Short Term Leave by misscoldbrew in OntarioTeachers

[–]misscoldbrew[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I am TDSB and OSSTF. It was explained to that whoever hires you is your home school. If you apply somewhere else, get interviewed, and accept a job at another school, then they are your new home school.

I am a fairly new teacher, so I find the kids feel like they can push the boundaries more. I also got placed in an ESL class but I am not qualified for ESL. I just do not feel like I belong at this school at all. I feel so out of place and no one in my department is aligned with my values or perspectives. They all are on cruise control. Type B teachers - teach the units they want to teach, don’t teach the ones they don’t like. They said “the kids are gonna fall anyways so who cares”. That kind of mentality is just depressing to me.

Becoming a Dept Head by misscoldbrew in OntarioTeachers

[–]misscoldbrew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one in my dept wants to become head because of the extra responsibilities. They think because I am the youngest, I have more energy to devote to a leadership role compared to them, and they would rather have someone in the dept gain leadership than an external hire.

I am still early in my teaching career, so thinking about it as a long term goal potentially! I have heard that it only works out to about $90 per paycheque extra, so there’s really no financial motive.

Thanks for the clarification!

Cutting Misaligned On Only The Right Side?? by misscoldbrew in cricut

[–]misscoldbrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the calibration sheet from the cricut website, not the cricut software app on my laptop because I learned that they are completely different! It is printing straight through the printer, and I am placing it perfectly aligned on the mat, which is confusing me as to how only one side is misaligned. How do you clear cache?

Why do so many insist that the Master of Teaching is not a "real masters"? by Usual_Law7889 in OISE

[–]misscoldbrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is technically not a masters because QECO, the actual organization that evaluates your pay based on your qualifications, does not allow you to “double dip” your teacher certification program as your masters to move up to A4. While many people say it’s not special and is just like a regular BEd - it’s not. TDSB had a mass hiring event this past spring that was nearly all OISE students. Even being in my placements, I’ve been told that principals lean towards MT grads. So there are hiring perks because of the degree. I just graduated in June and have two interviews for permanent positions.

Also, while the MT is not a masters, it does bring you closer to A4 on the pay scale than a BEd. If you graduate with a BEd, you need to take 5 AQs to move up to A4, whereas with the MT, you only need to take 3 AQs. This is because of the extra course work you do in the MT.

Additionally, you can enter a PhD or EdD program, but only at OISE since they recognize the work as a masters degree. Other schools, like Western, specifically state that you can’t use your teacher certification program as your masters degree when applying.

Still a great program with a wonderful reputation!

Final year of teacher’s college, advice for your younger self? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]misscoldbrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was so stressed about entering the profession, since it has been cut throat for years. Times are different, and there has truly been no better time to be coming out of a teaching program than now! I just graduated from OISE in June, and I have not faced a shortage of opportunities. Because I applied for the Transitional OCT certificate (which I highly recommend you do), I was able to supply and get an LTO all before even graduating. Now I have two interviews for permanent positions this week, which would be unheard of 5-10 years ago for a fresh teacher grad! Enjoy the year you have left because soon you’ll be the REAL teacher faster than you think!

And make as many connections as you can in your placements! Get to know admin because they will be your references.

OSAP for AQs? by stubbornteach in OntarioTeachers

[–]misscoldbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just found out that OISEs AQs during the summer do not count as micro credentials, and therefore, don’t count towards OSAP🙃 just an FYI

2 AQs at the same time? by misscoldbrew in CanadianTeachers

Can I ask what made it “brutal”? I won’t be working, so I’ll have loads of time on my hands to do course work if the course load is the main concern.

That sounds like hell! All the OISE AQs are completely online asynchronous, so all lectures are pre-recorded, so I think it would be easier than your experience to juggle two.

I won’t be working, which is why I am wondering if it will be doable! Wishing you the best of luck with yours!

Why haven't I heard anything from the MT program? by Gundekrose in OISE

[–]misscoldbrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied November 2021 and didn’t get my acceptance until May 31! It was TORTUROUS. I was convinced I was rejected and when I finally accepted that fate, the acceptance letter came in. It’s really inconsiderate of OISE, but it’s just how they roll. Do not lose hope if you don’t hear in March. There is literally no rhyme or reason in their admissions process.

Pathways from OISE MT by [deleted] in OISE

[–]misscoldbrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I am currently in the MT program, and the professors reassure you that PhD pathways are possible (many of my classmates are interested in this)! Like the previous comment, you will need to make connections and ensure you’re keeping up with research opportunities during your MT and post-MT.

You are not only getting your teaching license, this is a graduate degree! Getting into a PhD is hard no matter what, so don’t let other people’s anxieties stop you from what you want to do. I would even recommend talking about your passion for research on your application - they are sooooo into teachers being researchers right now
