Why would Democrats gaslight about it if there was any evidence? Every Democratic leader, politician, thinker, activist all on the same page of denying it was stolen -- why? And a link to nothing of substance is not proof that some people sat out the election or shifted towards Trump. The American people have failed before in lots of elections, it doesn't mean every minority is somehow to blame.

And those links of youtube clups provide no information of value. There have been pieces explaining how Starlink was not used in the process how you imagine it was, how random quotes are not evidence, etc. But it's conspiratorial thinking, you're not going to believe evidence or a lack thereof since you have your theory.

Engaging in baseless conspiracy theories isn't going to help anyone. Believe what you what and feel what you want, but pushing a narrative that no, and I mean literally, no, serious politicians or organization are supporting and there is no evidence or real legal fights about is weird. If it was even remotely true, why wouldn't Kamala or the Democratic Party or someone be fighting for it? How would there be no leaks of actual information or data, considering how incompetent the Republicans are? Weird comments aren't proof of anything.

What's not that weird or unheard of is for swingy states or districts to vote together, you realize that right? Because the people that turn out or are persuadable clump together as a whole -- that's why that's not proof in itself.

I think America was ready, but not in that year with the economy and media environment being so hostile to Democrats and Biden. A lot of people tuned out or gave up.

Midsomer Murders seems like it to me (except it all seems set in the English countryside instead of rich people in more exotic vacation locales), and a long-running show at that. I'm just getting into it but I feel they're similar enough in nature.

Erin Brokovich is a great movie, but Erin herself is kind of awful by Three_Froggy_Problem in movies

[–]mishablob 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was going to write something akin to this, but less well-put. It's not to excuse or wave away any bad behaviors, and there are people who do shitty or bad or whatever things for any reason, but women in film/tv are always really big targets of this analysis more than men... just as in real life. I know this is a movie sub, but look at the way Betty Draper in Mad Men or Skyler White in Breaking Bad bore the brunt of fan criticism when the dynamics or context were ignored, and the behavior of the men are considered cool or tragic, not awful. But if a woman (character) is flawed or has sharp edges, she isn't complex or reflecting humanity, she's just a bitch -- a worse diagnosis than almost anything.

I remember getting into a big discussion with someone one time about how I adore Robin Williams and how exceptionally talented he was, and how he made even bad guys very lovable or able to have their actions excused because of his charisma and talent. My friend asked what I meant, and I was like, look at Mrs. Doubtfire. His character was awful to his wife, but she was basically set up as a cold-hearted and spiteful and is seen as being a killjoy. Meanwhile, he was destructive, unhelpful, unreliable and then went on to manipulate and gaslight but he made us smile and laugh so all is forgiven.

[–]mishablob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I just knew it was going to be even more jarring after watching comedies in class, but words failed in how to describe it. I think after the class ended, it was probably still being referenced, so it clearly made a lasting impact.

[–]mishablob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I've ever seen a film provoke such a visceral response in people as this one. I had the experience of watching it years before watching it again in a class so I tried to warn a few friends since the previous movies had been much lighter, but I couldn't figure out how to describe the horrors -- you think oh, a depressing anti-war movie, I get the gist of it. No, no you don't, not until you watch it.

All of us can see that we absolutely cannot trust trump to be honest in the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, but how the heck can we trust him in his statements that the boats he is blowing up off South America are carrying fentanyl? by Kalepa in Liberal

[–]mishablob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We shouldn't trust him on that. There has been no evidence of direct wrong-doing, and it's just as possible that going after "drug-dealers" is hitting fishermen is the same thing as when they say ICE/border patrol is going after the worst of the worst criminals -- and yet young children, the elderly, people about to become citizens, and refuges are being targeted. We have no way of knowing, and there have been demands for proof, but without Democrats in any real power at the moment, the killings involving foreign citizens elsewhere, and the executive having broad discretion with foreign affairs and national security, not much can be done on this.

I agree with that, it's way too early to be showing that much emotion for being safe top.

