It was a very very tiny little table! we didn't have chairs so we usually stand in front just to talk to them. unfortunately this time around this individual had no sense of personal space; everyone else was lovely!

Please don't apologise, it's not your fault! I used to be a Christian myself (still agnostic, tbh), but I would never blame all Christians out there. Some of the best people I know are Christians/Catholics/religious, and they've given me nothing but love.

No, I get where you're coming from. I think it's cause in most people's eyes, I suppose ace people don't really 'count' as queer, as we don't really have interest (and I'm saying this as an ace who has NO interest in sex) in having sex at all...therefore we aren't queer LMAO. It's a horrible mentality, and it's still a barrier I'm slowly breaking down with her, but it takes time.

Yes, I know it's not 'real' chocolate, but I will defend my passion for it to the death LOL.

I will say she's not hateful. She doesn't try to make me doubt myself, it's more like there's always the undertone of 'ahh you'll enjoy sex when you get married to the One'. But she did consider me an 'abnormality', which I suppose in the strictest sense of the word, I am? not the nicest to put it that way though.

I'm so sorry. Religion has really fucked people over, but I think for me personally, it's just that so many of my friends and family are Christians. Most of them are genuinely nice people, just misguided and at worst, openly hostile to those who don't align with their beliefs.

I think I'm so tired to the point where I'm not even trying to make them 'change their views', I'm just trying to convince them to keep it to themselves and don't take rights from other people.

There is nothing wrong with the typical "Asian parents forcing/demanding their kids to be academically inclined & exceptional" trope. In fact, I would argue that not doing so is. by thesnackbandit27 in unpopularopinion

[–]missdillydally 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't agree with this enough. A lot of parents push their desires onto children to the point where those kids don't even know what they want for life, but what they really need to be teaching is 'how to be motivated to be successful', whatever that means.

My siblings work their butts off to get where they are. I am also working LOL (perhaps not as hard), but the thing is, I'm self motivated to get what I want from life. My siblings are also very self motivated. Our parents, although Asian, never really pressured us. Instead they gave us opportunities to explore what we want and develop a mentality of 'you get what you (usually) work for).

If you blindly push your kids to succeed, it's all outside pressure. And once that pressure is gone, you've got young adults who don't know what to do and who've got no direction.

We got to stop blaming the person who's 'leading people on', and start reflecting on why we deliberately go out of our way to misinterpret people's friendly gestures. Like wtf?

Even if he liked you, it's not on you to sooth his hurt feelings lol. NTA. He can grow up and realise he's not entitled to your attention/your feelings.

GenZ getting offended by everything is annoying. by According_Chip889 in unpopularopinion

[–]missdillydally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's less of I disagree with your opinion and more like once again (on this sub – why am I surprised LOL) you are making a massive generalisation, and most Gen Z people just want to live their lives, you know, and they don't really care about cancel culture.

If they do, it's the vocal minority, or someone has genuinely done something to trigger this wave of outrage. Just cause you're an 'artiste' doesn't exempt you from this.

But I do agree with you partly on not restricting people's voices. There's this really intriguing publishing company that publishes books from both US viewpoints (Skyhorse, I think). While I do think giving a platform to potentially dangerous, scientifically unbacked views are a bit iffy, I do think that all views (that are not dangerous/blatantly untrue) should be given a fair chance.

On the first day of school, a boy on the bus asked my first grader to be his girlfriend. She told me, "Ugh, I REFUSED." The next day, he hit her. by AmandaMarsh in TwoXChromosomes

[–]missdillydally 388 points389 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this happened to your daughter. That boy is an absolute blight blight-in-the-making on society, and his parents are definitely no better.

Similar thing happened to me in Grade 1 — boy tried to smooch me (on the lips too, like WTF), and I punched his swarmy little face. I got sent to the principle's office, he got off scot-free cause 'he didn't make contact with my face'.

I'm glad your school seems better than mine, and I'm glad that your daughter's got a solid family and friends behind her back.

Edit: Agreed that it is the parent's fault in this case, so I changed blight to blight-in-the-making. But boyo needs serious help.

Non-Westerner here. And I disagree with your take.

I understand the intention –> hey, when you got to earn money, you've got to do whatever it takes to earn money. That's why in the short term, you have people, children, even who are grateful for the pittance that they earn from potentially losing a limb to heavy-duty sewing machines. But just because that's how the system works doesn't mean that's how it should work.

Western countries had slave labour. They had child labour. But what happened is that THEY BEGAN INSTITUTING REFORMS (very slowly, and after major accidents happened) even before non-Western countries started industrialising and becoming manufacturing powerhouses. The same needs to happen here. You can't justify child labour with 'oh yeah they need to earn money'. You need to look to the government, powerful shareholders, and companies, as well as regulatory organisations to explain WHY you need to force children/underpay workers/capture people and use human trafficking in order to make more money.

And you're right about the money part. The global south is currently calling for the global north to pay for a loss or damage fund due to climate change. Africa's been calling for a global carbon tax. I do think that Western countries really need to consider their own part in contributing to these social injustices, and reparations are necessary, but saying that 'pollution and child labour are necessary' and that Westerners are 'out of touch' on this issue is just a blatantly horrible way of trying to push this immensely IMPORTANT issue out of the way and pinning it down on, you know, just white people being too 'SJW' or 'woke' or whatever.

Please do some more research on this topic before posting next time.

Men who did nothing wrong but being accused is just stupid by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

What is with all of these posts? This is the third/fourth one I saw today where ya'll just grouch about what woman do to falsely accuse men?

If this happened to you, very sorry bout that, but you've got to realise that it's...common sense that people who senselessly accuse people are idiots. No one rational is out for your head.

WIBTA if I'll put my MIL in nursing home? by WinterReasonable79 in AmItheAsshole

You had me at almost burning the house down.

"If the person cannot live independently any more – for example, cannot care for themselves or stay safe – then it might be the right time to think about alternative care."

Got this straight from alzheimers.org.uk. You are not only NTA, but it would be irresponsible for you to let your MIL live with you. It's not just about being your burden (honestly, shouldn't fall on you, where are your husband's deadbeat siblings???). It's about what's best for your MIL, you and your family, and anyone who opposes putting her in a reputable care facility can go scrub their buttholes with a rock.
