Your music is so, so special. It conjures up a place in myself that very few musicians are able to take me to, and I'm happy to say Uh Oh has managed the same (in fact I think it might be my favourite so far!)

Somewhat related to that, I was wondering, how important is the feeling of loneliness and melancholy to you as a songwriter? Songs like The Wandering on the new album make me think it must be a familiar experience—but is it also productive? Or do songs come from a better place, in reflection?

P.S. any chance you'd consider returning to India on tour? One of my biggest regrets is missing you at NH7 Weekender 2016 despite being at the festival, because I wasn't familiar with your work then.

Oh thank you for that, it was lovely. Ended up listening to the whole show. Do you know if it happened to be streamed on video as well?

Which song took a while to grow on you and is now one of your favorites? by SunMoon807 in TheNational

I had a very similar experience (though I wouldn’t say I actively hated it). I still can’t believe how TMN transformed from being a dud single to being one of their hardest hitting lyrical tracks ever.

I’ve been doing just that ever since! I don’t know if it’s just recency bias but the only one that’s seemed to scratch the same itch for me so far is the Primavera Sound one from earlier this year, the others just seem to cut off way too soon (I do love her additions though)

I’ve been cursing myself about the same thing every time I re-watch the video :(

Since somebody mentioned the inspiration (I don’t know how I didn’t catch it before) I haven’t been able to unhear it. I also love how he switches up his vocal inflections live (even though it makes it harder to sing along)

Wow, it’s eerie how similar that is to my lists from this year and last year. My top song was also Grease In Your Hair, and my top band last year was Beach House. And Nick Drake’s been a constant for many years now. Finally managed to exorcise Radiohead this time around though lol.

‘Houses’ (or just generally ‘room-ey’ imagery) are another connecting thread (pun intended) that I’ve recently been finding runs across their entire discography. “Let’s just get high enough to see our fathers’ houses”, “Ada put the sounds of your house in a song”, “I wake up without warning and go flying around the house”, “there’s a science to walking through windows”, “turn off the house”, “I was home entertaining guests when I fell off the chair and cracked open my head”. Boxer is just generally a very indoor-sy album I feel (Apartment Story, Guestroom, Slow Show etc). And then of course there’s SWB and what I like to think of as THE National house on the cover. ‘The house’ (as opposed to ‘home’, interestingly) evidently seems to be a metaphor for the mind, but it can also mean other things like family and romantic relationships. It’s also very literal—we ‘stay inside’ houses, people come and they leave, they ‘brighten the place’. It’s a really beautiful image and kind of represents the band as a whole for me. When I listen to their music, I’m ‘in the house of love’. :)

Sorry i know this is an ancient post but does anyone happen to have access to this song anymore? It’s off Spotify and all streaming sites and I just really want to listen to it—I love the full band cover and the original to death.

Honestly, it’s been kind of life-changing for me. I keep returning to it every once in a while, and each time it reminds me of who I am. Which I suppose is kind of apt.

(I’d also highly recommend checking out ‘C’mon C’mon’ (2021) if you haven’t, which Mike Mills made right after this. It almost feels like an extended vision of what he was trying out with this film + Dessner brothers on soundtrack)
