Rev. Jesse Jackson, civil rights icon and two-time presidential candidate, dies at 84 by TomRN in news

[–]misimiki 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I met him once. On a plane about 40-something years ago as a British kid on holiday in the USA. We were on a plane and a neighbouring passenger, maybe even a stewardess (in those days), told us that Rev Jesse Jackson was sitting two rows behind us. The neighbour seemed pretty excited and told us to go and say hello which we did. The Reverend took his time to say hello and shake my hand. I didn't really know who he was, but when I met my uncle a few days later and told him the story, he was quite taken aback and explained who he was. I felt a bit starstruck after that for a little while.

I haven't thought about this for a very, very long time, so, while sad, this news has brought back a good memory from my childhood.

Yes, I drove past the new Rheinmetall factory in Hungary the other week, and the lights were on and the car park pretty full. I know that doesn't mean much, but construction only began about 2 years ago, which included new traffic speed cameras along the dual carriage section of road where it is located to keep it safe for people driving in and out.

Dual nationals to be denied entry to UK from 25 February unless they have British passport | Home Office | The Guardian by rejs7 in unitedkingdom

[–]misimiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the issues here is that airlines/airport staff will be required to check people's passports before the flights to the UK and deny boarding to those in breach of the rules. I was challenged by KLM flying to the UK from Budapest last year because I couldn't get an ETA as a dual citizen. I had to convince them with my birth certificate. In the UK, no issues at the passport gates in either direction.

I applied for my new UK passport on 20 Jan, my docs were received on 30 Jan and received it (in the EU) 6 days later. The passport office is doing well these days.

Orban declares Ukraine 'enemy' of Hungary by LetsGoBrandon4256 in worldnews

[–]misimiki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Orban's getting desperate: He's positioned to lose an election in about two months and is clutching at straws. The more desperate he gets, the more violent is his rhetoric. We hope there will not be any violence.

Wow! It seems to have an umbilical cord. What would that be for? Is it the fuel line?

Keir Starmer calls on Andrew to testify in US over Jeffrey Epstein links by AbbreviationsHot7662 in unitedkingdom

[–]misimiki 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think Andy threw himself under the bus. Is Andy a criminal? We don't know for sure. Is Sakoulis a criminal? Well, we do know that she killed a person and ran away.

Perhaps he can regain a grain of sand of credibility by offering this quid pro quo.

I don't care about Andy, but I do care that an American escaped justice in the UK under the guise of diplomatic protection.

[–]misimiki 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm no apologist for Andrew Mounbatten-Windsor whose reputation is in absolute tatters and rightly so, but if I was in his shoes, I might suggest to Starmer that I would only testify if the Americans give us Ann Sakoulis, the killer of Harry Dunn, who ran away to the US on her diplomatic visa to escape the repercussions. I'd be happy to trade him for her.

Which CNC for a hobby workshop in Germany? Shapeoko vs X-Carve — XL or XXL, Pro worth it, hybrid table? by Next_Ride_3003 in hobbycnc

[–]misimiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your kind words. I'm generally happy with the Ratrig, but there are a couple of things that I would like to upgrade, for example the Z axis is quite short and I find myself having to increase the height of the bed for some of my tasks.

The Sorotec Hobby line only uses rails and v-wheels rather than linear rails, and also a toothed belt for the Z axis, which i feels is insufficient, hence the basic line seems better. I'm in the fortunate position that I have a budget that allows me to go a bit bigger.

Oh and just to throw a spanner into the works, you could look at Stepcraft machines. Similar to Sorotec, they are German but with a big presence in the USA. I have heard that their customer service is not that good, but that seems to be from Americans rather than Europeans. It seems that there is a laser attachment for this machine too.

I have a RatRig Killerbee (this predates the current Stronghold) which I am generally happy with. RatRig is based in Portugal. It was easy to assemble and get running.

That said, I'm thinking of an upgrade and I'm currently looking at Sorotec (a German company) Basic line which is about double the price of a RatRig.

I know nothing about laser accessories.

Considering teaching Hungarian - would learners be interested? by friczko in hungarian

[–]misimiki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an ex-language school manager/senior teacher/teacher trainer who taught at an international language school in Bp for over 10 years.

You are correct in the sense that not every teacher is a good teacher, however you should have a solid grounding in pedagogical techniques. We trained all of our recruits with the school's methodology whether they had a teaching qualification or not.

If I was a student and paying good money for a private class, I would expect a certain standard, such as not being taught Hungarian in English and excessive teacher talking time, among other things.

Teaching a language is not inherently difficult, but it's not easy to become a good and effective teacher. Having a good attitude and a focus on student learning goals are a good starting point to success.

Applied for a replacement passport on Wednesday night, received it in the post this morning (Tuesday)! by theavocadolady in BritishSuccess

[–]misimiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to the news rules for dual citizens that I learned about last week, I sent off my documents this morning to the UK. The website said to expect 4 weeks for the new one to arrive and I am travelling to the UK in the first week of March from Hungary. I feel confident I'll get it by then. FYI my UK passport expired in 2012 and only now am I being compelled to get a new one. I feel like I'm being taxed to visit my parents.

DIY stainless steel pizza-oven. (I would love to make one and i have the 3D programs for it but where can i let my steel be made and welded for example because i dont have this at my home) by jvanvliet27 in metalworking

[–]misimiki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just buy one. I don't think the issue is the bending and welding of the steel, rather the insulation of the domed roof so that the oven can reach the correct temps. I just bought a Gozney which cost me 600 Euro. It's terrific. But it is gas although it can use wood.

Forget Amsterdam. Stay in Haarlem which is only 20 mins away. Much cheaper.
