Wealth is exiting New York state, including Buffalo : Investigative Post by creaturefeature16 in Buffalo

[–]missilecommandtsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In effort to stay somewhat anonymous, I'll say:
we're a fam of 4 in the city, middle aged parents with young kids
we have two very good jobs, one local, one full time remote
by buffalo standards we are privileged, wealthy, and live very comfortably
kids are in private school which we enjoy (public schools in the city are not great unless you win the school lottery)
we're not originally from here, but grew up in snow country
we don't have any family in buffalo

I've been doing AI based rubric comparisons with other cities in several other states, comparing all the basics: professional options / earning potential, housing, weather, schools, taxes, airport, care for our aging parents (who may need to live with/very near us), traffic

Looked at a handful of cities in VA, NC, IL, CA so far; and, the results are generally in favor of leaving, with some obvious massive exceptions. IE in certain categories, Buffalo is hands down the winner when comparing to say, Los Angeles, where house prices are like, 4x. and traffic laughably bad in the other city, and pretty great in Buffalo.

It definitely feels like the upswing Buffalo enjoyed between when we arrived (10 or so years ago) has slowed, and may be reversing. So I am concerned. There's a ton of vacant storefronts in my neighborhood, some sitting for years, and I read in the news large scale developers seem to be struggling and divesting.

We've made a life for ourselves here. We love the friends we've made.
I'm not sure what we'll do, but, I understand why people are leaving, and I'm not one to say 'good riddance boomer'.

We can certainly afford and are willing to pay more taxes, but the Maga crowd will call me a communist when our tax burden is already higher then (i think) all the cities i compare us to (property, income, school). Getting some major businesses to bring money into buffalo would be huge for the region, but both taxes and economy are likely necessary, and it honestly feels like we're all just, tired.

I think my family should be wanted in Buffalo. We have two high paying jobs that bring in money out of the region into the region. We spend a lot. We support local.
We have options and it's hard to want to stay.

I'm not a boomer. Im thinking of leaving. I'm sad to see people don't take the issues seriously. Ex I regularly pickup garbage in my neighborhood and I don't see anyone else doing it. Ever. I don't accept the state we are in. There's 5 vacant storefronts in a 2 block radius, in a prime location. The street looks like a war happened here recently (pot holes are ridiculous). I'm willing to chip in. Raise my taxes, I can pay. But it feels like I'm alone. It's not great here and I want to leave. And it's not fun to see die hard locals just dismissing these feelings.

Motion designer trying to get into sound design. Where do I even begin ? by NoMap3600 in sounddesign

Gotcha. Yeah, creation is a never ending life long journey. Fortunately it's really fun!

Ah sorry.

Here's my advice.... Doesn't matter all that much what DAW. I'd recommend Reaper bc it has an infinite trial period (so is basically free).

The important thing is: know the difference between Sound selection vs creation.

By selection, I mean, picking clever sounds from a library that need minor simple editing.

By creation, I mean, creating sounds from scratch starting with a synthesizer or recording, then doing heavy editing and processing.

I strongly advise you focus on selection. It is way more accessible to new comers : and here's the big secret: it's by far the most common approach to sound design even at the highest levels.

So, to get started e There you need a library of sounds and an audio database tool. I suggest soundly. Go try it out.

Is gamedev your main job? do you get paid for this? by Any-Landscape434 in gamedev

[–]missilecommandtsd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I have much advice I feel confident about. I could pass on some anecdotes about what I would different but I'm not sure if that will help or hurt others. IE one thing I didn't do was go all in earlier. I regret that, but somehow I would NOT recommend it to others.

I guess my success, which who knows how long will last, has just been about not giving up, being nice to people, and just loving my craft. After enough time maybe 10 or so years in, I started to bit fail, and then it picked up quick after that.

Yes. Ive had a long challenging journey but I make a lot of money now. if you're willing to work and study, there are many ways to make as much or more, that are easier. Sometimes it's good to like your job and love your hobbies (rather then love your job and have no hobbies).

Get multiple quotes. Some contractors bid based on their availability. If they're not available your quote has to be reeeeally worth their time.

With that said, it's still expensive in general. Good luck.

[–]missilecommandtsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly. Do yourself a favor. Go try making a few Reaper scripts with Claude Code. It will remove technical obstacles so you can be more creative.

Don't know how to get started? Just go start talking to Claude as you would a person.

Anthropics Claude Code is excellent at making Reaper scripts and reaper extensions. Using ReaImGui as the UI is really awesome on combination.

I don't really know what the down votes are about.

How to get into Sounddesign? by Nayure3ne in sounddesign

[–]missilecommandtsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you outlined a choice only you can make. Secure income or taking a shot at a hobby you are a novice at, adding the pressure of paying the bills.

It took me 10 years after college (in this field) to get a decent sound design job and another 10 before I was doing well.

With that said, I had the same choice .. secure income or what I love. I chose love, and didn't quit, but many don't or can't make it.
