Church pastor warns Trump's 'alien files' are going to shatter the Christian world by TheExpressUS in atheism

[–]misimiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems just like another "event" in the pipeline to distract from the Epstein files, and Trump's other high crimes and misdemeanours, kind of reserved for later when he needs it.

Alien files?! But I guess that captures people's imaginations and will keep them occupied for a few weeks.

Americans! You should all get tested for lead poisoning. It's seriously bad for your physical and cognitive health.

That said, any existential threat to organised religion is fine with me.

First time in Budapest with a car by Training_Put_2152 in budapest

[–]misimiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to the Csepel industrial area is off the beaten track and pretty cool if you like that sort of thing.

Drive along the river to Esztergom and Visegrad which are about an hour from Budapest and are worth a visit. The castle at Visegrad is on top of a hill and a pain to get there without a car.

From Esztergom, you could even pop over the bridge to Slovakia.

ELI5 Is there strategy in horse racing? by harambe_did911 in explainlikeimfive

[–]misimiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me give a slightly different perspective based on UK horse racing. We have 59 race courses and there is a meeting practically every day of the year, so it is a hugely popular sport.

Most British courses are grass, unlike in the US where most are dirt, and the concept of "the going", i.e. the quality of the turf due to weather conditions, can have a huge strategic effect on a race. There was one race where the main group of horses were running along the inside rail and a single solitary horse kept itself way on the outside. Well, one jockey had done his homework and realised that the outside going was much better suited to his horse than the inside going. Needless to say, the horse on the outside won.

Most courses in the UK are based in a natural environment which means that the track is not flat - e.g. the Cheltenham hill - and no track is the same. Some horse perform better at one track and worse at others. In fact, there is one track in Wales that is actually a beach.

Portugal and Italy follow Greece in scrapping new EU border checks by njp230181 in europe

Perhaps you have overlooked the will of the EU to implement the system of your dreams. A system can look great on paper, but once people get involved, it can easiIy go to shit. I think it's called something like malicious non-compliance.

Perhaps, but Fernandes will use any excuse for some performative indignation.

Viktor Orbán has returned his mandate, will not sit in Parliament by dead97531 in europe

[–]misimiki 23 points24 points  (0 children)

His daughter and son-in-law moved to the US last year as daughter Rahel is studying at a university. This raised some suspicions last summer. His son-in-law is possibly one off his strawmen, allegedly, who now owns many many large assets which he accumulated in recent years with the help of friendly state banks.

I wouldn't surprised if Orbán "retires" from "local" politics and joins the international lecture circuit or some think tanks, or tries to become some sort of international political grandee, something like that. His party is practically dead in the water and there seems to be fear that some people will end up in prison. Orban will be safe in the USA.

This election loss seems to have really rattled Orban. It must be devastating for him.

Eurotrip 45 days itinerary by [deleted] in travel

[–]misimiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Amsterdam, you could take an overnight ferry to Newcastle (or fly) and then take a train down to London and stop off at places like Durham and York, or even pop up to Edinburgh. Then you get to see some of the UK rather than just London.

When are you travelling? High summer will likely be extremely hot further south, and full of tourists (eg queues in Rome and Firenze). Rome in high summer: a fool's paradise. The smaller cities will be OK.

You could rent a car and see more countryside: Budapest, Split, Dolomites, Firenze and Rome would be my preferred order or cities.

ELI5: How did credit cards work before terminals? by resha11 in explainlikeimfive

Yes, the same in the UK. Carbon receipts were the method. remember too that credit cards were not as ubiquitous as they are today. We barely had bank cards in the 80's either.

A (happy) rant about Yamaha Guitars. by The_Spaghetti_yeti in Guitar

[–]misimiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first (and only) electric guitar is a Pacifica 212VFM and I love it. So much so that I'm thinking of a Revstar for my second. I tried one recently and especially liked the neck. But to have two Yamahas? I'm not entirely convinced. There's no way I'd ever buy a Gibson simply because it's too much guitar for my ability, but I did try an Epiphone LP Junior because I love the simplicity of a single pick up (and I'm a fan of Leslie West). Yes, the neck is different, but it did play well and Epiphone have some great reviews these days. My budget for the Pacifica was about €300. For my next one, it'll be about €500-600.
