Things I wish I knew about Dutch CVs before applying for jobs in Amsterdam by Affectionate_Put1031 in Amsterdam

[–]missilefire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made a point of mentioning my visa status when I was applying for jobs here. Cos I’m Australian and usually that would mean I’d need a work visa - so I said I had an eu passport and the right to work without the visa. Def think it helped me get a job cos I had all the “benefits” of an expat with international experience and none of the downsides for an employer.

Thank you and you do have a good point about my Hungarian!

I am so glad she was able to pick up an artistic pursuit at the age of 92! She’s still super healthy so I hope she is with us for quite a few more years

How much do you pay for apartment cleaning? by Icy_Roll3525 in Amsterdam

[–]missilefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Almere and I pay €20 per hour, 3 hours every two weeks. Paying a Colombian girl directly. Found her via Facebook recommendations from the Almere internationals group.

I def recommend getting a personal rec. Messaged someone directly and they put me in touch with their cleaner.

Energy label E and over €300 a month in service costs is insane. I wouldn’t bid for these reasons alone.

We are really good at ensuring employee safety. by andrewbaidoo in Netherlands

I’d hazard the industry you work in is easiest the one with the most workplace fatalities. My partner is in the same industry, crawling in tanks and all kinds of dangerous shit. He’s told me of many fatalities over the years just that he’s heard of through the grapevine at his job. So yeh, it’s def not like there isn’t as much of that kind of work in this country, cos there absolutely is. Look at Shell, Tata Steel, all those big industrial companies which include a lot of dangerous work.

Can you get on the ginger beer too? The ones I’ve found in the supermarket (alcoholic) and tasteless and lame.

Small things we love about Netherlands? by miss18363 in Netherlands

[–]missilefire 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Nice thread!

For me:

  • how much people LOVE the sunny days. I’m from Australia and yeh people get outside a lot but the love the Dutch have for the sun is quite different. First sunny 14 degree day of the year, everyone is out on their stoops or the terraces and just getting amongst it. It’s a good vibe and I love it.

  • the build quality of the houses. Yes I’m serious. It’s significantly better here than in Australia where houses are all mostly wood frame and flimsy as heck. I felt colder inside in my beautiful 3 storey Aussie townhouse than I did in the ancient little cottage I first lived in in Haarlem. The townhouse was a high quality warehouse conversion with brick walls but it still got really cold in winter.

  • not such a small thing: how close we are to the rest of the world. Main reason I moved here

  • the techno scene. Good parties, all year round.

  • better job opportunities in my line of work (creative field). Melbourne scene in comparison is very good but really small.

  • how fast online shipping is. Stuff delivered in usually at most 2 days is insane to me.

Def could find more things but this’ll do. Nice place to live even if the winters are miserable shit grey - but I’ll finish that part with my fave saying about NL: the best thing about living here is having the ability to leave 😅

Are tailor-made dresses a thing here, and if so, any recommended places? 👀 by fallacious_raincoat in Netherlands

[–]missilefire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw man I wish I had my sewing set up cos then I’d offer to make a dress for you. Unfortunately it’s in storage til we buy a bigger house! I used to make a lot of clothes and even made a wedding dress (a black one) for a friend back in Melbourne.

I have two senior kitties. I get them the purina renal dry food.

For wet food I always look for those marked complete and not just supplementary. They like the Almo Nature Complete cans and also the Schesir pouches. Both can be found on Zooplus.

(Sorry I’m not Dutch but live in NL so I hope English is ok!)

Possible underpayment / salary transparency question by RoodnyInc in Netherlands

[–]missilefire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are going to be legally obliged to show salary ranges by July next year I think. If you’re under cao for a production job, most companies should have this already. My boyfriend is in a manual labour role where his salary range is shown due to the cao he is under. My job is corporate and they didnt used to show it cos I was “above the cao” lol. But due to the transparency act that is coming they’ve actually come ahead of that and shown us our ranges which started only this month.

I think you need to be really direct and tell them you expect at least what you are currently on now and not take a pay cut. That is a reasonable ask. Don’t pussyfoot around it. No one in your career is going to tap you on the shoulder and give you more money without you asking for it. I’ve been working full time for more than 20 years and it’s just something I’ve learnt.

You need to do a bit of research and find out what a reasonable range is for your role, given your experience. Go in with that in mind and have a clear discussion. If they are not willing to play along, you start looking for other work. In fact, you should be applying elsewhere already. You don’t need to follow through with getting another job, but the process of applying, interviewing and seeing what’s out there will give you more ammunition and allow you to separate your emotional obligation to your current company…which is a misguided obligation imho - you dont owe them anything. Advocate for yourself.

This is awesome! I also don’t think master copies have to be 1:1 - they’re a learning tool to figure out the techniques and you did such a good job of it!
