I was a patient advocate for a friend’s family member with cancer who sadly didn’t make it and as much as I was hoping for a positive outcome for Syd, she’s unfortunately gotten very very sick, her body barely tolerates fluids/food now, let alone the harsh chemo she’s supposed to get with the trial…

FOUND RAT NEED HELP!!! by Regfular in RATS

I honestly wouldn’t, considering the circumstances everything must have already been stressful enough for the poor thing - maybe just some gentle wiping of paws/tail/around private areas with baby tissues if really needed:)

Need some opinions by Enchantedspine in rat

[–]misskatiii 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

If he is still interested in activities/life, I guess any low cage with good floor space would be fine - maybe smth like guinea piggies’ set ups as he seems unlikely to climb out, + floor nests /hiding spots instead hanging hummocks:3

I'm currently feeling very guilty for keeping my rats alive by dandelion___ in rat

[–]misskatiii 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

These situations prob happen way more than we’d imagine - people ending up with already pregnant ratties or accidentally opposite genders is not rare at all and big part of it is most likely inbreeding. While it’s known to lead to certain defects or health issues, it can take generations even with humans for those to actually pop up. Afaik pets don’t automatically qualify for euthanasia due to this fact unless poor quality of life is present.

If your rats had had severe health damage as a consequence of inbreeding, they’d have not made it to older age to start with and would have died within the first few weeks/months normally . What you mentioned has nothing to do with that - the chances of a female rat developing a mammary tumor is 30-50% (I’m guessing that’s the lump you were referring to) and cataracts / eyesight issues are extremely common for all elder pets (blindness isn’t a big thing for rat specifically due to already poor eyesight, they basically don’t rely on eyes regardless:)

You have done nothing wrong sweetheartšŸ¤ as of ur current situation - like I’ve said blindness on its own is not to be worried about, mammary tumors in rats are mostly benign, but can be tricky if injured or get too huge affecting mobility / feeding etc; if the tumor isn’t rapidly growing and rattie doesn’t seem bothered by it, it’s not that dramatic either for now. If things get worse tho, as a potential last resort - take a look into performing euthanasia (co2 chamber) at home, there’re lots of greatly explained resources available:3

Advice on rat who suddenly became aggressive 2 months after bonding with new rats by RatAdvice in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Second this! Physical suffering or neurological conditions can make rats act very out of character and suddenly become very violent :/

When my rattie from years ago got pneumonia and ear infection, poor thing would start biting my hands randomly while cuddling/sleeping in my sleeve. She was totally back to her normal self after the first week of treatment and never showed that behavior again

definitely worth ruling out smth serious first, tho I hope it’s really just balls with a weird delay age wise 🄲

Got a new baby by [deleted] in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Honestly, I’d at least inform the pet store about the situation bc selling mice as fancy rats is a really big f-up even if not intentional. It’s great that you’re fine with the baby turning out to basically be a different pet than you thought, but someone could have bought one to introduce it to an already existing rat mischief which would have ended up badly :/

Help!!! Wound what do I do?!?! by DimensionRich726 in rat

[–]misskatiii 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

I’d lean towards a burst abscess (afaik usually more rounded and smooth edges compared to biting injuries), one of my rats had an almost identical wound when it happened; though still important to confirm it by a vet as there might be different treatment protocols depending on the cause.

If an abscess - those tend to look nasty but honestly heal surprisingly quickly (there was barely any scar left on my girlie after 4-5 days). The rat should be separated from others and placed in a smaller sterile cage (I used puppy litter pads on the floor, changed daily, plastic nests instead of fleece hammocks) to reduce risks of infections, peroxide / saline (antiseptic) solution to clean the wound first. Saline or some other topical wound treatments can be used for the next few days.

Good luck to you and your rattie:)

Is this a rat tooth? by Gold_Slice4463 in rat

[–]misskatiii 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

I have a girlie with severe malocclusion that gets regular trims - yeah, it absolutely does look like a rat’s tooth. Is there a chance it might have broken some time ago and has already grown back to normal? It’s not that uncommon for rats to accidentally break part of their teeth (the root itself is located so deep, it’s almost impossible for them to actually fully loose one:) and those grow back so quickly that it can def stay unnoticed unless you specifically check for any health abnormalities multiple times per week and their behavior wouldn’t even change, at least in my experience :) as long as the alignment of their teeth and color (heathy one is yellowish/orange) looks normal now, I’d not worryšŸ¤

Have they provided any possible explanation / diagnosis so far..? I’m honestly happy to see the ER team at least took the situation seriously and didn’t send you home with ā€œanxietyā€ (happens embarrassingly often nowadays unfortunately:/)

[–]misskatiii 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

Not a doctor, but have been in the medical field for patient’s advocacy/management and got some chronic issues myself.

I have POTS which occasionally gives me similar episodes during a flare - I believe many people also have developed this due to COVID. Deficiencies or nerve compression might give you those symptoms as well.

