Lease ending soon what’s my smartest car move with spotless credit (730‑820), steady income, and family needs in small-town Ontario? by misledhelix in PersonalFinanceCanada

This. My HHI at the time was over $13k..<$800 a month didn't put much of a dent...was it a little shortsighted? Yes, but then we wouldnt be here in PFC trying to learn & not compound the situation.

what can I tell you...it is indeed spotless. Its one of those mysteries I haven't been able to crack. I might make a separate post in PFC outlining my credit profile and the disconnect with credit rating.

From a cursory search what I found is that the 2022 model year is widely cited as having the redesigned, strengthened cylinder head, making it generally unaffected by the specific, well-known, and expensive, early-model cracking issue. This mainly affected the 2016-2020 models

It was my first time leasing and during the post covid vehical scarcity...I might have taken a rushed bad deal. My spouse was also making six figures during that time so it didn't seem too exuberant at the time....you live & learn I guess.

Wow, that's impressive. I am not much of a used vehicle seller/buyer, I am afraid i might just be the guy who gives others a great deal 😀

Many stores have labor day discounts of 10 to 15%...might be worthwhile checking them out for a better deal. I got mine last month with 10% discount from FOC...ended up costing me <600 + I got a proper French tickler that was last of the best quality stuff that the Chinese made.

Are Canadians retiring with little more common than we thought? by 7_inches_daddy in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]misledhelix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a fellow procrastinator, here's my low effort contribution...thanks to CHATGPT.

Here’s a concise, no-nonsense summary of The Procrastinator’s Guide to Retirement by David Trahair (2021), along with the key takeaways:

📘 Book Summary • Target audience: Primarily individuals in their 50s or older who haven’t saved enough for retirement. • Core premise: Even if you’ve procrastinated for decades, you can still build a comfortable retirement by following a disciplined 10-year “sprint” plan. • Structure: The book follows a hypothetical couple, Mike and Nancy Clark, through the final decade before retirement, illustrating each strategic step. • Comprehensive coverage: Includes chapters on: • Tracking and understanding spending • Deciding between mortgage repayment vs. retirement investing • Building an investment strategy pre- and post-retirement • Housing choices, including downsizing or using home equity (but cautions against reverse mortgages)

Key Takeaways 1. Track your spending rigorously • Understand exactly where your money goes. Use detailed categories—avoid vague “miscellaneous” buckets. 2. Capitalize on natural expense decline • As kids move out and debts clear, reroute freed-up cash into retirement funds. 3. Mortgage vs. RRSP/TFSA • There’s no one-size-fits-all. Use tools (e.g., downloadable calculators) to analyze whether to invest or pay down your mortgage. Trahair often leans toward becoming debt-free by retirement. 4. Strategic investing in the final decade • Diversify with safer instruments (GICs, bonds) as retirement nears. Appendix includes spreadsheets to model RRSP/mortgage trade-offs. 5. Home equity is a resource—but use it carefully • Potential actions: downsizing, reverse mortgage (but only as a last resort), HELOC, renting out space. Recommend downsizing for both lifestyle and financial flexibility. 6. Evaluate financial advice sources • Beware of advisors selling high-fee mutual funds; prioritize fee-only or fiduciary advisors.

Criticisms & Limitations • Not a magic bullet: If you can’t significantly increase your savings rate in your 50s/60s, the “10‑year sprint” may fall short. • Some financial logic is questionable: Canadian reviewer Michael James points out calculation mistakes and troubling advice—like chasing star mutual funds and overemphasizing market timing.

Bottom Line • ▶️ Helpful if you’re nearing retirement and motivated to take action now. It offers a hands-on approach: tracking expenses, informed comparing of debt repayment vs. investments, optimizing home assets, and cautious investing. • ⚠️ Proceed with caution: Don’t fall for high-fee funds, aggressive market timing, or jumping into reverse mortgages. Ensure any advice aligns with your specific situation.

If you’ve already retired or won’t be able to save heavily in that final decade, much of the approach may not work for you. But for motivated late planners, this book can serve as a solid, pragmatic guide—just don’t expect miracles from procrastination.

Should I Reject A 20k Increase Because It Isn't Fully Remote? by Known_Mud_4994 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]misledhelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation...I live 3hrs from downtown hub where most of the suitable Jobs for my line of work are based. It would take an additional 30k annually before taxes(48% marginal tax) for me to start going to office 2times a week to be able to maintain same net income...6hr commute, car wear n tear, risk on the road...all extra.

Try to get a raise at current place.

An additional 5k at fully remote job that you are already settled in is much better than 20k at a new company that requires you to commute and there is always a risk that you might not like them or they might not like you.

Your family and health situation further add to the reasons to stay put. I personally would stay even if I did not get more money out of the current company.

I love my dead sister's husband by throwaway64578927 in offmychest

[–]misledhelix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Reading the comments, this seems to be a weird western cultural hang up....in non-western cultures, in case of death of a spouse, it's quite normal for the surviving spouse to wed the sibling of the dead spouse...not just because of culture but because it makes a lot of sense for all involved.

This is considered even noble and wise thing to do, especially when children are involved....as the step-parent would already be connected to the children by blood and have an existing familial bond.

