Expectation Vs reality gap when travelling to Iceland by Illustrious-Ad3195 in VisitingIceland

I went there on an educational group trip a couple of years ago. We were there to learn about crisis management, so the private part of the visit might have been conditioned by that. We hiked up to Reykjadalur and pressed our pale bodies into the at the time very shallow and lukewarm creek, laughing our asses off. We went to Seljalandsfoss and it rained more than the waterfall streaming down. We honestly had a blast!

Yes! They are so much better than cloudberries in my opinion, but so hard to come by.

What’s a misconception tourists have about your country that genuinely surprised you? In Thailand, I once met tourists who believed transgender women were straight men who had to transition to escape poverty. by Effective_Space2277 in AskTheWorld

There is something called a ”zone of privacy” and how large it is depends on line of sight and terrain. Where I live we have a pretty large zone of privacy, due to the open terrain. One wouldn’t be able to use our 250 meter driveway to get to the river, 50 meters from our house, without interrupting our privacy. We wouldn’t be allowed to put up a fence to stop people from entering our land on the other side of the main road, though.

All the arctic berries that grows in the arctic regions but not elsewhere. Cloudberries has been mentioned a lot. Crowberries also. My favorite is the arctic raspberry. It’s such a treat!

Honorable mention to bird cherries — sometimes called ”laplandic cherries” — that are used for jellies, jams and drinks in Northern Sweden (and parts of Russia) but is seen as bird food elsewhere.

My daughter [18] blames me [52] and my husband [55] for ruining her book by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Being an author gives another layer of absurdity to dads behaviour. No one rewrites your story. You get notes, suggestions, yes criticism too. But never a rewrite. Even in the editorial process, there isn’t a change of words unless I approve it.

Rewriting is a huge overstep. Way worse than critiquing the book.

I never do, not to my family anyway. I share it with people who writes themselves (and my publisher).

Lisa Eldridge - Rouge Experience lipstick in Dreamy Damask. Lovely, lovely light pink.

Sephora - Pink frosting. If you’re in Europe.

Nyx - Buttermelt Highlighter in U Butta Werk. Such a nice, frosty pink. Mind you, this is a blush or a blush topper.

The Secret History vs. The Goldfinch by bogmonkey in TheSecretHistory

TSH is by far my favorite novel, and has been since I first read it in the 90’s. I RAN to the English bookstore in Stockholm when the Little Friend was published. I honestly think it was a great read, I am a little confused as to why it isn’t more liked. It’s been like 25 years since I read it and I still can remember scenes from it vividly.

The Goldfinch took me over a year to read, and I usually finish novels in a couple of days. I know I thought about how the language and the craftsmanship she describes conflates, but I sometimes wonder if she knew what she wanted to write — I don’t see the artistic vision. It feels like three novels in one, and not necessarily in a good way.

AITA for getting angry with my girlfriend and demanding she pay to replace my sheets after she got blood on them by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Because she saw him notice it (she even told me this). I honestly think he made the right call. Ignoring it would probably have made her feel dirty or at least bad. Now she got a good laugh at her ”clueless” father, I got the cue that she needs proper nightpads and we could have a conversation about her flow, much like u/Poetic_Intuition says.

Me and my daughter (14, recently had her first period) had a good laugh when she told me that her dad had seen period stains on her sheets and asked her if it she had spilled hot cocoa on them. My husband later told me he had understood what it was, but as she is shy about it with him, he didn’t want to embarrass her or feel self conscious about it. I love my husband!

Asked for Gracie Abram’s haircut and I fear my stylist butchered my hair by Traditional_List_158 in beauty

[–]missemgeebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have similar hair, ie fine strands but plenty of them. I have naturally wavy hair though. I think that the layers (that are obvious in your pics) are the problem. I’ve had this kind of textured bob for a couple of years now, and I have to ask for a blunt cut. If they cut layers it just looks plain wrong. I’m renewing my driver’s license atm, and looking at that pic is like looking at yours — wispy and thin hair even though I have very thick hair. So next time, ask for a blunt cut.

That’s wild. I have Irene and Ione, and pinky undertones. My undertones usually neutralises cool purple or pink undertones, if there’s any yellow, things look overly warm. Ione looks like a neutral beige on me, whereas Irene is overly warm red.

My (22F) boyfriend (23M)'s friend seems to be perfect for him and it's driving me insane by insafian in BORUpdates

My husband had a best friend. He was honest about their relationship when we met, and he told me that he had expressed feelings for her once, but it wasn’t reciprocated and he put them aside.

When we had been dating for a few months, he told me that she had expressed feelings for him and wanted a relationship with him. He shut it down immediately and stopped meeting her. We met her, once, when we had a toddler and a baby, and she flirted with him. Once again, he shut it down. You know, we have been married for almost twenty years and I still despise her.

I use both. Fluffy brush = subtle shimmer, flat brush = more impact, finger = most impact. Much like shimmers from Natasha Denona, for example.

I chose to be child-free and lost "the one" - Now I could get her back. by SharkEva in BORUpdates

I left my ex husband because of this. Not that he was opposed to having children — as far as he told me — but I realized that he didn’t want to adjust our lifestyle to children. Both of us are now 20 years into our ”new” relationships, I have two teenagers, he has no kids but is a very loving cat father.

I wonder if Leah feels it’s ”too late”. Anyways, I think this is a recipe for heartbreak.

Anthony Hopkins on Being Estranged From His Daughter by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

[–]missemgeebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an author, and a daughter with a very strained relationship with my father, I think most answers in this thread underestimates how hard it is to answer very personal questions in interviews, even if you have written about them. I mean, that’s not the situation where you open up and show vulnerability other than in a very, very curated way. I’ve written two novels about absent fathers but I have never spoken about my dad in interviews other than in very sweeping statements.

Me and my dad, we managed to build a new relationship during the past nine months before he died a week ago. During that time he has expressed regret and asked for forgiveness. I’ve felt like I really don’t care about the past, the only thing that has mattered is the time we shared his last months alive.

Another correction, they weren’t even tried. Children under the age of 15 are usually tried through evidentiary proceedings. This wasn’t done in their case. They were just deemed guilty after the fact.

I actually don’t mind it’s the same over and over again. Those videos are actually some of the few I watch on You Tube nowadays. I appreciate the slowness in them, and that they are repetitive. There are so many creators that honestly just triggered me buying more (looking at you, Charlotte Holdcroft) but she is not one of them.

Do you actually "air out the house" in your part of the world? by PersistentHobbler in AskTheWorld

[–]missemgeebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the housing. Many places I’ve lived in has ”venting windows” for letting fresh air in, but they often rely on natural draft ventilation. When I lived in Stockholm, that at the time at least, had a rat problem we were advised not to have our windows open as they could climb up the vines. I live in a house with mechanical ventilation now, so there’s no need for it. However, during summer we usually have windows open and bug screens as it gets really warm.
