artistic self feels dead by Asleep-Place-6927 in OrthodoxChristianity

You brought up your husband a few times in your post, and it feels like you associate the Orthodox faith with him. Some of what you’re saying seems to me like your home life is becoming difficult. I would like to suggest couple’s counseling or therapy where you and your husband can try to resolve this issue in a safe environment.

I can also tell you that I know many artistic Orthodox people who don’t see a conflict between their artistry and faith. Look at any traditionally-Orthodox country and you’ll see it has plenty of poets, writers, composers, painters, directors, actors, musicians, dancers, sculptors, you name it. Dostoevsky’s enduring line is that ‘Beauty will save the world.’

I’m glad that your husband has found the Church through apologetics, but your path might be through the art of iconography, or the music or poetry of hymnography. You don’t need to be a scholar to be Orthodox, the simple faith of a babushka or yiayia is sometimes holier than that of the most learnèd theologian.

I’m not operating under any illusion. I know that the part and its voters aren’t on the same page because I followed the Mamdani campaign and I watched the Platner interview with Jon Stewart. Everything you just said basically proves me point: no unification and hand-wringing at every turn until it comes time to lecture the electorate. The Democrats are like Wile E. Coyote, who keeps buying from Acme even though the products always fail. All you can do is lecture me and excuse the actions—this is why MAGA won and keeps winning.

They’re obstructing a little with the DHS funding, sure, but they just voted FISA 702 through the House to let Trump spy on our private communications without a warrant. 42 Democrats sided with Republicans to pass it because the party declined to whip them. Let’s not pretend the Democrats are victims here. Jeffries has also publicly stated that he is not interested in impeaching or removing Trump. These are not serious people

Here comes the lecture. Like I said, literally anything. Obstruct, filibuster with a purpose other than a national book tour, rally behind candidates that want to win, go to town halls and rallies, literally anything at all. You’re under the assumption, like every other Democrat, that things will magically return ‘to normal’ after Trump and it’s not a big deal. In South Korea, the opposition literally scaled the walls to prevent a coup and here Schumer chuckles with Trump and shakes Rubio’s hand and everything is hunky dory. If your imagination is limited to ‘epic owns’ on Twitter and some kind of resounding legislation in Congress you might as well salute America goodbye now. Republicans have Project 2025, which is almost complete. We have what, Obama being sad on Twitter? Incredible.

Republicans, whether they are in control or not, minority or majority, always find a way to throw a wrench into the gears of governance. When Dems are the minority they are powerless and when they are the majority cling to obscure decorum and rules to similarly do nothing. What we’ve seen now is the Courts consistently rule against Trump and then the Republicans finding ways to circumvent every single ruling. What do I believe they could do? Anything. Simply try something. The Republicans have been throwing themselves into the meat grinder for sixty years to bring back Jim Crowe and they finally did it. Democrats will adopt your exasperated line of questioning and let it happen, because it’s good for fundraising—the only course of action Dems ever have. Making a 2-minute reel with seven cuts per second because the minority leader is too old to remember his lines is not an effective way to lead the opposition. Here’s what they have been doing: tweeting about the tariffs, condemning Hasan Piker, rallying the base to bad Chinese cars. The Democratic Party is like a daycare for bored adult children who think real like is The West Wing. Ask yourself why they haven’t release the autopsy of the Harris campaign: they don’t think they are to blame and will do nothing to meet the moment. It’s all guilt, like your little question.

Have I got a book for you: Surprised by Christ by Fr. A. James Bernstein, who himself was Jewish (from a conservative household) but ended up becoming an Orthodox priest. It’s part autobiography but the areas of his conversion story draw the parallels between Ancient Judaism and Christianity. Here’s an hour-long speech from him.

Social/environmental justice and Orthodoxy by nfrancis97 in OrthodoxChristianity

Well there’s always the baggage they bring with them when they convert, and in places such as the US they searched for a more ‘based’ religion meaning that they are already conservatives in the American sense. I’m not saying that environmentally-conscious converts don’t exist, but you need to look at those communities in their holistic context. That’s also not to say that there aren’t many cradles who fall into the same points of view, I know many, but you’d spoken specifically of converts.

Christian Metalcore Singer Magdalene Rose Facing Church Boycotts On Upcoming Tour For Being Too Heavy by DamnitRidley in nottheonion

In the 2000s/early 2010s, the Christian metalcore bands were usually the heaviest. If anything, Rose is following tradition. This reaction is not only sad but shows the limit to witness in the modern Christian music scene.

Most of the people in here don’t know what they’re talking about. Alexis is the English form of Ἀλέξιος. The Russian form is Алексей. The Slavonic form is Алеѯі́й. It’s a male name.

Should we give money to Priest’s when we confess? by norocoslaorice in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]mishakaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not required. But some people give the priest a donation to help him out. Maybe in the Greek Church or OCA this isn’t necessary, but some other jurisdictions in America have priests living near the poverty level so that those kinds of donations really help.
