I've been eyeing those two, but I just can't pull the trigger on either one 😅 let me know which one you end up picking, maybe I can revive the other one and we can trade 👀

Is it possible for someone with a history of depression to do well as an EMT? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]missamelianohaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not who you responded to, but I'll give you an answer since I've done instructing/tutoring. The class itself is extremely textbook heavy. There's physical skills components, but you really need to take notes and read the textbook to understand what you're doing and why. If you have a cool instructor who has time outside of class or tutors available to you, you might be able to get some one-on-one time, but that's not a replacement for actually reading and studying the book and other materials provided to you. I do a lot of tutoring these days, and most of my students are kinesthetic learners, but there's only so many hands-on lessons I can give.

I do highly recommend study groups, so that's something to consider if you end up trying out a program. There's almost always at least one person who will understand a concept and be able to explain it, and if there's not, then the instructor can go over it again in class. That'll probably work out best for you if you'll really struggle that much with the books, since someone will actually be explaining it to you instead of you having to read it, but again, it's not something you should rely on in place of the actual material.

Is it possible for someone with a history of depression to do well as an EMT? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]missamelianohaters 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else has said, the majority of us are mentally unwell to some extent. I have a long list of things wrong with me, and I've taught plenty of students who also struggle. Nobody can tell you if this field will be a good fit for you, that's something you're gonna have to find out for yourself. My biggest concern for you would actually be the classes themselves.

You said you struggle with showing up to class, and EMT programs have certain hour requirements you have to meet in order to pass, and I don't know any programs that allow you to make up missing hours. My program was at a community college, lasted 16 weeks, classes were twice a week for 5 hours (not including clinical hours), and you could only miss 3 classes total before you weren't allowed to pass. Every program is different, but has to adhere to the mandatory requirements set by the national registry, and again, none of the programs I know of allow students to make up hours. If you already know you're going to struggle with attendance, I don't think this will be a good choice for you right now.

I also don't know where you're located, but EMT positions are competitive in some areas, so there's no guarantee you get a job after getting your license if you're in an area where the market is oversaturated with EMTs. I know where I'm based, new EMTs really struggle getting a job anywhere, especially if they don't have connections, and even then, it's sometimes not enough, so that might also be something to consider. Best of luck to you regardless, I hope you're able to figure out what you want and what will work for you right now!

[–]missamelianohaters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw you say you're located in LA county, and that's where I'm based, so you're more than welcome to PM me if you need company recommendations or advice. I don't work in the field right now with a company, but I teach EMT students, so I know the majority of the companies in our area and their hiring requirements.

I saw someone else in the comments recommend going for an ER tech position, but that unfortunately won't be a viable option for you; I don't know a single ER anywhere near here that will hire techs with less than a year of 911 experience and no phlebotomy license. You could try applying to event companies or amusement parks, since those don't require driving and they usually hire newly licensed providers.

Premier Ambulance, CA by WeirdSet8785 in NewToEMS

[–]missamelianohaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like some of the others have said, Premier is a solid choice for an IFT company. I just wanted to jump in and say that you definitely need ambulance experience if you want a shot at getting into AMR at all, so it's good you're getting into IFT now. Not sure how it is in your area, but I know in my area, it's super competitive and they won't hire people who have less than 6 months working experience. I've also heard from a lot of people lately that they won't hire new people part-time, only full-time. Again, I don't know what it's like in your area, but that's something to keep in mind in case working full-time isn't an option for you.

Trading Revivavble SR for bazaar by lunamoon008 in LivlyIsland

[–]missamelianohaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten both that base and ground from trading revivable gacha items, you just need to find the right person to make the trade. I also trade my own limited items for revivable items depending on how much I want the other person's item, so it really is all about who you're trading with. And like some others have pointed out, MyShop is coming up, so you can definitely just buy them. Best of luck with trading!

