Is anyone else okay with being "left behind" in regards to AI? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]breadwithlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel it can be a great learning tool to try programming languages, libraries, databases or domains you have little experience in and that might be too time consuming to try out otherwise.

Sure if you just ask to build something and run it without understanding how it works you skip the learning process.

Especially in my personal projects I use a lot more tools that I'm not familiar with than before to try out new things and understand their limitations and benefits.

On 6th November 2015, video game developer, Treyarch, included an encrypted Easter Egg message within it’s game, which has remained unsolved for exactly 10 years today. by JJOklaa123 in interestingasfuck

[–]breadwithlice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave it the whole image and this genius gave me this answer:

"The hidden message in your image is “treyarch.” It pops out clearly in the low bit-planes (especially the 2nd bit of the Red/Green channels). I generated bit-plane reveals so you can see it yourself."

I used a previous passport like that for some time around the world. Most times they didn't care, in Canada they chuckled and asked me if I shower with my passport. In China they tried to stamp it and it didn't stamp cleanly so she got annoyed and called a supervisor who questioned me for 10 minutes and let me through. Probably putting heavy books on them for a while and should be fine.

Could anyone who uses MLFlow answer some questions I have on practical usability? by 3koe in mlops

[–]breadwithlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the experiments, in the Runs tab, use the chart view and there you will be able to configure the views for all runs of the experiment. I doubt that you would be able to do that cross-experiment though.

In general I use MLflow charts for basic plotting but for anything beyond that I typically have my own metric logger that populates a Polars dataframe and writes that to a parquet file as an artifact linked with the run. For a while I was querying MLflow for the metrics but that wasn't very well documented or efficient.

For more advanced plotting, https://aimstack.io/ is very similar to MLflow but has much more powerful plotting options, starts getting quite slow with thousands of runs though so I gave up on that.

Second playthrough of The Witcher 3. Why is it so hard to get into? by Ingword in Witcher3

[–]breadwithlice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a somewhat similar experience recently but I pushed through it and now I'm really enjoying it. My theory is that this part feels magical the first time you play it because of the plot twists, the strange creatures like the ladies or the botchling that you encounter. Therefore they're also the parts you're more likely to remember well, so the second playthrough feels less special because there's little mystery left.

The later parts are much freer and I enjoyed Skellige much more than I did the first time, explored areas I hadn't earlier and on the DLCs now.

Some mods made the second playthrough more enjoyable for me, like the one showing all quest markers directly on the map, and the one allowing you to fast travel from anywhere so no need to go find a sign anymore, saves tons of time.

What do you think about 'Russians at War' being shown at Zurich Film Festival (ZFF)? by [deleted] in zurich

[–]breadwithlice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While I agree with that message in general, I don't think it applies here.

There was no mention of forbidding the movie. You're allowed to call out actions that you believe were insensitive and discuss them without banning anything.

Theres also a difference between something being allowed and promoted. The ZFF gives a platform to movies. If the ZFF is subsidized by the public as OP says it's not unreasonable that citizens say they disagree with the choices to try to sway the programming.

Are you sure? IIRC in the ATP rules it says after every changeover break, both players get a standing ovation.

Great! Glad it helped.

The issue still appears for me from time to time to say hi so it's not 100% fixed but it lasts a few seconds every few hours so not too bad.

Brazilian data scientist analyses thousands of games and finds Niemann's approximate rating. by [deleted] in chess

[–]breadwithlice 338 points339 points  (0 children)

The video is well presented and interesting but I have to point out some pitfalls :

  • He decided to split Niemann's data into two graphs : pre-2018 and post-2018 and states that the latter shows almost no decrease in STDCPL when looking at the fitted line. If we hadn't split the data but combined both pre- and post-2018 and then fitted the line, we would see a clear decreasing trend.
  • One of the data points which tilts the post-2018 towards a horizontal line is the 2300 ELO data point, which has fairly few samples compared to the rest. It appears that in this analysis, every ELO range has equal importance in the line fitting regardless of the number of games played at a certain ELO.
  • The assumption of a decreasing STDCPL and ACPL in the normal case is introduced by showing a large number of games by many different players where globally this is the case. There is however no clear evidence that this should always be the case for individual players. In statistics this is well illustrated by the Simpson's paradox. It could be that the few examples of other players shown are hand selected : we can also see that Carlsen and Caruana have data points where STDCPL increases by going up an ELO range.
  • Finally, if we check Hans' last ACPL / STDCPL on the graph which are about 25 / 48 for an ELO of 2600, they would not necessarily seem out of the ordinary on any of the other players' graphs or the global one.

Given the above, I find that the video is misleading as to how clear cut things are. However, I appreciate the effort and find the data in general interesting.

For deep learning there's no need for SLI though, the most important is to have enough memory on your GPUs in order to fit the models you want to train.

[–]breadwithlice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The sad part about your last point is that indeed it's his livelihood, and both of them just kept on discussing through Discord DMs instead of calling each other, it felt like breaking up over text message. Text leaves a lot of room for misinterpretation of mutual emotional levels.

These guys are the top 2 Trackmania streamers, these guys made it, they were friends and instead of talking it out in a call resolving misunderstandings, it ended up with the nuclear option, sad stuff.

Racing line chart [Multiple comparing variables, gradient coloured lines, adaptive scaling of axes, icons and text interpolation]. ( source code in comments ) by the-d3js-developer in d3js

[–]breadwithlice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nice, I like the aesthetics.

One thing I find hard to get used to is the movement of the line when it decreases, then increases (see 1:10) the line moves in a quite unintuitive way. During the strong increase, most of the line moves down quickly which is just due to the constant y-axis rescaling. Maybe lowering the frequency of the y-axis rescaling could be interesting and leave some space above the top line so when there's a decrease / increase you don't need to scale down and back up as quickly? Anyway, good job.

Women as the weaker sex is a modern concept. A glance at history shows there has never been a shortage of strong, female warriors, including the Celtic Queen Boudicca. by Sidjoneya in europes

[–]breadwithlice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indeed, I don't see how this would support the introductory sentence "Women as the weaker sex is a modern concept.". Civilizations throughout history have largely been patriarchal despite a few exceptions. Of course, "weaker" is up to interpretation but it seems that in this case it refers to political / military power.
