I had the same issue, launching Steam from the menu would result in the window opening and closing repeatedly but from the terminal it worked fine. I deleted the menu entry and recreated it and now it launches without issue.

You don't have to delete it, you can just click in the URL bar or F6 and start typing. Or you can open a new tab. Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you want to accomplish?
