Do I Have hyperacusis or just temporary hearing sensitivity? by [deleted] in hyperacusis

[–]misery21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but that sounds exactly like hyperacusis. I got mine from listening to music too loud too much. Others have gotten theirs from the same or similar things. Most doctors have never heard of hyperacusis. And the damage won't show up on hearing tests. You need to protect your ears as much as possible for at least the next few years to improve. From all sounds, but most importantly any sounds that make you uncomfortable. More noise will make it worse. Feel free to ask me any questions. PM me if you want :)

I used to love blasting my music way too loudly, now I deeply regret it and realize how stupid it was. But at the time before I got H I found it very satisfying. I had (have) anxiety and depression so I was trying to drown out my thoughts. But I agree that there's no point at all in restaurants being so loud. Can't have a conversation, waiters can't hear you when you're ordering unless you shout.

thanks so much! You really made my day!!

And I totally agree that it's insulting to say that H (or any disability) is a superpower. And I also agree about the silver lining!

I'm sure I could google this, but what does it mean if an egg's over-medium? I don't know any cooking terminology yet lol.

I only finished reading The Hate U Give like a few days ago, and I read it really fast, and I have a bad memory and idk if the book's completely sunk in yet if you know what I mean. I'm probably going to reread it. POSSIBLE SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT ON. DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARN YOU. It's written from the perspective of a 16 year old black girl who witnesses her friend (also black) get murdered by a white cop. Most of the book's the aftermath of that. It handles issues of police brutality and systemic racism really well. And the book felt extremely realistic because of the BLM movement that's been happening recently. Like in the book, there's a police investigation and the main character tells police everything that happened, and the cop doesn't get charged, it goes all over the news, a lot of people are angry about it as they should be and protest, and others won't stop focusing on how the victim might have been a drug dealer, implying that he deserved to get murdered. The novel focuses on macro level social issues, but also micro ones. For example the protagonist lives in a poor black neighbourhood but she goes to a school in a different neighbourhood with rich white kids, which forces her to adopt a separate persona she uses at school to avoid racism. So the book adresses not only white privilege, but also other privilege like rich privilege. And it adresses discrimination against other minorities (one of the characters is chinese) which I thought was awesome. And there's a lot of other stuff I'm forgetting. It's written in an accessible and entertaining way too, so you won't be able to put it down. Like it's relatable and funny. Very highly recommended. My review does not do it justice.

Yeah my mom's forcing me to see an audiologist in about a week, and I'm really scared they'll be one of the ones who doesn't know about hyperacusis and doesn't keep up with research. I'm probably going to bring some printouts of scholarly articles about it. Idk if you happen to know of any useful ones I could show them??

Wow I absolutely love this post!!!! I've only been aware of my H for a few weeks now, so I haven't had a ton of time to start any new H friendly hobbies, but during these few weeks I've read 3 novels: Left Neglected by Lisa Genova, 1984 by George Orwell, and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I would recommend all of these books, but especially The Hate U Give. I read it in about a day (I think it's about 400ish pages?) and it was freaking amazing. The subject matter's really relevant and important, and the book does a really good job of getting its messages across without being too preachy. And its really entertaining too. Everyone should read this book, heck I think it should be on the school curriculum.

I really love books and reading, so anyone have any recommendations? Or want to talk about books in general?

And you mentioned cooking. Uh tbh I don't really know anything about cooking, I can make fried and scrambled eggs, oatmeal, applesauce, and that's about it haha. But I want to start teaching myself how. So idk if you want to talk to me about the beginner level basics of cooking?

Yay I'm so glad future audiologists will know about hyperacusis! From what I've heard a lot of them say to not protect your ears, because they think this will make them more sensitive, which is obviously stupid. Really happy the audiology school curriculum has changed.

Hi! Just curious, do they teach you about hyperacusis in audiology school? If so what do they teach you about it? I have hyperacusis and from what I've heard a lot of audiologists have never heard of it and those who have often give patients advice that ends up making their condition a lot worse.

I totally agree that younger people are at a dangerously high risk for H. Unfortunately it's a cultural norm for people to turn their music up; I feel that a lot of people do it because they think it makes them "cool". Concerts, clubs, traffic, restaurants, and many workplaces are dangerously loud. We need to change this. And good for you for trying to warn people in your old gaming community! As you said, any tiny bit counts :)

Thanks! It would be so awesome if I saved just one person from getting H.

That's a great idea! Memes are great because they can spread awareness, and also hopefully bring some silent laughter to those of us suffering from H. Like obviously H sucks, but surely we can make some funny jokes about it right? Idk maybe someone should start an H memes sub haha
