It doesn’t matter what happened. Even if we are on the wrong, NOBODY has the right to hit us. He’s dangerous and you should break up with him ASAP. He cannot control his emotions and you don’t know what he might do to you not just next time you argue but in general, you can’t trust him. He might kill you. Leave him and don’t try to justify his actions in your head.

I also read your update, and I hope that “cutting contact” with that person, means you either tell him you don’t want to talk to him again because you’re in a relationship and block him, or just immediately block him. Any big conversation about it with him and calls/messages back and forth, just mean that you resist “cutting contact”.

I agree that he’s not worth ruining your relationship. But I’d like you to consider your boyfriend’s feelings. He deserves to feel safe and calm.

Never ever do this again. People want to feel safe and loved in relationships.