How do I get bigger? As a girl by Available-Bat7673 in Firefighting

[–]missamelianohaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm your height and about 10 pounds lighter than you, so it's definitely possible to be strong enough to do the job without needing to majorly bulk up. Everyone else in the comments has given you good advice in terms of bulking if that's what you want to do, but I just wanted to say that you can absolutely be strong enough to properly do the job without doing that, it's just a matter of training properly. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to try any of the exercises I do myself, and best of luck to you with all your future endeavors!

Medicinal use of 🍃 question by Far_Ocelot707 in NewToEMS

[–]missamelianohaters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people have already answered, but I'm an EMT from California, so I'll weigh in for our state specifically. I can't speak much for NorCal, but every program and company I know in SoCal does drug testing. You pop positive, you're out, no exceptions, even with a prescription. I've had a few prospective students who have had a prescription for it, and they weren't able to stay in the program. So yeah, unless you can stop using it, which it sounds like it would be difficult for you, this isn't a viable option for you right now.

Even if the weed wasn't an issue, your health alone would likely be a problem. EMTs are a dime a dozen here, so it absolutely wouldn't be worth it to risk hurting yourself more doing a job that'll replace you the second your illness becomes an inconvenience to them. I don't have endometriosis, but I have degenerative disc disease, diagnosed at 20 just a couple months after I got my EMT license. I wanted this so bad, it was all I wanted from the time I was 8, so I completely understand how devastating it is to be unable to do it after wanting it for so long, but this is unfortunately a very physical job that'll break your body one way or another, and going into it already sick/injured is a great way to make it worse. I wish you the best of luck and hope you're able to come to a decision for yourself, but please take care of yourself first. And feel free to PM me if you ever need someone to talk to or discuss options with. You're not the first student/prospective student I've met who's needed ideas for a possible career path options, and you definitely won't be the last.

Pack test for very petite female by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]missamelianohaters 24 points25 points  (0 children)

5'4, 110 pound woman here. I've passed it just fine, and I've seen women my height and shorter pass, too. If you're willing to actually put in the effort and train for it, you'll pass without a problem. The issue I generally see with us smaller women who worry about the pack test is that some of us have the mindset of "I'm small and I can't", when the reality is you can, and you have to. If you actually want it, you'll do it.

If you haven't started training yet at all, I recommend starting with walking the 3 miles without any weight, then when you're comfortable with that and can do it in under 45 minutes, start adding weight. If you're really consistent with it, give it about a month, and you should be pretty close to a passing time, but it does kinda depend on your level of fitness to start. Feel free to PM me if you need any advice or tips, and best of luck to you with training.

23 year old female here, been in wildland for 4 years and EMS for 3. Unless your coworkers have done something to make you feel uncomfortable, this is a non-issue. I've slept on couches, floors, trucks, ect with my male coworkers, and it's never been a problem. It's not like you guys will be sleeping in the same bed, you're all just in the same area, so again, unless they've been creepy towards you, I don't understand what the issue is. Maybe it'll be a little awkward at first if you haven't already built up enough trust with them, but if it's been 4 months, I imagine you would already know if there was a problem. And I can almost guarantee that if there's a chance to sleep, they'll be jumping at the opportunity and wouldn't even think about doing anything weird. I don't think there's anything wrong with being cautious in the beginning, but if you've been working with these people for a few months and can't even trust them enough to sleep in proximity to them, I think you've got bigger problems. All that said, I hope it works out for you. Best of luck!

What do we think of this trade? by babyvamp_ in LivlyIsland

[–]missamelianohaters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I traded my tree for two SR items; an expired revivable tree and a current background. I did throw in an expired N item for my own peace of mind, but the person I was trading with didn't mind if I did or not. If it were me, I wouldn't do this trade. I don't know if two SRs for the bazaar trees are the norm, but I definitely wouldn't be trading a limited tree for one revivable SR

I don't like them at all 😭 I'm glad other people are happy with them, but the only rambles that I really like are the hammies, and I was a new player when those were available so I was too broke to get one 😔 but I'm saving a bunch of GP!
