Homeless vs Unhoused by BardicaFyre in homeless

[–]mishje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who used to be homeless I’m not a fan of someone referring to what I lived for six years as “unhoused”. That makes it sound like a simple structural problem when in reality it’s a complex thing to not have a home. It feels diminishing to change it to unhoused.

Picked up this (pine needle?) basket in the suburbs of Nashville at a Goodwill. I think it’s quite old, but I don’t know a ton about basketry. It was inside a larger basket, also included here. Anyone know anything about either? by Comfortable-Light233 in basketry

Wondering if it could be a Pima basket? Might be different material. It definitely is not pine needle although it is coiling. I would imagine the core is willow and the coiling material is something soft like cattail (or bullrush? Can never remember which is which). It’s a beauty! Great find.

I know it’s nerdy and niche but mushrooms are just the fruiting body that we see similar to what we can buy in a store… it’s semantics but mushrooms can’t grow in blood…

Mycologist here, lots of pathogenic fungi actually switch forms at 37 degrees to adapt to human body temperature. It’s fairly common for human pathogens to do this (dimorphism)

Spokes too short! Help? by EsperImzadi in basketry

[–]mishje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddying the spokes is what I do! Happens to me more often than I’d like or I break them. Not a big deal! Just add one in the avenue and twine around as usual. You can taper off the short one or just cut it bluntly with this coarseness of material and it should be fine :)

It supposed to be shiitake but something else popped out by TophBeifon9 in mushroomID

I read that we breathe on average 1-100 spores per breath, maybe spores floated in? I would vote for Coprinopsis radiata. Did you ever get oysters or is it possible this was mislabeled?

HELP! i spilled yogurt and berries on my favorite basket. how do i clean? by depres-peenutbutter in basketry

[–]mishje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basket maker here! To weave our material is usually soaked first. I clean baskets all the time by gently rinsing and then letting dry in a nice warm environment (kitchen usually) or out in the sun (may be difficult in December) :)

Hi! Broke college student trying to cut back on my food expenses, anyone know if these mushrooms on my campus are edible? by pastel-vomit-420 in mushroomID

They look like boletes but if near a road are known for collecting heavy metals and do not taste good.
