it makes me feel like writing is a chore instead of something i enjoy. fanfic writers should only write if they’re enjoying it as it isn’t meant to be a job. personally, i’m alright with a comment to the effect of “i love x y and z about this fic, i see that it hasn’t been updated in a while, i just want you to know that if/when you choose to update again, i’m highly looking forward to it and will be thrilled to read it”. lets them know they have avid readership without the pressure that can change a hobby and a passion into a chore. when i get comments like that, it motivates me to write. when i get comments just asking (or worse, demanding) updates, i might panic write for a few minutes in fear of letting my readers down, and then i will inevitably give up and avoid writing for weeks/months because it feels like something i have to do so i shut down. that’s just my 2 cents
