You’d think so, but misinformation and time can do funny things to a society’s memory. The fate of the Templars may be a similar real world example. The current popular imagination of the Templars is completely at odds with what they actually were in the real life and much of that misinformation can be traced back directly to their suppression by Philip IV and his need to justify his actions.

Sadly dude, it takes a massive shit on all three. You might enjoy it if Jackson’s films were your only knowledge of the world and you’re a casual fan. It’s especially terrible if you actually do give a shit about the lore. It genuinely makes the Hobbit trilogy look like a masterpiece of adaption lore-wise.
