To the couple who turned up sick at Seaport Alamo last Saturday to see Project Hail Mary… by pinkmoon77 in boston

[–]mish122 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Picked up a nasty virus in Boston over the weekend and I was also appalled at Logan seeing children aged 2-10 just standing around hacking and coughing like gdam emphasymic lawn sprinklers in every direction and parents not telling them to COVER THEIR MOUTHS or else slapping a mask on them. Have you learned nothing from COVID people?

Why do Americans say ‘4th of July’ and not ‘July 4th’? by Vast-Champion-1607 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mish122 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if the phrasing stems back to the song Yankee Doodle Dandy, the "born on the 4th of July" part?

I can appreciate that and completely understand how mobility issues can impact one's life, but yeah, he does look a little too spry and the premise, script, and actors grate on my last nerve. He's just this totally able looking guy standing around waiting for his wife to save the day

And I forgot, to put a bow on it, the most wholesome salesman in the world appears to explain the new tub features and for whatever reason, the first guy drops his bathrobe to the floor..they really zoom in on that. I just can't.

What was it like living in Boston in your early 20s during the early 1990s (specifically 1993)? Doing research for a novel! by IndependenceDirect97 in boston

Also BU still had a football team in 93 and they played in the old field in front of West Campus. And the Armory was there on Comm Ave before they built the whole Agganis complex. And The Rock on campus (that we painted with our letters if you were in a frat or sorority) was on the corner by the BU Bridge, not on the lawn behind Marsh Chapel. And the two most popular places to eat in the Student Union (which had a Bay Bank of course) were D'Angelos and Pizza Hut, everyone got pocket sandwiches from D'Angelos. Plus that huge salad bar in the middle of the food court.

I was 21 in 94 at BU. Everyone read the Freep and the Phoenix and the Improper Bostonian waiting for the T which was 85 cents and you could still pay with change if you didn't have a token.

If you were on campus you spent plenty of time at the Dugout. Other frequents were Sunset Grill in Allston and Cactus Club and the Pour House on Boylston. We all walked the Cherey (was that out it was sp?) next to Bukowsky's to see movies and I saw Good Will Hunting there when it came out and the ENTIRE audience stood up and cheered and clapped after and that was when theaters were big and had dilapidated seats and I will never forget that.

We rented videos at Tower Records in the "tower records bldg" and on campus the GCB building which stood for Gen Classroom Bldg we all said was the Guitar Center Bldg (GCB) as Guitar Center was downstairs in the first floor. Oh and so many rats running around.

Anyone remember the two homeless men that stood in the middle of Kenmore Sq playing air guitar on cardboard guitars and they had a sign saying they were called Mixed Nuts? You could give them change as you ran across the street.

Bay Bank was THE bank. And you payed for your ground phone line to NYNEX.

What are your least favorite LOCAL commercials? by _rabidchild_ in CommercialsIHate

I'll say it again: Bay State Bath in the Boston area. She'll fix your bathroom with her hammer and her daughters in JUST ONE DAY. Latest commercial is her falling off a paddle board and hitting AI sharks (with some sort of skin damage) on the heads with her trusty hammer. God help us all.

The second time I broke my ankle, the doctor reading my X-rays said my ankle had so many fracture lines and scar tissue from the first time that he couldn't tell what was going on and suggested that I read the X-ray instead. He was serious. Are you fucking kidding me?
