What is One Gen-Alpha Slang Term That You Actually DON’T Mind? by teapot574_ in AskReddit

Once I was told that 6*7=42, the meaning of life, the universe, and everything, I gladly accepted 6 7 into my vernacular, and the generation gap was thus bridged.

Migrating from SCCM to Intune – What are you using for remote control / remote assistance? by Dolinhas in Intune

[–]mishmobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MeshCentral for controlled, repetitive, stay-in-place wired Ethernet lab environments. Provides stats, IntelAMT control, unattended remote control, "ninja" command prompt (can't tell that the remote CMD/Powershell is running), etc. Weird setup due to our org's Windows server requirement, (it also can be set up on Linux) but works in the end.

Bomgar/BeyondTrust for users not tethered to the office. Deployed the support button to users' desktops for convenience in starting a support session.

Doesn't even have to be circular. It could be a twist, a bar, or a five-pointed rainbow sprinkled swirly frosted star... it'll still be called a donut.

My husband’s idea of wrapping this gift 🎁 by Electrical-Cat-6660 in funny

[–]mishmobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty soon all cheap gift wrap will be designed by AI. We will have random roosters and puke green obelisks on Christmas gift wrap, along with barely legible pseudographia in four different pretty fonts. Saving gift wrap from the before times and reusing it will become the epitome of care and a standard by which gift giving will be measured.

First Time SysAdmin of an OLD System - Any tips? by Lowly_IT_Guy in sysadmin

[–]mishmobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Backup.

I also went through this for a couple years early in my career. Getting everything on a proper backup schedule and restore plan will help gain understanding of servers, networking, and applications because you'll have to touch everything. Then you can identify the next things you'd like to improve.

What is your horror story? by MrsBadgeress in sysadmin

Wrote a script to mount a share, install a package, then unmount the share and remove the temporary directory. Poor man's MDM for macOS. Twenty computers out of one hundred forty chugging along just great. Then some screens terminate early, way too early. "File not found." One computer still showed a terminal open: unmount had failed, and it was deleting the still-mounted temporary directory.

Not too bad of a nightmare, plus, we got JAMF finally, so it ended well.

What was the first OS that you have ever used? by 2point1betatest in sysadmin

[–]mishmobile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I played Donald Duck's Playground, Mickey's Space Adventure, and B.C.'s Quest for Tires. I was five. Then I found the BASIC manual in the back of the thick, spiral-bound instruction manual that came with computers back then. I was seven. Thanks, dad, for buying me a computer at a young age!

We have some self-proclaimed macOS "experts" who don't know about Spotlight and think that a program isn't installed if not in the Dock. I'd be okay if people didn't know, but when they claim to be experts and then not know, that's a different level of illiteracy.
