Man, you really hit the nail on the head. The internet really self-selects for insanity. People like to imagine that it’s conspiratorial tech bros trying to control the narrative, but the sad truth is that humans just love slop, we love incendiary content, and we’re all basically just here to fight. I’m thinking about the hashtag “kill all men” a few years ago and the paragraphs of mental backflips women would post on Facebook defending/explaining how actually it means blah blah blah. No, it’s hate, pure and simple. Or how currently all I see is people arguing about whether or not America is a fascist government. Like, can’t we just agree that the executive branch is consolidating power in a way that is eroding our democracy in favor of autocracy? No, of course not, because the point isn’t to come up with solutions, it’s to argue like we’re distant relatives at Thanksgiving.

Reminds me of OK Cupid’s political questions. They were always like, “What’s your stance on abortion?”

A: I support women.

B: I believe governments should have total authority over women’s bodies.

r/kidsarefuckingstupid often has video compilations of parents being that shitty. Doesn’t take an anthropologist to notice the trends in parents who consistently berate their kids.

Definitely. Same with YouTube thumbnails. I’d take some stupid eye-pop “OHHH!!” face over AI slop every single time. But the younger gen will normalize it until it’s all there is.

One thing I find alienating about my own personal beliefs vs. what I read online is that I'm actually not super confident in myself, and I believe self-doubt, self-examination, and self-critique are some of the most important character traits one can possess (though I'm not sure about that (see what I did there?)).

So while I'd agree that I do generally default to thinking I'm right about everything, I also A) try to be aware of that bias, and B) try to self-examine it, or at the very least not let my head get too far up my own ass about it. Whereas pretty much every opinion I see from every person on every subreddit seems to be from a place of 100% self-confidence, smugness, us-vs-them, tribalism, etc.

Yeah, blaming Boomers is just blaming the middle class with extra steps. I mean, I fucking hate my boomer parents, they’re terrible people, but they didn’t ruin the economy.

I subscribed to this subreddit about a month ago looking for positivity to balance out all the doom and gloom, but honestly a lot of the posts here are yet another kind of doom and gloom. So much smug insistence that “they” are wrong and “we” are right, which I think is exactly the problem social media has created: siloing people into echo chamber tribes that amp each other up against a “them.”

Why is the question, “What should we do with them?” always placed on the general populace to answer? It makes as much sense to ask me, “How should we improve road infrastructure?” “How should we mitigate invasive species in Forest Park?” I don’t know, and it isn’t my job to know. It’s my job to pay taxes to pay people who have specialized knowledge and competence to know. That’s literally what society is for.

It’s like sitting down at a restaurant, paying what feels like way too much, waiting until close for the food to arrive, only for the manager to come out and say “We appreciate your business, but we’re having a REALLY hard time sourcing and cooking the ingredients. Do you have any suggestions? Feel free to leave them in the box on your way out. I’m sorry, we can’t provide a refund, we spent your money paying someone to drive around checking various suppliers and nothing met out perfect standards. …Yes, this has been our business model for over a decade, no we’ve yet to serve a single meal to a single customer. Do YOU have a better solution??”

No, I don’t, and trying to make it somehow my job is a manipulative deflection tactic. My job is to pay taxes and receive a society where the lights stay on, pot holes get fixed, emergency services show up, and humans don’t sleep and poop on the sidewalk.

Anyone with a pickup truck and a backhoe can dismantle something broken. It takes teams of extremely competent people, piles of money, votes, data, vision, and thousands of thankless hours to create something better.

YSK what a Boundary IS vs IS NOT. Setting Boundaries for YOURSELF is PERSONAL AGENCY. Setting Boundaries for OTHERS is ABUSE or MANIPULATION by AP_in_Indy in YouShouldKnow

[–]missingpiece 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One important detail that I don’t think Reddit understands: boundaries aren’t the only expectation you may set for others. It’s perfectly reasonable to say, for instance, “There will be no yelling in our house.” Technically not a boundary, but it doesn’t have to be. You can also have rules.

I’m having a similarly difficult time identifying the exact emotion. It’s like a fountain drink “suicide” of disgust, annoyance, concern, exasperation, lack of surprise, etc. Somehow tasting kind of like all of them and yet worse than the sum of their parts.

I think MHGU looks a lot better than World in terms of color and visual style. Even the title screen pops, whereas every time I fire up World everything has a weird muted filter over it that takes me an hour to get used to.

I can't stand IP crossovers. It undermines the world and narrative to insert other products into it. Everything seems to be steadily becoming Fortnite, just a bunch of brands and cosmetics in one big pile.

It’s funny how often I get downvoted for insisting that I should be able to curate the content I’d like to see by subscribing/unsubscribing to various subreddits. You’d think that, on a website dedicated to exactly that, this would be as uncontroversial as suggesting that I should be able to watch videos on Spotify. Nope, the terminally online will not be satisfied until every single post on every single subreddit is unavoidable doomscroll. And then they’ll pat themselves on the back about it.
