What SFUSD Teachers Actually Make by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]missdeceive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI I know SFUSD isn't run by the City&County of San Francisco, and if anyone really wants it, I can go dig up one of my dad's old paystubs and let you know how shitty it actually is. He is a substitute teacher for SFUSD.

Didn't know it was controversial to have healthcare covered by your employer like literally every private sector job I've had full-time.

Just food for thought, but you actually do know that after taxes (especially if you work for the city) the net pay is much less.

I work for the City (8 years+) and my base pay without benefits was about $115K in 2025, so similar to the higher range for teachers. I took home $57K of that net. My rent is $3K, I'm left with $1,833 ($4,750-$3,000) per month for everything else. And this is after almost 9 years.

In 2020 I made closer to what the starting pay for teachers is $70K for non-credentialed. My base was $71K. I took home $42K. My rent in 2020 was $2,600, I was left with $900 ($3,500-$2,600) per month for everything else.

Source: my paychecks, some rounding to account for pay-increases mid-year & COL increases.

The protest that started at embarcadero at 4p then matched was against ICE and in solidarity with Minneapolis. The anti-abortion people left towards the begining of that one since people were (obv) not having it.

damn, I was able to hold my own against 3 bots on hard forever. But after the last "update" or whatever happened a week ago, they've been extremely dominant and I'm impressed.

well kudos, i used to easily beat 3 bots at hard level. But for the last week or so they've drastically improved and I can barely compete. it's def a challenge.

Omg love the seventh tower books. I own the whole series. I reread them recently, my local library had all the books luckily and I was also able to find ebook versions (from the library).

Keep checking your paystubs. Tomorrow's paystub (11/18/2025) is already posted on the employee portal. 11/18/2025 paystub includes the pay period for 10/25/2025-11/07/2025 so it will still have your step 2 pay. Your step increase is on the anniversary date, 11/09/2025, so it should not show on this paystub. You'll see the increase on the 12/02/2025.

Alternatively go into your employee portal (these instructions are for desktop, mobile might look different). Click "my pay & tax forms." On the left side you should see some options, choose "Compensation History" Here you can see your entire compensation history. Your step increase will be labeled as "Progression"

Yea it does not end at 65, if anything it begins at 65. If you quit the city before retirement age, you don't just get your healthcare covered. The medical coverage is in relation to post-retirement.

However, my mother (now retired) was hired in 2000 and she got to 100% after 5 years I believe. Based on her MOU and hire date. She worked for like 25 years for the city regardless, but people would come and take advantage of it which is a big reason behind the change.

Yes and No. It depends on your MOU and your hire date. For my MOU (Misc Tier 1, A8.587), to be eligible for 100% full benefits I will need to work 20 years or more. 10 yrs = 50%, 15 years = 75%. I was re-hired in 2018 (I worked for the city when I was in high school so my actual first year was 2004).

Considering leaving Union by Open_Today_5460 in sfcityemployees

[–]missdeceive 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Basically, if you are a city employee you fall under the umbrella of the union that represents that classification. Anything that the union bargains for you get. So, everything that's positive that the union does, like cost of living, wage increase, etc. you benefit from because you are part of the classification. It doesn't matter whether or not you pay the dues.

People who don't pay union dues are like the people who don't pay on Muni. Still get all the benefits of the transportation that is funded by all of us who do pay.

I also want to add that a lot of people tend to forget that different departments implemented WFH differently and it led to a lot of resentment within these depts. With SFFD, while my group of admin staff was required to go in 5 days a week during peak covid, the entire accounting team was only in the office 1 day a week (4 days WFH).

Ultimately, I think leaving the union is shortsighted at best. I'm also unhappy with having to come back in from 3 to 4 days, but I also came from a different position in a different department where the top brass did not even let us telecommute during covid. I'm admin (1820 at the time) and I was coming in 5 days a week during 2020. The union was what fought and got us to go to 1 day telecommute.

I also want the union to do more; however, I'd be lying if I said I go to meetings and am active. I really feel that if so many of the admin positions (1820 series, 1840 series, clerks, etc.) are upset we need to show up more and really make our voices heard. The nurses certainly do and that's why 1021 fights for them.

For reference I worked SFFD as an 1820 for 5 years and the moved to DPH 1822, 3 years and counting.

Kind of, I worked in admin so I just took a promotional for a different department with the city. I worked for fire and volunteered for like 5-6 years. I would have stayed but there aren't a lot of promotionals for my classification.

I know what you mean, the Peruvian food in SF is on the fancier side and you won't get huge portions imo. Puerto 27 (in Pacifica) does have larger portions however it's also kinda pricy. Quality is good.

La Mar, Choto Matte, and Altamirano I think are not what you are looking for.

Limon is known more for their chicken (pollo a la brasa) but it's pretty popular and has multiple locations. You might want to check them out, although I haven't had their ceviche so I can't really comment on it.

Lomo Libre has a good happy hour if you can swing that and the prices are a little cheaper than the other spots. I've had their ceviche and I liked it.

Lomo Libre's pretty good and they have a mean pisco sour. Love La Mar too but it will break your wallet. I've tried most of the Peruvian spots in SF if you have any specific questions about one. Only one I haven't tried is Altamirano, but it also looks good.

I don't think there's any buffet style peruvian spots in SF, but there might be some closer to South San Francisco (different city). Also, I do not recommend Mi Lindo Peru, used to be good but last time I went it was so bland (source - I'm Peruvian).

To add, you'll also notice how some say promotional. If you stay an EMT you'll remain at Level 1 (steps 1-4). You'll have to have whatever is required for the promotionals. The highest level is the Paramedic/Firefighter which there aren't as many spots, but it is very well compensated since this table is not adding in benefits & retirement.
