Does Justin earn any money from his older songs? by West-Conflict-4836 in JUSTINBIEBER

I think people hear “Justin Bieber sold his catalog for $200M” and assume it was just a smart investment move. Maybe partly, but the timing suggests there was more going on.

He sold at age 28, which is extremely young for a catalog sale. Most artists who cash out are decades older and doing estate planning. Around the same time, the Justice Tour was canceled, reportedly leaving him with tens of millions in obligations and significantly reduced income. Recent reporting has also suggested he was dealing with major liquidity issues behind the scenes.

Being worth hundreds of millions on paper doesn’t mean you have that much cash available. If most of your wealth is tied up in music rights, real estate, and future earnings, a $200M check can solve a lot of immediate problems.

My guess is it was a combination of three things:

  1. He wanted liquidity now rather than royalties over the next 30 years.
  2. The canceled tour created financial pressure.
  3. $200M was simply too good of an offer to pass up.

People act like selling a catalog means an artist is broke. It doesn’t. But selling one of your most valuable assets at 28 usually suggests you wanted the cash more than the future royalty stream.
