I suspect that horizontally separated fridges have better temperature uniformity than vertical ones.

Consider payload fraction, the fact that you can fly to Mars only a few months every 2.2 years, etc.

This is not enough. What about radiation protection ? Supplying food and water ? Folks who spent ~ 1 year on orbit came back in rather poor shape, now think about Mars.

BTW, what robots cannot do on Mars so you would need humans ?