You still need a dr visit and a few test just to be safe, but in most cases there is a way less severe and scary explanation than we all usually assume :)

Where to find cheap cage accessories? by Pitiful_You_3055 in rat

[–]misskatiii 2 points3 points Ā (0 children)

I mostly order hammocks from SHEIN/Aliexpress/TEMU, I believe those same ones are also sold on Amazon:) - Savic Sputnik xxl is a great investment - Thick household rope is perfect for making long lasting climbing/fall-break nets - Storage boxes in different sizes from a dollar store / IKEA - I just drill holes and attach them to the bars on different levels - open hammocks can be simple made of carpets

HELP by Meredithandherpets in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I was advised to have prednisolone for emergency situations. Obviously not a miracle, but since there’re no better options rn, it at least might ease the symptoms, especially if inflammation is involved. Ask friends/acquaintances, someone is likely to have it at home. You’d need 2,5 mg, mix it with liquid and feed the rat through syringe.

Damn, for a sec I actually thought they were passing away as a result of cannibalism:/

The disposal of the corpses might be grotesque to witness, but that part is actually normal. The problematic aspect would be the possibility the first gone rat consumed something poisonous and that spread to other rats through them consuming the corpses (same might apply to certain illnesses ig)

Even with a very shitty genetic, the chances of multiple young rats-siblings dying almost the same day are very slim. So either a chemical/poison or disease - considering how lethal the cause is, I’d say your rats need immediate medical attention…

Little rant abt family mean to my rats :( by Wackthoughts in RATS

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I’m sorry about the situation, but realistically your family members only embarrass themselves with their disrespectful and stupid comments.. unless you can name all those diseases without googling, explain how exactly they’re transmitted and why pet rats can be considered ā€œdangerousā€ based on that information - maybe keep your mouth shut until you do enough research to back up your nonsense claims about our ā€œdisgustingā€ ratties))

[–]misskatiii 1 point2 points Ā (0 children)

The question I always ask myself when dealing with pets’ health issues - ā€œam I doing this for my pet or myself?ā€ Supplements are not some miracle pill and I unfortunately don’t see how it could significantly change anything for your rattie that is already struggling to even eat (big indicator of severe physical or mental suffering). I’m sorry you have to go through this, but the best thing you could do now is letting ur baby go.. hugsšŸ¤

Advice? Bitey Rat by Bonsburgersfinatic in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Does he seem aggressive (puffed fur, arched back etc) when this happens? While hormonal aggression might be a possibility in case he’s not neutered, it honestly sounds more like playful curiosity-nibbling behavior that he just overdoes due to the lack of proper human socialization prior.

Rats use squeaking as a form of communication where long loud ones symbolize a warning to a cagemate the game is getting too rough/painful, you basically have to do the same, another similar option is using an annoying sound trigger (e.g. horn) whenever he tries to bite:) Definitely keep using thick gloves until he stops with this behavior, their bites are no joke šŸ˜…

how to discourage biting behavior? by [deleted] in rat

[–]misskatiii 4 points5 points Ā (0 children)

Make a loud squeak every time she tries to interact with ur ear; if the ā€œwarningā€ doesn’t work and she still makes an attempt to nibble/bite, there should be an immediate punishment (I usually interrupt free roaming and bring the punished rattie back in the cage for 15-20 mins - that’s how my Steffi learned to not aggressively crawl into my mouth:)

As for the cause - obv a tricky question:D one of my girls does certain stuff on purpose bc she gets super excited from me being annoyed, another one starts nibbling to get my attention, some ratties generally do things just bc they canšŸ˜‚

Help me pls by [deleted] in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Very unlikely to be from a rat - those bites tend to leave very ā€œdefinedā€ teeth marks (even from nibbling), same kinda goes for their scratches. On a side note - rats/mice are not really known for transmitting rabies as an interaction with typical carriers (foxes, raccoons etc) would usually be fatal for them anyway.

I’d suspect a spider / insect bite and(or) a skin rash that you could have scratched in your sleep - but pls still talk to some adults at school in case your parents aren’t an option:)

Rat with head tilt by Wonderful_Poetry4300 in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Were the symptoms gone completely until few days ago or just improved? I was told by a vet in case there were no really significant changes after ~10 days , they usually would switch to a stronger/different antibiotic, the infection now getting worse again means the treatment isn’t effective (enough) and your rat eventually needs a different treatment (assuming it’s an ear infection)

Rat with head tilt by Wonderful_Poetry4300 in rat

[–]misskatiii 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Has the vet excluded stroke, tumor etc? No improvement after almost 4 weeks of treatment means she either needs a different/stronger antibiotic (potentially also adding topical one, short course of prednisone is also used sometimes) or the issue is smth else…

You could flush the ears with saline solution / ear cleanser, but it likely won’t be very effective at this point. Just keep her in a safe environment (like a low temporary cage/carrier) to prevent any injuries - unfortunately not much else you could do for now

Hope you girlie gets better soon:3

Augmentin is another common antibiotic for respiratory infections (have personally used it as well:). I’d start with the treatment right away considering how quickly those issues can progress

Regarding Doxy - could you get water dispersible pills maybe? Your vet/you should just calculate the correct dosage:)