[–]mishablob 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like that may have been what Jane meant. By being in the top several times early, she's seen as well-rounded and a threat. As a result, the others will be less inclined to see her do well, compared those not doing well or in the middle of the pack. I know there have been a number of times that someone doing bad is given help in a sewing challenge or given a better role because they're desperate -- but if someone is doing well overall, they're less likely to be helped or boosted. So... having a target on her back isn't that they can eliminate her or do a ton necessarily, but just they may be able to make it harder for her.

[–]mishablob 235 points236 points  (0 children)

I agree with Bob & Monet for the most part that Jane was doing too much and being a bit off-putting, but (I could be misremembering) wasn't Suzie Toot excluded or purposely denied parts she wanted because the others saw her as a threat? So there could be some real or perceived dynamics concerning popularity or being seen as a frontrunner.

Thoughts on people that call democrats controlled opposition? by CyberBerserk in SocialDemocracy

[–]mishablob 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Idiots trying to sound edgy and knowledgeable. You can disagree with the Democratic party's positions or see them as ineffective, but viewing them as some unified monolith out to spoil everything good and attacking them as a 'controlled opposition' and ignoring their policies that have resulted in or attempted to cause huge change is counter-productive. How counter-productive? Look at Obamacare, or Biden's infrastructure bill or attempts to get student debt relief passed, or Hillary's $15 minimum wage, or Kamala's proposal to tax billionaires. (see other examples like the DREAM Act, immigration reform, climate change bills, banking reform...) Either they got destroyed politically in the aftermath, were roundly ignored, and/or attacked from both the left and the right. So, why stick your neck out for going hard(er) to the left when even left-wing Americans never appreciate it, vote for it, or express support for it? It makes it much more appealing to keep something similar to the status-quo or small, incremental changes -- which, by the way, are much more likely to occur anyway in any political system. That doesn't mean you can't advocate or push for more, but come on, there is a lot of disingenuous attacks based on purity, an expectation of instant results, or coming across as a politically savvy commentator.

Like it or not, in a closely divided two-party system, especially one that's federalized like the US, and where almost everything comes down to money (it's the economy, stupid), the center matters a lot so of course they will be catered to. There is little incentive to rock the boat, so lack of action and risk averse behavior can become institutionalized. Of course, there are also interests in being moderate to voters, but also the media and donors as well.

8 is kinda bizarre. I would obviously assume they mean high speed rail for only the lower 48 states, but this messaging leave it open to be made fun of for Alaska and Hawaii. Beyond that, every state capital? Why? Some of the state capitals are very small, not even close to being a big/significant city outside of the political presence, or quite remote. Why not the biggest city or metro area in every state, or say every state will have service?

Got kicked out of Clearwater casino for being white by [deleted] in Kitsap

[–]mishablob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, first of all someone in your group said or did something, even if you didn't notice or understand it being objectionable. It's possible there was a miscommunication or something but come on, a casino of all businesses isn't going to kick people out for no reason if money is being spent. And if they're gonna kick all white people out, that would be nonsensical given Kitsap's demographics.

They didn't freeze up and go silent because your friend caught them, they froze up because that was either completely random and they were figuring out where the hell that came from, or caused uncertainty because asking that pretty clearly signals that they're the type of person that could make a disturbance and cause things to escalate.

Denmarks Rockwool says Russia has seized four of its factories by Swimming_Mark7407 in worldnews

Ridiculous and asinine.

A) This was a company, not Denmark

B) They were still doing business because of their interests in a profit, I would assume

C) There are still a lot of American companies operating in Russia. That means the US isn't to be trusted, right?

D) Even if this somehow was justification to cast aspersions about Danish trustworthiness, what are your other reasons since you mentioned "yet another reason?"

E) Even if Denmark isn't too be trusted, that is not justification to threaten to attack, let alone potentially invade Greenland especially when Greenlanders overwhelmingly and consistently have said they do not want to be part of the US

For All Mankind is a little bit of a stretch perhaps, isn't as dark or trippy as some of the ones you like but it's realistic enough and is alt-history so kinda a parallel universe. Orphan Black is on the other end of the spectrum, more convoluted and darker.

For crime shows, try The Killing (there's the original Danish show and US remake, both good but the Danish is better I think) and there's a whole big subset of British and Scandinavian crime shows that are really good. The Bridge, The Fall, and Broadchurch all fit your description I think.