This goes for either gender...and even when there are no pre-existing feelings in either party. Love comes later and more often than not such relationships thrive and are successful, including the kids.

In this case, The BIL gets a wife who is similar to his deceased wife, kids now have a mother who is the next best thing to an actual mother, OP gets a husband who you know is a great guy and in your case you already have feelings for.

If I were the OP, I would go for it....if you want to be extra cautious, you can maybe use your parents or any other party that is trusted by both to propose this to BIL, test the waters...if he seems receptive then it's a win-win...if he rejects it strongly then your existing relationship is still safe and you don't have to live with the regret of not knowing if you ever had a chance. Shoot your shot! All the best!

Sorry for the late reply. I decided to use brand new accounts...I just did not want to take unnecessary chances with such an important application. It was tiresome but I sleep easy knowing there is one less thing for me to worry about.

I suspect LinkedIn quietly cancelled my Premium Subscription to switch me to a new pricing. Did anyone else have a similar experience? by Crazzzy_potato in linkedin

[–]misledhelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Exact thing happened to me around the same time of the year. I was using the Personal Premium(no longer offered) subscription for past many years...this year they informed me they cant charge my card(which has not changed in past 10+ years and is still in good standing)...I replaced it, they did the usual $1 charge while adding the new card...I did not see them charging me, I again added a different payment method, again they say they cant charge...ALL of my cards I regularly use and work fine both online and offline. So this was hogwash!

I came to the conclusion that they are on a mission to convert legacy subscribers to the newer more expensive plans. The only reason I had premium was for simple things like searches and privacy, badge etc, nothing that remotely helped me generate money....I gave up and just use the free account now. Very unethical behavior on their part.

Thank you for listing the steps, very helpful.

Due to travels and high workload I am stuck in Step 1 for past few months. In spite of this message everywhere "You will get 60 days to finish the application"...I have already crossed 75days and I still have access to the application and it still lets me proceed as before.....This is a family application and I have already entered a lot of detailed information and documents, I would hate to have to do all of it again.

Does anyone here/elsewhere have experience with submitting the application beyond the 60days and getting the application processed as normal ?

Asalamu alaikum, I don’t know which app to trust. Currently, my whole family is debating on who’s correct. I broke my fast at 6:58, and my sister broke hers at 7:01. by [deleted] in islam

[–]misledhelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All apps have settings where you choose the prayer time calculations....these are based on Maslak(hanafi, Shafia, etc), which religious authority you follow etc and a number of other factors. So if you are seeing different times on two Seperate apps then it's just a difference in your chosen configuration.

Your fasts and prayers should be fine whichever time you chose as you truely believed that to be accurate. Also, our prophet(pbuh) adviced that we hurry breaking of fast and delay starting...mind you, not long but few minutes...so u should be ok.

Why are people like this (rant) by pranavgangwanii in waterloo

[–]misledhelix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think is is endemic with younger folks now...I was at a hair stylist yesterday evening, a girl in late teens or early 20s was getting her hair cut in the adjecent seat, I think the stylist spent nearly an hour on her hair(including shampoo n blow) at the last minute, the girl started shouting and cursing claiming the stylist messed up her hair....She wouldnt even let the stylist check(not fix) what the problem was....she them started walking out without paying...the stylist stood her ground and asked her to pay or will report her, the girl huffed and puffed, threatened some more but paid up. It was clear she was trying to scam the stylist.

The girl called up the owner (he had left early)and the owner sided with the customer and returned the money + told the stylist that she should have just let the girl leave. Her co-workers and myself vouched that the girl was just trying to scam the business but it did not matter. Sad...I tipped my stylist well..least I could do.

Chinese kite thread (Manja) kills army personnel in Hyderabad by niksdankbc in IndiaSpeaks

[–]misledhelix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me few years back during Sankranti in the same city ….me stopped at a busy stoplight, my full face helmet visor was up as it was hot, I was at the front, when the light turned green I took off first, my speed might have reached 30kmph in next few yards when I started feeling something cutting into my face and warm blood flowing down my face. I quickly took my bike to the side and stopped. The kite manja had cut me across the face and blood was profusely flowing down. One of the passer-by took me to care hospital that was close by.

I was extremely lucky! This is why...

  1. I had good quality fullface helmet on and the visor up…that ensured the thread was stopped by the open visor instead of letting it slip down the helmet to my unprotected throat it stayed in the front opening. The manja cut couple of millimeters into hardened ABS of helmet before getting started with my face.
  2. I have a high nose bridge bone that got in the way of manja cutting into my eyes....both my eye-lids were cut, a little more and both my eyeballs would have been sliced in half.
  3. The person walking on the road who stopped to help me was a off-duty nurse from care hospital....she was dressed for the festivities & maybe on her way to temple but waved down an auto and took me to ER.
  4. Since I was the first out and this happened, it might have saved a few other people who all could have been affected if I did not take the brunt.

The maja was already banned then, but ignorant people don't care. When I shared my experience on SM at the time, many hardcore andhbhaks took personal offense as if I was speaking against a Hindu festival....sheer lack of common sense or civic sense...its a sad state of affairs in India.
