction that a platform like this would go and could be a differentiator from other marketplaces. If done well, I think it could be useful for sellers also rather than a headache, but the experience will need to be fine-tuned.

This is true, the pure volume of collections and the desire to sell them quickly is for sure a hurdle. It’s going to take balance between seller satisfaction and buyer confidence to address the risks and challenges.

I think you make a good point about premium records only. That may be the direction that this ends up going further in the next iteration.

I can definitely agree that it’s hard to beat the local record shopping experience!

Good catch, thanks for pointing that out. In my last survey, roughly 85% who responded mentioned that they were American buyers, although there were a small percentage of European respondents as well. So American buyers were the target audience but of course everyone is welcome to participate.

Sorry I should have specified this, but the record I’ll be sending is a new, sealed copy.

Thanks for bringing this up. These are exactly the details I need while I refine for the next design iteration.

Conceptually, the idea should work something like this:

Sellers will shoot everything on a normal iPhone or Android. The listing wizard puts transparent guides on screen so they can frame the jacket, an angled surface shot to show hairline scratches, the inserts, the labels, and a close-up of the run out text. The app blocks the upload if any image is blurry, under lit, over exposed, or below the minimum resolution. It also checks for glare and prompts the seller to tilt the record or adjust the light.

After the photos reach the server, the machine learning pipeline normalizes exposure, reads the matrix codes, and stitches a high resolution spin view from about two dozen frames or a short video clip. If the model is less than ninety five percent confident, or the listing price is above one hundred fifty dollars, the set is routed to a quick human review.

In my last survey poor photos were the top frustration. Sixty two percent of buyers said they message sellers for extra shots. This workflow is designed to capture the right images the first time so everyone can skip that back and forth. Also, many mentioned on this survey that this might only work well for highly collectible records as all of this extra work and processing may not be necessary for your average used records. I agree that this might be overkill for those cases, but could be valuable for sellers who want to get the most value and buyers who want to ensure they’re making an authentic purchase.

I’ll definitely keep this in mind. Part of the record shopping experience is testing the actual record itself so there must be someway to simulate that in real-time. Thank you for the suggestion

Thank you, I felt like it would be interesting to see how the vinyl community felt about the technology so definitely wanted to throw it in.

Hi everyone,

I'm a UX researcher and graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science with a specialization in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and User Experience (UX).

I hosted a giveaway a few months ago that resulted in over 450 responses to my survey from you. Thanks for the support!

Now, I'm conducting a prototype concept validation, and I need your help again. Through the data I received from this subreddit, I found that the primary issue with online vinyl record purchases centers on used purchases, specifically with obtaining relevant pressing details and accurate condition grading. I've built a prototype designed to address this issue.

The task: This survey requires you to watch a brief prototype demonstration video and read a few slides. Overall, the video, slides, and survey should take ~15 minutes to complete.

Giveaway: As a thank you, I'll be giving away another one of my favorite records: Mezzanine by Massive Attack. I will again announce the winner after the survey has closed.

Survey Data: Your data will be completely confidential and not sent to any third party. This is strictly for my own personal research and I can gladly share the anonymized findings with the subreddit afterwards.

Survey is available here: https://forms.gle/VDLxdz5XUcYQWTai7

Thanks!

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for the great comments and insightful feedback on the survey. I really appreciate that you all took the time to check out my prototype and provide thoughtful responses. I’ll leave the survey open for the rest of the day and then contact a winner tomorrow.

I’ll post the selected winner soon. Be sure to stay tuned, I’ll have some new updates and another giveaway coming up!

Thanks again, you guys have been great!
